In order to overcome the disadvantage that there are hardly any analysis functions on alarm messages in current EMS, an Intelligent Expert system which processes all alarm messages from the regional Grid Dispatching Center is designed and developed in this paper. When there is only one SCADA data source, the system receives and identifies real-time alarm messages from dispatching center, finds out and deletes the false alarm messages and then estimates the current state of power grid. If there is no fault but some abnormal warning information is generated by electrical equipments, the system analyses the abnormal warning information and suggests corresponding measures that dispatcher should take. If some fault has occurred, the system classifies the alarm messages and provides the necessary information for fault diagnosis after further processing. After the system is completed, it will improve the quality of surveillance and provide richer and more intelligent auxiliary decision support. ©2010 IEEE.

In modern power system, power systems are being interconnected into a unified system. The structure of the power grid is more and more complex, and the relation between different regional power grids is more closed. In order to achieve a joint power grid scheduling, incident handling and fault simulation, objectively, the control centers are required to use distributed algorithm. But the distributed Energy Management system (EMS) and Dispatcher Training Simulator (DTS) used now are not mature and the frequency changes are not considered in the distributed algorithms. This makes impossible to obtain an accurate simulation of the actual power system operation status in the distributed EMS/DTS. Because the dynamic flow algorithm can reflect the actual system more exactly, a new method called distributed dynamic power flow based on asynchronous iteration mode considering frequency change is proposed in this paper. The whole idea of the algorithm is given. The generator unit in dynamic power flow, considering frequency changes, can be modeled in coordinate layer and used to calculate frequency changes and the power sent to the network. The network modeled in coordinate layer and subsystems, is used to calculate power flow and unbalance power of the interconnected system. By a dozen times iterative solution between generator unit and network unit, the unbalanced power are distributed in generator and load nodes finally. In this article, we take the IEEE 9 node system as an example to authenticate this method. The simulation results are the same as the real ones hence showing that the new algorithm is real and effective. ©2010 IEEE.

The method, complex torque coefficient approach, which is used to analyze the sub synchronous oscillation (SSO) problems with the help of PSCAD/EMTDC are recommended. While how to achieve the complex torque coefficient approach by time-domain simulation method effectively has not been specified. With the simulation study of different systems like HVDC system, AC system with series compensation device, etc, amplitude, injection time and additivity of injected oscillating torques are discussed. A set of conclusion to the method is drawn for reference. © 2010 IEEE.

Simulation accuracy has great effects on power system analysis and control. In this paper, in order to analyze the power system real-time digital simulation error, prony algorithm is used to extract the features of signal. Based on the analysis results of this algorithm, residual similar index was used to characterize the global error of simulation, and then frequency, damping and amplitude similar indexes were employed to represent features error of transient signals respectively. A calculation program for power system real-time digital simulation accuracy evaluation was employed to analyze the measured waveforms and results of fault simulations on RTDS. Simulation results have proved the validity of the proposed analysis method of power system real time digital simulation error. © 2010 IEEE.

As a promising renewable resource, wind power is highly expected to contribute a significant part of generation in power systems in the future, but this also brings new integration related power quality issues due to its unconventional characteristics. To solve frequency fluctuating problems of wind power integration, this paper proposes an idea that it is possible and reasonable to use HVDC lines with auxiliary frequency control(AFC) to stabilize the frequency fluctuation caused by wind power, which could increase the rate of wind power integration not only, but also reduce intra-region reserve capacity and wind power cost. Furthermore, an improved frequency control strategy of HVDC is proposed. The simulation results show that the substitution of wind power frequency control reserves with the HVDC connection is possible without additional equipment and without causing large disturbances in both sides. © 2010 IEEE.

In this paper, power system electromagnetic and electromechanical transient hybrid real-time simulation technology is expounded in details, which has advantages of the electromagnetic transient simulation program and electromechanical one. The more details needed to analyze the dynamic characteristics of power systems are provided by this hybrid simulation technology, and the scale of power system simulated is not limited in the hybrid simulation program. The hybrid simulation program is applied to analyze the power system subsynchronous oscillation problem occurred in a power plant with 4 turbine generators located in the northwestern China. According to the simulation results, it is clear that the stability of generators is threatened by the subsynchronous oscillations caused by capacitor series compensation in the transmission line connecting the power plant and the load center system. In meantime, the effectiveness of the countermeasure is validated simultaneously by the hybrid simulation results. ©2010 IEEE.

This paper presents a simple and effective approach based on two dynamic matrixes of node-relay matrix (NRM) and relay-incidence matrix (RIM) to determine minimum break point set (MBPS) for coordination of the directional relays. Firstly, the NRM and RIM are defined and their calculation methods are developed. Then, some optimization operations for network reduction and special structure are presented to update the NRM and RIM and the detailed flowchart is provided. At last, case studies on various topologies demonstrate the effectiveness and simplicity of the proposed method. © 2010 IEEE.

To avoid undesired operation of backup protection caused by load encroachment under cascading failures, the methodology for vulnerability assessment of backup protection is studied. In this paper, the vulnerability assessment of backup protections is formulated as a mixed integer nonlinear programming problem, which is solved by the binary particle swarm optimization approach. The measurement index for assessing the vulnerability of backup protection is given as well. The simulation results on New England 39-bus system demonstrate that the proposed method can effectively assess the vulnerability of backup protection under cascading failures. © 2010 IEEE.

With the increasing expansion of AC/DC transmission system scale, the research on Available Transfer Capability (ATC) for AC/DC transmission systems has important academic and practical significances to AC/DC transmission system planning, operation and reliability evaluation. Most of the existing ATC calculation methods are mainly based on deterministic techniques and suitable for AC transmission system. In practical power systems, there are large amount of uncertainties which can effect the operation of AC/DC transmission system, and power system is dynamic and time-varying. A novel approach is proposed to analyze relevant features of ATC and calculate ATC based on sequential Monte Carlo-Frequency and Duration (FD) considering uncertainties and time variation of AC/DC transmission systems. The algorithm MATLAB6.5 is developed. Modified IEEE-14 node test system is used to verity the presented approach. ©2010 IEEE.

With the widely installation of Phasor Measurement Units (PMUs) in power system and the increasing requirement of the real-time monitoring and control, a novel power system topology analysis algorithm is proposed with high precise information from PMUs to improve the performance of current network topology analysis. First of all, a method of identifying switch status is established to correct the state mistake of circuit breakers (CB) relying on the analog data acquired by PMUs. Subsequently, a topology analysis in substation combined with the PMUs information (including the digital data of CBs state and the phasor of voltage and current) is advanced in this paper. And then an efficient topology analysis algorithm introduces into topology search process using Cotree-to-Bus structure array. Finally, simulation results based on the PSCAD and MATLAB software have validated the efficiency and accuracy of the novel method introduced in this paper. © 2010 IEEE.
