A survey on deep learning for polyp segmentation: techniques, challenges and future trends

Early detection and assessment of polyps play a crucial role in the prevention and treatment of colorectal cancer (CRC). Polyp segmentation provides an effective solution to assist clinicians in accurately locating and segmenting polyp regions. In the past, people often relied on manually extracted lower-level features such as color, texture, and shape, which often had problems capturing global context and lacked robustness to complex scenarios. With the advent of deep learning, more and more medical image segmentation algorithms based on deep learning networks have emerged, making significant progress in the field. This paper provides a comprehensive review of polyp segmentation algorithms. We first review some traditional algorithms based on manually extracted features and deep segmentation algorithms, and then describe benchmark datasets related to the topic. Specifically, we carry out a comprehensive evaluation of recent deep learning models and results based on polyp size, taking into account the focus of research topics and differences in network structures. Finally, we discuss the challenges of polyp segmentation and future trends in the field. © The Author(s) 2025.

240 nm AlGaN-based deep ultraviolet micro-LEDs:size effect versus edge effect

240 nm AlGaN-based micro-LEDs with different sizes are designed and ***,the external quantum efficiency(EQE)and light extraction efficiency(LEE)are systematically investigated by comparing size and edge ***,it is revealed that the peak optical output power increases by 81.83%with the size shrinking from 50.0 to 25.0μ***,the LEE increases by 26.21%and the LEE enhancement mainly comes from the sidewall light *** notably,transversemagnetic(TM)mode light intensifies faster as the size shrinks due to the tilted mesa side-wall and Al reflector ***,when it turns to 12.5μm sized micro-LEDs,the output power is lower than 25.0μm sized *** underlying mechanism is that even though protected by SiO2 passivation,the edge effect which leads to current leakage and Shockley-Read-Hall(SRH)recombination deteriorates rapidly with the size further ***,the ratio of the p-contact area to mesa area is much lower,which deteriorates the p-type current spreading at the mesa *** findings show a role of thumb for the design of high efficiency micro-LEDs with wavelength below 250 nm,which will pave the way for wide applications of deep ultraviolet(DUV)micro-LEDs.

The incomplete sulfur reduction and high ZnS re-oxidation energy barrier along with severe side reactions during the battery cycling compromise the practical application of Zn–S electrochemistry. Herein, a bifunctional electrocatalytic sulfur matrix that simultaneously accelerates the sulfur reduction and ZnS oxidation is proposed to realize a highly-efficient Zn–S cell. It is revealed that the N-heteroatom hotspots are more favorable for facilitating the conversion of S to ZnS while the CoO nanocrystal substantially lowers the ZnS activation energy barrier thereby suppressing the formation of disproportionation species(e.g.,SO_(4)^(2-)) and accumulation of inactive ZnS. Accordingly, the Co O anchored on the N-doped carbon-supported sulfur cathode delivers a high Zn^(2+)storage capacity of 1,172 m Ahg^(-1)and outstanding cycling stability with a capacity retention of 71.6% after500 cycles with a high average Coulombic efficiency of 97.8%. Simultaneously, the stable cycling of solid-state Zn–S pouch cells with an energy density of 585 Whkg^(-1)sulfuris also demonstrated. Moreover, the postmortem analysis reveals that the degradation of Zn–S cells is mainly attributed to the limited reversibility of Zn anodes rather than the ZnS decomposition and/or accumulation. The approach to the bidirectional catalysis manipulated the sulfur redox provides a new perspective to realize the theoretical potentials of Zn–S cells.

In this communication, a new kind of dual-band hybrid dielectric resonator antenna (DRA) with its array design and extended dual-polarized version is presented for fifth generation (5G) millimeterwave (mm-Wave) applications. The hybrid antenna that integrates three types of resonators of strip, slot, and DRA can generate four resonances in 28 and 39 GHz frequency bands. In this design, the strip and slot modes are used to cover the lower frequency band of 26.41-30.42 GHz, while the TE111 and TE131 modes of the DRA are employed to cover the upper frequency band of 36.05-40.88 GHz. It shows that the 5G mm-Wave bands of n257 and n260 can be covered simultaneously. It should be mentioned that our proposed hybrid antenna has a compact size of 0.34λ01 × 0.36λ01× 0.1λ01 (λ01 means the free-space wavelength at 28 GHz). Based on the compact size of the antenna element, a 1 × 5 antenna array with the capability of beam steering is designed and simulated. Wide steering angles of ±50° and ±40° can be obtained at 28 and 39 GHz frequency bands, respectively. Furthermore, an extended dual-polarized antenna configuration is also described and measured that provides similar two-port impedance and radiation performance with the single-port counterpart. © 2022 IEEE.

