A series of complexes of europium (III)/gadolinium (III) with 2-thienyltrifluoroacetonate (HTTA), terephthalic acid (TPA) and phenanthroline (Phen) were synthesized by coprecipitation. The resulting complexes including Eu2(TPA)(TTA)4Phen2, Eu1.4Gd0.6(TPA)(TTA)4Phen2, Eu1.0Gd1.0(TPA)(TTA)4Phen2 and Eu0.8Gd1.2(TPA)(TTA)4Phen2 were characterized by elemental analysis, IR spectroscopy and thermal stability analysis. The results of analysis indicate that the complexes obtained have similar binuclear structure with each other. The thermal stability analysis indicates that the complexes Eu2(TPA)(TTA)4Phen2and Eu1.0Gd1.0(TPA)(TTA)4Phen2 possess good thermal stability, which melt at ~241°C and decompose at ~370°C - 430°C corresponding to the formation of the complexes. The fluorescence spectra of Eu2(1-x)Gd2x(TPA)(TTA)4Phen2 (x = 0 - 1) complex powders and their doped silica gels were studied. The co-fluorescence effect of Gd3+ ions in complex powders is different from that of their doped silica gels. The optimum concentration of Gd3+ for complex powders and their doped silica gels is 0.5 and 0.3 (molar fraction), respectively. The co-fluorescence distinction of Gd3+ ions for complex powders and their doped silica gels is preferably interpreted from the proposed binuclear structure together with monomolecular compositions of the complexes for the first time. Both intermolecular energy transfer and intra molecular energy transfer in cross binuclear monomolecular EuGd(TPA)(TTA)4Phen2 are thought to be responsible for the co-fluorescence effect of the complex powders;yet only the latter is thought to be responsible for the co-fluorescence effect in silica gels, for the complex molecules in this case are isolated from each other.

Aims: Expression of the B-cell lymphoma 2(Bcl-2) has been shown to be associated with unfavorable outcome in patients with cervical cancer. However, to our knowledge there is currently no information on the role of the BCL-2-938C/A single nucleotide polymorphism in cervical cancer cases. Therefore, we investigated influence of the BCL-2-938C/A polymorphism on cervical cancer risk and prognosis in Chinese population. Methods: We genotyped BCL-2(-938C>A) polymorphism of peripheral blood DNA from160 cervical cancer patients and 225 healthy controls. Genotyping was confirmed by polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism(PCR-RFLP) and direct DNA sequencing. Results: There was no difference in the distribution of BCL-2 genotypes and frequencies of the alleles C(50.9% versus 46.7%) and A(49.1% versus 53.3%) in the cervical cancer patients and controls, respectively, suggesting that genotypes of this polymorphism do not increase the susceptibility to cervical cancer. However, there was a significant association of the BCL-2(-938C>A) polymorphism with Lymph node metastasis in cervical cancer cases. Patients harboring the CC genotype showed a significantly higher risk of lymph node metastasis with OR of 4.327, 95% CI 1.654-11.322. Conclusion: To our knowledge this is the first report documenting that the BCL2(-938C>A) polymorphism as an indicator of a high-risk group within cervical cancer patients with lymph node metastasis.

This research was undertaken to assess the in vitro antifungal potential of the essential oils of clove, cinnamon, aniseed, green prickleyash, Pricklyash peel, cumin and fennel against the five major fungal pathogens of fruits and vegetables using the method of inhibitory zone, the inhibition to the mycelial growth and the minimal inhibitory concentration.i.e, Penicillium italicum, penicillium expansum, Monilinia fructigena, Penicillium sp. and Fusarium spp. The results indicated that clove had significant antifungal activity to all strains, especially against Penicillium italicum. Cinnamon and aniseed had strong antifungal activity to all strains tested except Fusarium spp., especially against Monilinia fructigena. Moreover, Clove could inhibit mycelial growth of all pathogens completely and the minimal inhibitory concentration of clove was less than or equal to 0.5% (v/v). The present results demonstrated that clove oil could be potential sources of natural fungicides to control certain important fungal pathogens of fruits and vegetables.

First-principles calculations based on the density-functional theory were employed to study the crystal structure of vanadium phosphide compounds,such as V3P,V2P,VP,VP2 and VP4. Cohesive energy of five types of vanadium phosphide compounds was calculated to assess their structural stability. The charge density distribution and densities of states of vanadium phosphides were discussed to study further their electronic structures. The results show that the structure of metal-rich compounds is considerably more stable than the phosphorus-rich compositions,and covalent bond exists between the V and P atoms of V3P,V2P,VP,VP2 and VP4.
