The magnetic storm results in the transmission lines with geomagnetically induced current (GIC). And GIC happening in random has the frequency between 0.001Hz - 0.1Hz, and continues from several minutes to several hours. Based on elaborating mechanism and characteristic of GIC in grids and the influence on china power grids, the article has conducted the research work of GIC monitoring technology, and has investigated the method of sampling data of GIC, the survey algorithm and the new monitoring device. The simulated test shows, the monitoring device can effectively measure GIC which is signal of quasi direct current and randomness, has advantages of having few data to be handled and needing little memory space, etc. © 2005 IEEE.

In this paper, a novel HVDC transmission system is presented which is with parallel large capacitor connected in the DC side of the rectifier (shorted form HVDC-C). The fundamental principle and technology characteristics of HVDC-C are analyzed. The study shows that HVDC-C reduces the component of harmonic voltage and harmonic current both side in AC system and DC transmission line, makes control strategy more flexible and the filter structure more simple, etc. Furthermore, the control method, contrast to conventional HVDC and application foreground of HVDC-C is discussed briefly. The simulations based on PSCAD/EMTDC show that HVDC-C can operate steadily, has the capability to restore steadily when short circuit fault occurs, and is feasible technically and obvious in advantages. © 2005 IEEE.

Based on the characteristics of TCSC, the influence of TCSC on fault component distance protection is analyzed. With the new setting resistance to be ZZd-jXc, the action of fault component distance protection on the line equipped with TCSC is presented. It is concluded that the fault component distance protection will not act incorrectly, but the range of protection will be reduced, especially when the TCSC is bypassed. © 2005 IEEE.

With increasing attention to sustainable development and environmental protection, more and more countries turn to wind energy to reduce their dependence on traditional fossil fuel energy. Among the new challenges with this trend is how to integrate wind farm with existing ac network more effectively. The paper presents a possible measure based on VSC-HVDC, namely so-called wind farm incorporated VSC-HVDC (WVSC-HVDC). In the paper the wind farm along with an ac grid supplies to a passive network. The paper firstly introduces VSC-HVDC, and then presents a space vector based control strategy for supplying to a passive network. The rectifier controls dc voltage and reactive power that is needed by the wind farm. The inverter controls the ac bus voltage in the passive network. Simulations using PSCAD/EMTDC are performed to study the steady and transient behaviors of WVSC-HVDC. With harmonics analysis, the simulation results will be helpful for further understanding of the operation characteristics of WVSC-HVDC and its protection design. © 2005 IEEE.

Through the analysis on voltage source converter (VSC) equations in dq0 coordinate system, the state space equation of the generalized plant is gained. By use of H∞ theory, constant DC voltage H∞ controller and constant AC voltage controller are designed. On the basis of establishing MATLAB simulation model for transmitting power to passive network via VSC-HVDC system, the simulation of control modes, such as constant DC voltage control, constant AC voltage control and constant reactive power control, is conducted. Simulation results show that the proposed controller can meet the need of supplying power to passive network and the control modes are effective. © 2005 IEEE.

Detecting single-phase-to-ground fault is a difficult and challenging problem in the non-solidly grounded system that includes neutral point ungrounded, neutral point high-resistance grounded and neutral point compensated extinction coil grounded system. It is important to identify the faulted line quickly and exactly to reduce the time and effort necessary to locate and remove the fault, so that the probability of a second ground fault with its destructive currents can be reduced significantly. Based on analyzing the characteristics of the existing methods about identifying the faulted line in the non-solidly grounded system, the characteristics of the lines' zero-sequence current and the system's zero-sequence voltage and the relationship between every line's zero-sequence current and the system's zero-sequence voltage are analyzed deeply and a new method using similitude power to determine the faulted line is presented. The method can be applied to neutral point ungrounded system and neutral point ineffective grounded system to determine the faulted line accurately when resistance ground faults occur. Various ground faults under different conditions are simulated using MATLAB. The results show the method is feasible and effective. © 2005 IEEE.

This paper presents a Multi-Agent and WAN Based Adaptive Coordinated protection system (MAWBACPS). The system utilizes IP Intranet to realize real-time wide area information exchange of a power system. Multi-agent system's several good qualities to solve distributing problems are used to realize the coordination of the operation settings of protective relays. A new idea of effortful adaptation for power system protection is proposed, and a new method to determine adaptive coordinated relay settings of lines are proposed in this paper. Moreover, the structure, communication mechanism and coordination control strategy of MAWBACPS, and relating agents' design are presented. Experiment results illustrate that MAWBACPS can realize the coordination of protections, enable the back-up relays to use their adaptive settings in most situations, and efficiently improve the security of power system. © 2005 IEEE.

Along with the increment of disturbing loads in the power system, the effect on network that is brought by the power quality problems, become increasingly serious. Based on the market bargaining principles, the power price should be affected by the disturbance of loads. However current power price system fails to reflect the factor. Evaluation of load's disturbing property and analysis of its influence to power price is performed in this paper. The load current can be decomposed into three parts: instantaneous active current, instantaneous fundamental reactive current and instantaneous distorted current by the generalized instantaneous reactive power theory in dq0 coordinate system. The reactive current emission factor reflecting pure resistance of load and distorted current emission factor reflecting load's linearity are defined. According to these two factors, the evaluation method of the effect of the disturbing load on the power price based on allocating compensation equipment's cost is presented. The method provides some basis for contract's subscribing in the future. The calculated example shows the feasibility of above method, as well the degree of the influence of the disturbing load upon the power price. © 2005 IEEE.

Restoration of a power system after a complete blackout is a very important issue to the safety of the power system. Reasonable black start schemes arc necessary to restore the power system as soon as possible. Based on data envelopment analysis, a new strategy for assessing black start schemes is proposed in this paper. Schemes' technical verification is taken into consideration in the process of the assessment Whether a scheme is effective is defined by employing its input and output indexes' values entirely. The application to a practical power system verifies that the method could provide dispatchers more comprehensive and objective decision references. © 2005 IEEE.

In electricity market, it is widely accepted that short-term load forecast is a key problem of market operation. In this paper, a novel model for load forecasting based on Intelligence Information Processing is presented. Here, we make full use of the excellent property reconstruction ability of independent component analysis, which is a new intelligence information processing technology for separating signals and making them independent mutually, and presents STLF model based independent property reconstruction. The load properties of different kinds are restructured to enhance its representation ability and simplifying STLF modeling by ANN. After neural network is trained by new properties with lower dimension, STLF model is built. Finally, the real load data of spot market in New England is applied to demonstrate the validity of the proposed approach.
