Available transmission capability (ATC) is the transfer capability remaining in physical transmission network for further commercial activity above existing transmission commitments. ATC is an important reference for market participators to make decisions, as well as a judgment for system operators to alleviate transmission congestion, and a reference for system planning and expansion. Most of the existing ATC calculation methods are mainly based on deterministic techniques. In practical power systems, there are large amount of uncertainties, and power system is dynamic and time-varying. A novel approach is proposed to analyze relevant features of ATC and calculate ATC based on sequential Monte Carlo simulation and linear programming considering uncertainties and time variation of the system. Through long-time simulation and analysis, the distribution features of ATC can be obtained. The algorithm based on MATLAB 6.5 is developed. IEEE 14-bus test system is used to verify the presented approach.

VSC-HVDC technology based on voltage source converter (VSC) and isolated gate bipolar transistor is a kind of novel HVDC technology for low power and long distance with flexible control and operation modes. In this paper, the dynamic mathematic model of VSC-HVDC with SPWM control is founded based on analyzing the fundamental principle of VSC-HVDC system. Its switch characteristic and dynamic operation mechanism are analyzed. Simulation results of dynamic operation characteristics for VSC-HVDC system with a rapid power change or a short time fault show that the theoretical analysis is correct. This is a basement to do more dynamic analysis for VSC-HVDC

A Super Capacitor Energy Storage (SCES) system applied to distributed generation system and distribution network is presented. Application studies of the SCES system for active power supply, voltage control and harmonic elimination are described. With inverter control, both active and reactive power pumped into the utility grid can be controlled. The proposed approach combines a dual-loop voltage and current control and a power control which does not require knowledge of the equivalent impedance of the utility grid the SCES unit is connected to. Furthermore, the proposed power control has superiorities as strong P and Q regulation capability, fast enough response, and purely sinusoidal line current. Finally, experiments are performed to verify the proposed theory which shows its well performances.

Dielectric barrier discharges in air are generally streamer-like discharges, however, a homogeneous discharge, called atmospheric pressure glow discharge, may be obtained in some noble gases such as helium and argon. Dielectric barrier discharges in nitrogen and argon are studied experimentally to determine mechanisms controlling the transition from glow to streamer discharge. The influences of the applied voltage, the gas gap distance, the gas pressure and other factors on the discharge are investigated. The characteristics of the dielectric barrier discharge in nitrogen and argon are analyzed and compared. The aim of the paper is to study the experimental conditions of obtaining an atmospheric pressure glow discharge in nitrogen and argon. The possibility of obtaining an atmospheric pressure glow discharge in air is examined by increasing the proportion of air in nitrogen gradually. The waveforms of the applied voltage and discharge current under different experimental conditions are reported, which is helpful to describe the characteristics of the discharge and judge whether the discharge is a glow discharge or not

In this paper, the influence of mobile signal in UHF PD monitoring is discussed in types of substation in China. To find the solving, the GSM mobile signal's spectrum are measured and analyzed both in laboratory and onsite. The results show that the mobile signal's spectrum is broad when the phone signal is emitted. It is hard to avoid this interfere only by using narrow measuring band. At the same time, the GSM mobile signal's transmission characteristic in GIS was simulated in our model under laboratory conditions. In brief, our findings are discussed through two projects. The results show our finding is available and effective

Protective relays, pivotal devices that can quickly identify and isolate fault area in power systems, is of great importance for power network security and reliability. When relays trip a faulted line in the network, the flow on the faulted line will be transferred to the other lines. Those lines might be overloaded and then cascading tripped by the backup relays, which worsen the system state and even cause blackout. Studies on several well-known blackouts reveal that protective relays are involved and the most troublesome ones are backup protective relays. In this paper the defects of the existing backup protections are investigated in detail first. Then a new wide area backup protection scheme based on WAMS to identify flow transferring is presented. A new concept of flow transferring relativity factor (FTRF) is proposed to estimate the flow distribution after flow transferring occurs; and the method of calculating FTRF matrix on-line is also stated. The simulation of a three machines network shows that the wide-area backup protection scheme to identify flow transferring works well

The issue of pricing the services provided by power system stabilizers (PSS) to damp out low-frequency oscillations in large interconnected electrical power grids is proposed. Taking the dominant eigenvalue method for analytical tool to evaluate the increased transfer capability when PSS-control services are utilized, a method based on nucleolus in the cooperative game theory to determine the individual PSS services provider's contribution to power systems stable operation, and allocate the profit obtained by total transaction level increment among all PSS services providers is presented. The calculation results show that the proposed method can achieve rational allocation, and have incentive effect on popularizing PSS application. These are helpful for the stable and economical operation of electricity markets.

Against the stability of the multi-infeed HVDC (MIDC) transmission system, voltage source converter based HVDC (VSC-HVDC) is applied to MIDC systems. The new systems can reduce probability of commutation failure and improve the stability of the MIDC systems. A physical model of a multi-infeed HVDC and VSC-HVDC system is developed, and its mathematical model is analyzed. The rectangular coordinate form of VSC's power transmission equations is deduced through coordinate conversion. Based on the inverse system method for multivariable nonlinear control, the nonlinear controllers of the multi-infeed HVDC and VSC-HVDC system are designed. Simulation results by PSCAD/EMTDC show that the designed nonlinear controllers improve effectively the voltage stability of the multi-infeed HVDC and VSC-HVDC system under small or large disturbances, such as short circuit fault, reduce the probability of commutation failure in the inverter of HVDC systems and increase the operation reliability of HVDC systems

With the development of power grid interconnection, it is necessary for operators to know about system dynamic status while disturbance occurs in power systems in order to take appropriate counter measures to ensure the power system security. The advent of wide area measurement system (WAMS) makes the monitoring of power system dynamic behavior become possible. Based on WAMS, a method for identifying different kinds of disturbance in power system is presented in this paper. Firstly, the features of disturbances (i.e. short circuit, load shedding and loss of generation) that frequently occur in power system are analyzed in detail. Then, based on the idea of pattern recognition, the suggested disturbance identification method is discussed. Finally, computer simulation results are carried out in North China power grid, which demonstrate the validity of theoretical analysis and the feasibility of the proposed disturbances identification method

In this paper, a hierarchical control scheme for improving transient stability of power systems by thyristor controlled braking resistor is proposed. Based on three-level co- state prediction method of large-scale system principle, the control structure is organized into a two-layer controller. The lower layer is composed of decentralized local feedback controllers, each of which takes local feedback signal and controls its connected generator. In the upper layer a global controller is designed to enhance the effectiveness of decentralized local controllers. The global controller coordinates local controllers by generating remote feedback signals which ensuring the global optimal solution of the overall system transient performance. The proposed control scheme can guarantee fast and accurate control actions of local controllers when a power system is subjected to large disturbances. Simulation results show the effectiveness of the proposed control scheme.
