This study presents a novel microwave humidity sensor that utilizes a complementary interdigital capacitor resonator (CIDCR), an advanced design derived from the traditional complementary split ring resonator (CSRR) structure. The CIDCR design enhances the sensor's performance by concentrating the electric field in a more compact region, leading to improved sensitivity and miniaturization. The sensor is coated with a composite film of chitosan (CS) and polyacrylamide-glycerol (PAMG), combining the high moisture sensitivity of PAMG with the stability of CS. The CIDCR-based sensor demonstrates superior performance, including high sensitivity, a broad detection range, rapid response/recovery times, and excellent long-term stability. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations further elucidate the moisture-sensitive mechanisms at the molecular level, highlighting the role of hydrogen bonding in the composite film. Application tests confirm the sensor's potential for use in respiratory monitoring, non-contact sensing, and health monitoring, showcasing the advantages of the CIDCR structure in achieving enhanced humidity sensing capabilities. © 2024, The Authors. Al-based composites containing high neutron absorption cross section elements are the most promising shielding materials for spent fuel storage, but their irradiation performance is the key to their long-term service stability. In the present work, an in-situ study on the evolution and characteristics of irradiation defect clusters including dislocation loops, gas bubbles and hydrogen platelets in Al-based Gd2O3-W composites during 30 keV H2+ irradiation was carried out in a transmission electron microscope and analyzed in detail. The delamination of bubbles and the formation of tunnel structure in Al matrix were found for the first time. Hydrogen platelets in Al5W particles was first observed, and their formation and evolution and corresponding mechanism were investigated in detail. Platelets with different orientation had different growth rates, and the relationship between growth rate and dose was constructed. Besides, the irradiation-induced increment of yield strength in Al matrix was estimated. This study will provide new insights for the design and development of new Al-based rare earth composites with high resistance to irradiation damage. © 2023, The Authors. All rights reserved.

In the process of mechanical analysis for equipment and pipe of reactor coolant system (RCS), due to the severe load condition, the stress analysis cannot satisfy the evaluation criteria at times, the limit analysis and plastic analysis is necessary. This paper focus on the limit load and the plastic collapse load of the straight pipe and three-way pipe of reactor coolant system (such as the nozzle of main equipment and the pipe of main system) under combined loads, the analytical method and the finite element (FE) method are adopted in this paper. Get the limit load curve and the plastic collapse load curve of straight pipe and three-way pipe under combined loads, the effect of load history and structure size is analyzed. Tangent intersection criterion (TI) and Plastic work-tangent criterion (PWT) are adopted to study the plastic collapse load curve of straight pipe under combined load of pressure and bending moment. Get the theoretical equation of the limit load and plastic collapse curve of straight pipe under combined loads;get the theoretical equation of the limit load surface of straight pipe under combined load of pressure, bending moment and torque. Titanium alloys are widely used in various fields for its high strength, good corrosion resistance and high heat resistance. Many countries in the world have recognized the importance of titanium alloy materials, and have developed and applied them in practice. In order to accurately describe uniaxial tensile behavior and ratcheting behavior of material, a series of experiments of TA17 were conducted at room temperature and 350 ℃, including the uniaxial tensile experiments of TA17 with different processing techniques, the strain controlled cyclic experiments and the stress controlled cyclic experiments. The uniaxial tensile curves of materials with different processing techniques are discussed. The effects of different strain amplitudes of cyclic straining were analyzed. The effects of different combinations of mean stress and stress amplitude were analyzed. Finally, the uniaxial stress and strain curves with different processing techniques, cyclic stress and strain curves under different strain amplitudes and stress amplitude were obtained. The results show that the stress and strain curves of longitudinal plates and forgings are the lowest, while the stress and strain curves of transverse plates and bars are the highest. TA17 exhibited significant cyclic stability under different strain amplitudes and has obvious ratcheting behavior under asymmetric stress control. The obtained conclusions are helpful to improve the mechanical properties of TA17 and establish the cyclic constitutive model in the following work. © Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2020.

Microstructure and impact toughness of 16MND5 reactor pressure vessel steel manufactured by electrical additive manufacturing

Electrical additive manufacturing can improve manufacturing efficiency and reduce the cost of 16MND5 reactor pres-sure vessel steel. Impact tests were conducted to compare the impact toughness of 16MND5 steels manufactured by the electrical additive manufacturing and conventional forging, respectively. It is found that the impact toughness of electrical additive manufacturing specimen was slightly higher than that of conventional forging specimen. The characterizations of microstructure show that there were large ferrites and carbides in electrical additive manufacturing specimen. The fracture mechanisms of electrical additive manufacturing specimen were that microvoids or microcracks were prone to nucleate at the large ferrite/bainite interface and large carbide/bainitic ferrite interface, where the stress concentration was high. In addi-tion, the block size and high-angle grain boundaries played a vital role in hindering crack propagation of electrical additive manufacturing specimen, helping to improve the impact energy and leading to a low ductile–brittle transition temperature. The results suggest that the electrical additive manufacturing technology was an effective method to enhance the impact toughness of 16MND5 steel.

