Wide area measurements-based model validation and its application

Simulation veracity is very important to the plan and operation of a power system. Too optimistic a simulation will put the system at risk whereas too pessimistic a simulation will waste investments. Wide area measurements (WAMs), one of the fast developing technologies in recent years, could record the synchronized phasors in the whole power grid, which provides the possibility for simulation validation work. Recent contingency reproduction work worldwide has shown the inaccuracy of current digital simulation. Therefore simulation validation and model calibration are necessary to enhance simulation veracity. However, because of the complexity of the power system, it is difficult to find the erroneous ones among a large amount of components, which makes the simulation validation a very challenging problem. A new approach for WAMs-based simulation validation work is proposed. The proposed method is very simple and easy to be implemented in the available power system simulation software. Then, the trajectory sensitivity method is applied to the parameter calibration work. Real applications via the proposed methods in the big NE power grid of China are studied, which fully show the efficiency of the proposed methods. © 2008 The Institution of Engineering and Technology.

Under the general backgrounds of fast development of economy, China' power industry is undergoing a new upsurge of infrastructure construction. With the urgent need of the whole society for reliable power supply, Condition Based Maintenance strategy is becoming the mainstream of the operation and management of the power system. In this paper, recent progress of Condition monitoring and Diagnostic technologies for major power apparatus are reviewed. Also, some statistical data on practical on-line monitoring applications in China are introduced. At last, the key problems and trends of CMD are discussed with a viewpoint future perspective. ©2007 IEEE.

For a large-scale power grid, how to obtain load model for the substation without load characteristics recorder is the problem facing measurement-based load modeling. The feasibility that the measurement-based load model of a substation is applied to every substation was studied in this paper. The simulation results indicate that it is not feasible. Consequently, two methods were adopted to solve the problem. One method is that all substations were classified into several groups and then the measurement-based load model of a substation in every group was applied to the substations of its group. The other method is to get the base vectors of load model parameters and then obtain the load model parameters of all substations based on aggregation theory. The above two methods are validated in the practice of Northeast China power Grid load modeling. This has important significance for generalizing measurement-based load modeling to large-scale power grid. © 2008 IEEE.

It has been well recognized that the load model has great effects on the power system analysis and control. However, it is also widely known that the load modeling is a quite difficult problem due to its special properties such as time-variant characteristics of the load. In this paper, the measurement-based load modeling approach and multi-curve identification technique are applied in Hushitai power station in Northeast China. In order to build practical load models that can describe the actual load characteristics without changing the model parameters too often, cluster analysis is used to classify the loads. Two main kinds of eigenvectors used in cluster analysis are also compared. Finally, based on the load classification, a new aggregation method is proposed to build load models with good generalization capability. Case studies show the efficiency of the proposed method. © 2008 DRPT.

Demmand Side Management (DSM) is now an important consideration for electric power utilities. DSM in general refers to any activity adopted by an electric utility that ultimately changes the utility's system load curve. Enhancing the DSM activities could help not only the system operate more efficiently, but also benefit the system Available Transfer Capability (ATC). This paper presents an integrated framework for evaluating impacts of DSM on ATC. A set of load management models for peak clipping/shifting and valley filling, strategic conservation and strategic load growth are presented. Composite DSM actions in the power system's diverse areas are also modeled. ATC evaluation procedure incorporated with DSM resources is given in sequential Monte Carlo simulation. The Liner-programming based ATC calculation model and time-varying load curves are employed to calculate ATC indices. The IEEE-RTS79 is used to illustrate the proposed approach and implement comparisons of impacts with and without DSM activity on ATC indices. © 2008 DRPT.

As a series FACTS device based on Voltage Source Converter (VSC), Static Series Synchronous Compensators (SSSC) can optimize power flow and improve power system stability by controlling the line impedance rapidly. According to the three levels control structure of SSSC proposed in this paper, when SSSC middle level control operates at constant impedance mode, it has characteristic of controllable impedance as viewed from the top level. In this paper, the output of SSSC is equivalent to controllable impedance and then affine nonlinear equation of the single machine infinite bus (SMIB) power system including a SSSC can be obtained without the compound coordinate transformation approach which is proposed by other documentation and the feedback exact linearization method can be used directly to obtain the SSSC top level nonlinear controller. For avoiding solving the partial differential equation, the direct method is used to realize the exact linearization simply and conveniently. For overcome the shortcoming of low robustness of exact feedback linearization approach due to uncertainty of parameters and model of controlled system, the nonlinear PID control is used to design the SSSC top level controller. Finally the paper applies Real Time Digital Simulator (RTDS) to validate the feasibility of the proposed modeling and control approach in damping out power system oscillations. © 2008 DRPT.

The comparison between Hilbert space based power theory and three other power theories including traditional power theory , instantaneous power theory put forward by Akagi and Fryze power theory are analyzed in this paper. Theconsistency and difference are indicated in several different aspects: physical meaning, mathematical concept and the derivation of expressions. Analyses shows that traditional power theory can be regarded as a special case of Hilbert space based power theory, in other words, Hilbert space based power theory can be regarded as the generalization of traditional power theory. Fryze power theory is in accordance with Hilbert space based power theory in single-phase nonsinusoidal system, instantaneous power theory is in accordance with Hilbert space based power theory in three- phase symmetrical system without zero-sequence component. The definition of active current in Hilbert space based power theory is different from it in instantaneous power theory in three-phase system. © 2008 IEEE.

The location and sizing of distribution substations integrated with urban spatial information is a optimization problem which primary characteristics are the existence of many suboptimal cost peaks and the solution space is on a discrete floating-point variables rage with some unfeasible area constraints. To solve this problem, a spatial information based parameter selfadaptive schema of DE (ISADE) is proposed The populations are formulated by spatial coordinates of candidate substation locations which chosen randomly and attempt to cover the entire planning area. A randomized self-adaptive scheme for DE mutation weighting factor F is used to increase the ability of searching out the global solution. The effectiveness of the proposed method is then tested on two practical substation planning areas of Beijing Electric power Corporation and the results are compared with PSO and standard DE. © 2008 IEEE.

Concrete-polluted silicone rubber (SIR) insulators are common nature-polluted insulators. A type of concrete-polluted SIR insulators with different content of concrete was evaluated. The flashover voltage of concrete-polluted insulators was tested after placing in artificial climatic chamber for 6 hours with ultrasonic fog device continual working. The incepted discharge area always occurs at the umbrella edge and the connected area of the hardware fittings and core rod for light concrete-polluted SIR insulators. However, the incepted discharge area always occurs at connected place of core rod and hardware fitting for heavy concrete-polluted one. The flashover voltage decreases with the increase of concrete content by a power function and the influence factor of the concrete deposit density b is 0.194. Even though after a long time transfer, the hydrophobicity of heavy concrete-polluted SIR insulators also decrease with the increase of concrete-polluted content. ©2007 IEEE.

Real time test is a necessary step for the control device of equipment before it is installed in power system. In this paper, a closed-loop test platform which is based on Real Time Digital Simulator (RTDS) is established to test the performance of FACTS device controller. In this paper, Static Var Compensator (SVC) which is installed in a power plant is used for damping Sub Synchronous Oscillation (SSO) excited by fixed series compensator installed in the transmission line which is to improve the power transfer capability. The control approach, operation mode and the install location of SVC are studied in this paper and the real controller performance has been verified by the proposed test platform. Beside, this platform can also used for the test of performance of other FACTS devices controller.
