Modular multilevel converter (MMC) is a new multilevel converter suitable for VSC-HVDC. The principle of the submodules and converter topology are introduced in this paper. A novel carried phase shifted sinusoidal pulse width modulation (CPS-SPWM) scheme suitable for MMC in VSC-HVDC is presented. Voltage balancing among the submodules is a crucial problem of MMC. Based on the energy equipartition and voltage balance,a capacitor voltage-balancing strategy is presented in this paper with the topology of MMC and modulation. This scheme could effectively ensure each submodule at the same capacitor voltage level. The correctness and effectiveness of the schemes were verified by the simulation.

The traditional solutions for LFO are the powersystem stabilizer (PSS) with local or global signal implemented on the excitations. This paper explores the global governor-side damping controllers for LFO, i.e., controller with input from the wide area measurement system (WAMS). Design strategy of global governor-side damping controller with remote signal from WAMS is proposed, based on the partial state feedback theory. Simulation results in a 4-generator-2-area powersystem show the effectiveness of the proposed global governor-side damping controller.

In this paper, a set of five-order dynamic equations of induction motor in d-q coordinates of synchronous generator, which can be interfaced with network equations and generator equations, is derived, meanwhile the five-order linearized equations of induction motor as well as the equations of load models containing constant impedance, constant current and constant power are derived too. Utilizing the IEEE first benchmark model, the linearized models containing above-mentioned loads for analysis on subsynchronous resonance (SSR) is established. The influences of above-mentioned static load models and synthetic load model consisting of induction motor and constant impedance on damping characteristics of torsional modes are analyzed. Analysis results show that above-mentioned different load models leads to instability of different damping characteristics of torsional modes, and the analysis results may be over optimistic without regards to load models, and it is impossible to ensure the analysis results always conservative by means of a kind of load model.
