Imitating human's ability of visual and analysis models, a computer vision-based measuring-instrument calibration method is proposed in this paper. Capturing meter images from real-time video with every analog output, via Radial basis function neural network (RBFNN) to classify the dial plate elements, and meter reading can be obtained from complex needle movement. The particle feature extraction, RBFNN simple architecture and fast training process can satisfy the real-time meter reading perfectly in the needle identifier and reading recognition. The least squares fit method based on maximum likelihood estimate is efficient in needle parameter derivation, and the computer vision-based meter calibration method has high performance and accuracy. © 2005 IEEE.

Synchronous generator excitation control system is one of the most important parts of power system control. And as PID control is one of the first developed and the most widely used control schemes in excitation system, its parameters tuning problem has been highly concerned. Since MATLAB genetic algorithm toolbox has the characteristics of strong robustness and efficient optimization, this paper first establishes a mathematical model of generator excitation system, and then uses ITSE index of terminal voltage step response curve as the optimization index, computes the fitness function based on SIMULINK platform, and uses MATLAB genetic algorithm toolbox to optimize PID parameters of synchronous generator excitation control system. Applying this method to a power plant's synchronous generator excitation system, results demonstrate that dynamic characteristics are improved greatly. © 2010 IEEE.

The location and sizing of distribution substations integrated with urban spatial information is a optimization problem which primary characteristics are the existence of many suboptimal cost peaks and the solution space is on a discrete floating-point variables rage with some unfeasible area constraints. To solve this problem, a spatial information based parameter selfadaptive schema of DE (ISADE) is proposed The populations are formulated by spatial coordinates of candidate substation locations which chosen randomly and attempt to cover the entire planning area. A randomized self-adaptive scheme for DE mutation weighting factor F is used to increase the ability of searching out the global solution. The effectiveness of the proposed method is then tested on two practical substation planning areas of Beijing Electric power Corporation and the results are compared with PSO and standard DE. © 2008 IEEE.

A practical ride through scheme bases on super capacitor energy storage system for ASD (Adjustable Speed Drive) equipment is presented in this paper. The topology of ASD discussed adopts AC-DC-AC structure and 12 pulses diode rectifier as input interface. Super capacitor (SC) module connects to inverter DC bus to support DC voltage while power quality problems such as voltage sag or short-term outage take place in power source. A SC energy storage system based 15kVA ASD prototype was developed. Digital simulation and physical experiments were carried out to verify the correctness and validity of proposed ASD ride through topology and control strategies.

An equivalent continuous-time state-space model for VSC-HVDC in the synchronous dq reference frame has been established in the paper. Based on the model, relevant control strategies have been developed for the cases of supplying active and passive systems. The Multi-Input Multi-Output (MIMO) control schemes are emphasized in designing power controller and voltage controller. The scheme features feed forward compensation to decouple the d- and q-axis of the Voltage Source Converter (VSC) model, which ensures the independent control of active and reactive power, DC voltage and reactive power as well. Simulations have been performed on PSCAD/EMTDC, a visual design environment for power system studies. The validity of the mathematic model and the feasibility of the control strategies have been proved by the simulation results. © 2006 IEEE.

This paper presents a novel scheme based on grille fractal for distinguishing between inrush currents and internal fault currents in transformers, which is derived from the singularity detection in the waveforms. First, differential currents are analyzed on the basis of grille fractal (GF). Noises are then filtered by use of the adaptive generalized morphological filter (AGMF). In a total of 158 experimental cases, the inrush current is characterized by the drastic variation, but the faulty current is kept almost constant. The experimental results indicate that the proposed technique is stable and reliable during discrimination between internal faults and magnetizing inrush currents, and saturation of current transformers (CTs). © 2007 IEEE.

The magnetic storm results in the transmission lines with geomagnetically induced current (GIC). And GIC happening in random has the frequency between 0.001Hz - 0.1Hz, and continues from several minutes to several hours. Based on elaborating mechanism and characteristic of GIC in grids and the influence on china power grids, the article has conducted the research work of GIC monitoring technology, and has investigated the method of sampling data of GIC, the survey algorithm and the new monitoring device. The simulated test shows, the monitoring device can effectively measure GIC which is signal of quasi direct current and randomness, has advantages of having few data to be handled and needing little memory space, etc. © 2005 IEEE.

In this paper, a novel HVDC transmission system is presented which is with parallel large capacitor connected in the DC side of the rectifier (shorted form HVDC-C). The fundamental principle and technology characteristics of HVDC-C are analyzed. The study shows that HVDC-C reduces the component of harmonic voltage and harmonic current both side in AC system and DC transmission line, makes control strategy more flexible and the filter structure more simple, etc. Furthermore, the control method, contrast to conventional HVDC and application foreground of HVDC-C is discussed briefly. The simulations based on PSCAD/EMTDC show that HVDC-C can operate steadily, has the capability to restore steadily when short circuit fault occurs, and is feasible technically and obvious in advantages. © 2005 IEEE.

A novel scheme based on equivalent instantaneous leakage inductance (EILI) to distinguish inrush currents from internal fault currents in power transformers is proposed, which is derived from the circuit differential equation. First, the EILI that represents different characteristics between the inrush current and an internal fault is defined, and its calculation methods and the criteria of two-winding and three-winding transformers are derived. This method does not require B-H curve data and the parameters of leakage inductances obtained from the transformer manufacturer. A total of 147 experimental cases verify that the EILI calculated in real time is able to clear internal fault even light fault rapidly and correctly. © 2007 IEEE.

The performance of VSC-HVDC system depends on the parameters of control system, and usually PI controllers have been used to adjust system to fulfill desired objectives. However, the optimization methods for PI controllers' parameters of VSC-HVDC system are very few up to now. A control strategy based on direct analytic expression for VSC-HVDC is presented and the corresponding control system is designed. Simplex algorithm and system objective function are adopted to optimize the PI parameters for single- and multi-objective VSC-HVDC system on the basis of the control strategy. Simulation results in PSCAD/EMTDC software testify the performance of VSC-HVDC control system with optimized PI parameters and show that the controllers with the optimized PI parameters can effectively control VSC-HVDC system. Advantages of the control system with optimized parameters, such as precise control, quickly responding time and strong robustness have been testified by step response. © 2007 IEEE.
