LESAP is a combustion simulation application capable of simulating the chemical reactions and supersonic flows in the scramjet engines. It can be used to solve practical engineering problems and involves a large amount of computations. In this paper, we port and optimize LESAP with the OpenMP 4.0 accelerator model, targeting the heterogeneous many-core platform composed of general CPU and Intel Many Integrated Core (MIC). Based on the application characteristics, a series of techniques are proposed, including OpenMP 4.0 based task offloading, data movement optimization, grid-partition based load-balancing and SIMD optimization. The performance evaluation is done for a real combustion simulation configuration, with 532,0896 grid cells, on one Tianhe-2 supercomputer node. The results show that the resulting heterogenous code significantly outperforms the original CPU only code. When the heterogenous code runs on two Intel Xeon E5-2692 CPUs and three Intel Xeon Phi 31S1P coprocessors, it achieves a maximum speedup of 3.63x over the original code that only runs on the two Intel Xeon E5-2692 CPUs. © 2016 IEEE.

Flip-flops soft error rate evaluation approach considering internal single-event transient

The internal single-event transient(SET) induced upset in flip-flops is becoming significant with the increase of the operating frequency. However, the conventional soft error rate(SER) evaluation approach could only produce an approximate upset prediction result caused by the internal SET. In this paper, we propose an improved SER evaluation approach based on Monte Carlo simulation. A novel SET-based upset model is implemented in the proposed evaluation approach to accurately predict upsets caused by the internal SET. A test chip was fabricated in a commercial 65 nm bulk process to validate the accuracy of the improved SER evaluation approach. The predicted single-event upset cross-sections are consistent with the experimental data.

Support Vector Machines (SVMs) are powerful classification tools. However, the model training is very time-consuming when meeting large scale data sets. Some efforts have been devoted to screening out non-support vectors (non-SVs) to accelerate the training. But their processes rely on prior knowledge of other classifiers with different parameters to screen out non-SVs. In this paper, we propose Directional Indicator Support Vector Machines (DISVMs) to efficiently identify non-SVs. DISVMs employs a directional indicator, which points to the approximately orthogonal direction of the separating hyperplane, to qualitatively define the location of different samples and thus identify non-SVs. Furthermore, DISVMs leverages a two-stage algorithm: the first stage is to compute the directional indicator. The second stage is to identify non-SVs using the indicator. To avoid misjudgement, we propose CnSV method for non-SVs based on the majority rule. DISVMs screens out non-SVs with light computation and little accuracy loss. Experiments show that our approach significantly reduces the total computation cost.

One of the most important topics in Human-Centered Computing (HCC) is to recognise human's activities. In this paper, the technology of wireless-based activity recognition is introduced. By using wireless signals, one can achieve Non-Line-Of-Sight (NLOS) recognition without carrying any devices. Also, it is easy to deploy a wireless-based recognition system due to the ubiquity of wireless communication systems. The basic idea is to detect different characteristics of signal propagation that correspond to the distinct human behaviors. As a result, action recognition is performed by analyzing the distinguishable features of signal propagation. This paper introduces the basic principles and applications of wireless-based activity recognition, and discusses the challenges and related performance metrics. Finally, open problems are discussed to point out the future research trends.

This paper studies the communication pattern of data-parallel applications from the perspective of job execution, and discovers multiple inter-coflow dependencies. These inter-coflow dependencies, collectively named as semantic flow (seflow), can expose job-level semantics. It is observed that most distributed computing frameworks describe their job execution as directed acyclic graphs (DAG). So a seflow comprises not only all the coflows of a job but also the DAG-based relationship between them. Seflow, coflow and flow can be viewed as the top-down abstractions for communication of jobs.

Scalability of 3D deterministic particle transport on the Intel MIC architecture

The key to large-scale parallel solutions of deterministic particle transport problem is single-node computation performance. Hence, single-node computation is often parallelized on multi-core or many-core computer architectures. However, the number of on-chip cores grows quickly with the scale-down of feature size in semiconductor technology. In this paper, we present a scalability investigation of one energy group time-independent deterministic discrete ordinates neutron transport in 3D Cartesian geometry(Sweep3D) on Intel's Many Integrated Core(MIC) architecture, which can provide up to 62 cores with four hardware threads per core now and will own up to 72 in the future. The parallel programming model, Open MP, and vector intrinsic functions are used to exploit thread parallelism and vector parallelism for the discrete ordinates method, respectively. The results on a 57-core MIC coprocessor show that the implementation of Sweep3 D on MIC has good scalability in performance. In addition, the application of the Roofline model to assess the implementation and performance comparison between MIC and Tesla K20 C Graphics processing Unit(GPU) are also reported.