Utilizing existing communication infrastructures and signals for target detection encounters many challenges. Among them, the inherent self-interference in monostatic multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems, along with the inter-symbol interference resulting from continuous signal transmission, severely degrades the detection performance. To suppress the self-interference and inter-symbol interference at receiver, we propose a space-time processing method in this paper. Our approach involves the design of beamforming vectors to mitigate self-interference in the spatial domain, and the design of a filter in the time domain for suppressing inter-symbol interference. An optimization problem for beamforming vector is formulated to maximize the signal to interference plus noise ratio (SINR) at receiver. Successive convex approximation (SCA) is deployed to obtain optimal beamforming vectors. Additionally, a filter in time domain is designed to lower the sidelobe and retain the peak value of the filtering output at receiver. Meanwhile, the inter-symbol interference brought by continuous transmission is also constrained by designing the filter. Numerical simulation demonstrates the effectiveness of our space-time processing method in suppressing both self-interference and inter-symbol interference, thereby enhancing overall detection performance. © 2024 SPIE.

DTGCN: a method combining dependency tree and graph convolutional networks for Chinese long-interval named entity relationship extraction

The extraction of relationships between military entities and descriptive entities is a key task for automated construction of military knowledge graphs. This category of text unstructured imposed problems such as unfixed entity length, possibly overlong intervals between entities, and excessive pronouns. Many studies rely on traditional pattern matching and statistical learning methods. Thanks to the expansion of data volume, deep learning methods are generally used to address similar problems. However, the traditional single neural network model lacks the ability to extract the relationship information of long-interval entities and cannot tackle the above problems well. To solve these problems, a new named entity relationship extraction model called DTGCN is proposed combining dependency tree and GCN (Graph Convolutional Networks). By comparing with traditional models, the experimental results demonstrate that the method proposed in this paper can enhance F1-value by 2.28–11.11% and can provide support for the extraction of Chinese long-interval relationships. © 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer-Verlag GmbH Germany, part of Springer Nature.

Stretchable,self‐healing,and breathable skin‐biomimetic‐sensing iontronics play an important role in human physiological signal monitoring and human–computer ***,previous studies have focused on the mimicking of skin tactile sensing(pressure,strain,and temperature),and the development of more functionalities is *** this end,a superior humidity‐sensitive ionic skin is developed based on a self‐healing,stretchable,breathable,and biocompatible polyvinyl alcohol–cellulose nanofibers organohydrogel film,showing a pronounced thickness‐dependent humidity‐sensing *** as‐prepared 62.47‐μm‐thick organohydrogel film exhibits a high response(25,000%)to 98%RH,excellent repeatability,and long‐term stability(120 days).Moreover,this ionic skin has excellent resistance to large mechanical deformation and damage,and the worn‐out material can still retain its humidity‐sensing capabilities after self‐***‐sensing mechanism studies show that the induced response is mainly related to the increase of proton mobility and interfacial charge transport efficiency after water *** superior humidity responsiveness is attributed to the reduced thickness and the increased specific surface area of the organohydrogel film,allowing real‐time recording of physiological ***,by combining with a self‐designed printed circuit board,a continuous and wireless respiration monitoring system is developed,presenting its great potential in wearable and biomedical electronics.

Biomorphic supramolecular assemblies formedthrough the collaboration of rigid and flexible elements,akin to bones and ligaments, play a crucialrole in constructing advanced functional ***-intertwined ring–ring assemblies that rely oninduced fitting between rigid rings and conformationallyflexible rings have emerged as thriving representativesof this process. However, detailing howrigid and flexible rings adapt to each other for preciseself-assembly evolution under solely weak noncovalentinteractions remains limited and oftenposes challenges in structural design. We offer adistinctive solution by distorting the rigid cyclophane,thereby providing not only unique dualrecognition sites for flexible guests but also intrinsicsolid-state emission for in-situ visualization ofdynamic processes. Three adaptive self-assembliesranging from ring-within-ring, to ring-bridge-ringand finally to ring-in-ring were constructed and demonstratedto be dynamically responsive in the solidstate through harnessing the high selectivity of theinner rings.

Nanostructure engineering and composition rationalization are crucial for materials to become candidates for high-performance ***,a novel core-shell heterostructured electrode,combining CoS hollow nanorods with NiCoMn-layered double hydroxides(LDH)ternary metal nanosheets,were prepared on carbon cloth by reasonably controlled vulcanization and *** optimizing electrodeposition conditions,the material's structure and properties can be *** enhanced capacitance of the optimized carbon cloth(CC)@CoS/NiCoMn-LDH-300 electrode(4256.0 F g^(-1))lies in the open space provided by CoS and the establishment of a new charge transfer channel across the interfaces of CC@CoS/NiCoMn-LDH-300 *** is further demonstrated by Density functional theory(DFT)simulations based on OHadsorption energy,which produces faster redox charge kinetics and significantly enhances the electrode's energy storage *** hybrid supercapacitor,integrating the optimized CC@CoS/NiCoMn-LDH-300 electrode with active carbon,demonstrates the highest energy density of 86 Wh kg^(-1)(under the power density of 850 W kg^(-1))and the long cycle stability of 89.7%.This study aims to go beyond simple binary LDH by constructing a ternary LDH with a hierarchical core-shell heterostructure to provide an effective and feasible new concept for high-performance supercapacitor electrode materials via rational structure design.
