Distributed generator (DG), with its flexible power generation, environment-friendly advantages has been more widely used in distribution system, which has brought some influence to the traditional distribution network reliability evaluation. In this paper, two different models for conventional DG and wind turbine generator (WTG) are established for reliability evaluation, based on different energy sources and operation characteristics. This paper presents a technique to obtain the WTG output using statistical wind speed information, considering to the intermittent characteristics of wind power. On this basis, an improved minimal cut set algorithm is proposed to evaluate the reliability of distribution network with DG. Finally, the simulation of a typical distribution line with DG verifies the validity of this method. © 2010 IEEE.

Modular multilevel converter (MMC) is a new multilevel converter suitable for VSC-HVDC. The principle of the submodules and converter topology are introduced in this paper. A novel carried phase shifted sinusoidal pulse width modulation (CPS-SPWM) scheme suitable for MMC in VSC-HVDC is presented. Voltage balancing among the submodules is a crucial problem of MMC. Based on the energy equipartition and voltage balance,a capacitor voltage-balancing strategy is presented in this paper with the topology of MMC and modulation. This scheme could effectively ensure each submodule at the same capacitor voltage level. The correctness and effectiveness of the schemes were verified by the simulation.

Low frequency oscillation (LFO) is harmful to power system security and stability. The traditional solutions for LFO are the power system stabilizer (PSS) with local or global signal implemented on the excitations. This paper explores the global governor-side damping controllers for LFO, i.e., controller with input from the wide area measurement system (WAMS). Design strategy of global governor-side damping controller with remote signal from WAMS is proposed, based on the partial state feedback theory. Simulation results in a 4-generator-2-area power system show the effectiveness of the proposed global governor-side damping controller.

When taking emergency control measures to eliminate the overload circuits, it is necessary to ensure the normal lines of power system won't overload. Therefore, it's necessary to analyze the security of the normal lines when take measures to eliminate overload. Based on the analysis of traditional methods of eliminating overload lines, this paper proposes an new overload control scheme based on wide area information, which can in parallel analyzing the impact of the normal line's redundancy on the regulated quantity of matching units, then the analysis results are sent to the control center, which finally determines the regulated quantity. It can ensure the normal lines won't overload when eliminating overload, and also can improve the computing speed of the whole control process. Therefore, it's very conducive to ensure the power system operating in a safe and stable state. Finally, simulation experiments verify the program is fast and reasonable. © 2010 IEEE.

The removal of overload lines can cause power flow transferring, which may give rise to some transmission lines overload. By analysis of available methods of determining transmission sections with shortcomings, this paper proposes a new way to determine transmissions section based on real-time power flows, and then deduce a new criterion of transmission section security protection based on the redundancy of normal line's power flows. A new transmission section security protection control scheme based on wide area measurement system (WAMS) is also proposed. When there is line overload, we should make a decision according to the protection criterion, if the transmission lines are safe after the overload removal, allow the backup protection to cut off the overload line;if not, block the protection. Therefore, it can avoid cascading overload tripping. At last, the validity of proposed algorithm is verified by the simulation results of CEPRI 36-bus system. © 2010 IEEE.

The value setting of the traditional distance protection has become very difficult for the distribution system with distributed generators (DGs) owing to the randomness of the DG output power. This paper proposes a new adaptive distance protection scheme to solve this problem. Firstly, on the basis of the connected point of DGs, the protected feeders are divided into different zones, with adaptive distance protection configured at the upstream side of DG. Then, based on a fault characteristic analysis of the distribution system with DG, the adaptive distance protection scheme for the distribution system with DG is studied to solve this problem. The results show that this scheme can automatically calculate the settings according to the operation mode and the output power of DG with no need for communication. Compared with the traditional adaptive protection scheme, the performance of this method is greatly improved. Simulation results on a 10 kV distribution system have verified the validity of the scheme proposed. © 2010 IEEE.

Analysis of subsynchronous resonance containing load models

In this paper, a set of five-order dynamic equations of induction motor in d-q coordinates of synchronous generator, which can be interfaced with network equations and generator equations, is derived, meanwhile the five-order linearized equations of induction motor as well as the equations of load models containing constant impedance, constant current and constant power are derived too. Utilizing the IEEE first benchmark model, the linearized models containing above-mentioned loads for analysis on subsynchronous resonance (SSR) is established. The influences of above-mentioned static load models and synthetic load model consisting of induction motor and constant impedance on damping characteristics of torsional modes are analyzed. Analysis results show that above-mentioned different load models leads to instability of different damping characteristics of torsional modes, and the analysis results may be over optimistic without regards to load models, and it is impossible to ensure the analysis results always conservative by means of a kind of load model.

The paper proposes voltage quality service, and makes comprehensive evaluation to sag energy indices to arrive at a quantitative description, then makes differential pricing of voltage quality service combined with market-oriented theory. It puts forward zonal pricing model of voltage quality service based on sag energy indices, as the foundation of comprehensive assessment of power quality and price amendment, and ultimately accomplishes pricing by power quality. It gives raw data according to Monte Carlo simulation, and then proceeds to fuzzy clustering partition of load points. After determining comprehensive weights of districts, it gives assessment value of scoring, and finally designs different correction function to tariff amendment. The simulation results show that the method of tariff amendment proposed in the paper, is applicable to needs of different users with practicality and effectiveness, and is conducive to the development of electricity market.

Based on the synthetic control of microgrid, a flexible power electronics interface is developed in this paper. Considering distributed generation types and storage devices, different control strategies are adopted in controller design for different distributed generation units. The interface comprises a couple of back-to-back VSC converters, and exports variable active power and reactive power in order to maintain the power balance inside the microgrid. Apparently, the interface separates the microgird from the AC grid, prevent harmonic component transmitting from one side to the other side and control the active power precisely flowing between microgrid and main grid. Besides, it's also in charge of reactive power compensation and keeping the microgrid voltage stable. Simulation results can approve its superiority and validity comparing with direct connection. ©2010 IEEE.