Efficient Multi-Tenant Virtual Machine Allocation in Cloud Data Centers

Virtual Machine（VM） allocation for multiple tenants is an important and challenging problem to provide efficient infrastructure services in cloud data centers. Tenants run applications on their allocated VMs, and the network distance between a tenant＇s VMs may considerably impact the tenant＇s Quality of Service（Qo S）. In this study, we define and formulate the multi-tenant VM allocation problem in cloud data centers, considering the VM requirements of different tenants, and introducing the allocation goal of minimizing the sum of the VMs＇ network diameters of all tenants. Then, we propose a Layered Progressive resource allocation algorithm for multi-tenant cloud data centers based on the Multiple Knapsack Problem（LP-MKP）. The LP-MKP algorithm uses a multi-stage layered progressive method for multi-tenant VM allocation and efficiently handles unprocessed tenants at each stage. This reduces resource fragmentation in cloud data centers, decreases the differences in the Qo S among tenants, and improves tenants＇ overall Qo S in cloud data centers. We perform experiments to evaluate the LP-MKP algorithm and demonstrate that it can provide significant gains over other allocation algorithms.

With the development of maritime information technology and computer technology, wireless communication technology in underwater networks and systems has made great progress and achieved wide range of application, which greatly promoted the development of ocean communication. Due to the presence of severe frequency selective fading, fast fading and slow fading, including all kinds of Noise interference and ISI problem under multipath propagation, especially ISI. In the meantime, in order to improve efficiency in underwater communications, a kind of signal detection algorithm is proposed in the case of interference in this article to deal with this problems-Maximum likelihood detection, this algorithm has a good complexity and relatively a high degree of precision in MIMO-OFDM system. So we do a circuit design based on the ML algorithm. The test result shows that this kind of circuit meets the requirements successfully.

Performance of the fixed-point autoencoder

The model of autoencoder is one of the most typical deep learning models that have been mainly used in unsupervised feature learning for many applications like recognition, identification and mining. Autoencoder algorithms are compute-intensive tasks. Building large scale autoencoder model can satisfy the analysis requirement of huge volume data. But the training time sometimes becomes unbearable, which naturally leads to investigate some hardware acceleration platforms like FPGA. The software versions of autoencoder often use single-precision or double-precision expressions. But the floating point units are very expensive to implement on FPGA. Fixed-point arithmetic is often used when implementing autoencoder on hardware. But the accuracy loss is often ignored and its implications for accuracy have not been studied in previous works. There are only some works focused on accelerators using some fixed bit-widths on other neural networks models. Our work gives a comprehensive evaluation to demonstrate the fix-point precision implications on the autoencoder, achieving best performance and area efficiency. The method of data format conversion, the matrix blocking methods and the complex functions approximation are the main factors considered according to the situation of hardware implementation. The simulation method of the data conversion, the matrix blocking with different parallelism and a simple PLA approximation method were evaluated in this paper. The results showed that the fixed-point bit-width did have effect on the performance of autoencoder. Multiple factors may have crossed effect. Each factor would have two-sided impacts for discarding the "abundant" information and the "useful" information at the same time. The representation domain must be carefully selected according to the computation parallelism. The result also showed that using fixed-point arithmetic can guarantee the precision of the autoencoder algorithm and get acceptable convergence speed. © 2016

Fast garment simulation with aid of hybrid bones

A data-driven method was proposed to realistically animate garments on human poses in reduced space. Firstly, a gradient based method was extended to generate motion sequences and garments were simulated on the sequences as our training data. Based on the examples, the proposed method can fast output realistic garments on new poses. Our framework can be mainly divided into offline phase and online phase. During the offline phase, based on linear blend skinning(LBS), rigid bones and flex bones were estimated for human bodies and garments, respectively. Then, rigid bone weight maps on garment vertices were learned from examples. In the online phase, new human poses were treated as input to estimate rigid bone transformations. Then, both rigid bones and flex bones were used to drive garments to fit the new poses. Finally, a novel formulation was also proposed to efficiently deal with garment-body penetration. Experiments manifest that our method is fast and accurate. The intersection artifacts are fast removed and final garment results are quite realistic.