In this paper, the output synchronization in large-scale discrete-time networks is examined by utilizing the novel phase tool, where the agent dynamics are allowed to be significantly heterogeneous. The synchronization synthesis problem is formulated and thoroughly investigated, with the goal of characterizing the allowable heterogeneity among the agents to ensure synchronization under a uniform controller. The solvability condition is provided in terms of the phases of the residue matrices of the agents at the persistent modes. When the condition is satisfied, a design procedure is given, producing a low-gain synchronizing controller. Numerical examples are given to illustrate the results.

This paper presents a collaborative fall detection and response system integrating Wi-Fi sensing with robotic assistance. The proposed system leverages channel state information (CSI) disruptions caused by movements to detect falls in non-line-of-sight (NLOS) scenarios, offering non-intrusive monitoring. Besides, a companion robot is utilized to provide assistance capabilities to navigate and respond to incidents autonomously, improving efficiency in providing assistance in various environments. The experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed system in detecting falls and responding effectively. Copyright © 2024, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Effect of variable stroke on combustion characteristics and stability of a free-piston engine generator

The free-piston engine generator (FPEG) features a variable stroke structure, offering significant advantages in multi-fuel adaptability and high-efficiency combustion technologies. Stroke control and design directly affect combustion regulation and system performance, and thus represent a key challenge in FPEG development. Existing studies on stroke variation mostly rely on numerical simulations, often neglecting fuel short-circuit losses and lacking experimental validation of actual combustion performance and stability. In this study, an experimental approach was employed to investigate the effects of stroke length variation (47–55 mm) on the combustion characteristics, system performance, and operational stability of an FPEG. The results show that shortening the stroke reduced the indicated work by 4.3 % from 55 mm to 47 mm, but increased the operating frequency by 14.7 %, resulting in a 10 % improvement in indicated power. Moreover, shorter stroke lengths enhanced both indicated thermal efficiency and fuel economy, with the indicated thermal efficiency increasing by 19.6 % and the minimum ISFC reaching 336 g/(kW·h). In terms of stability, the short-stroke configuration markedly reduced cycle-to-cycle variations in both combustion and system operation: COV_Pmax and COV_IMEP decreased by 34.5 % and 50.6 %, respectively, while COV_f dropped to 0.59 %.This study is the first to experimentally reveal the influence of stroke variation on FPEG performance, providing valuable data support for structural optimization and performance control of FPEG systems. © 2025 Elsevier Ltd

When the vanadium battery was running, pump frequency and current density were two frequently adjusted parameters. When the pump frequency was constant, the main flow-electrical parameter variation needs to be further studied. To this end, a 10 kW vanadium battery was built. When the current density was relatively high during the charge-discharge, the flow-electrical parameters of the cathode and anode including the temperature, flow resistance, turning voltage difference, capacity loss, energy loss and energy efficiency were studied. Besides, the compositions of capacity and energy were introduced, and the loss calculation scheme was proposed. Firstly, in flow analysis, the flow resistance was defined, which represents the flow state of the electrolyte. It was found that the flow resistance was nearly linear with the temperature. Secondly, in electric analysis, the turning voltage difference increased with the current density increasing. For the same current density, the total energy loss of charge was less than the discharge, and the energy loss of bypass was less than the internal resistance. With the current density increasing, the energy efficiency decreased. The research can be provided insight into the optimizing operation for the vanadium battery. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

Identification of the non-stationarity of extreme temperature events and teleconnections with solar activity and large-scale atmospheric circulation: A case study in the Yangtze River Economic Belt

In recent decades， extreme climate events have become a major problem worldwide. To understand the uncertainty in the response of extreme events to global warming， regional assessments are required for various climatic and geographic regions. The spatiotemporal distribution of extreme temperature events in the Yangtze River Economic Belt (YREB) from 1960 to 2019， including interannual changes and their teleconnections with solar activity and large-scale atmospheric circulation， were analyzed using eight indices of extreme temperature events. Over the past six decades， the climate in the YREB region has seen a warming trend， characterized by an increase in extreme warm events and a decrease in extreme cold events. The extreme temperature indices exhibit strong spatial variability. The warm extremes display a significant upward trend across the YREB， while cold extremes are primarily concentrated in the western part of the region. In recent decades， both warm and cold extremes have significant interannual variations， and these events predominantly oscillate over periods of less than four years. After 1985， the relationship between El Ni?o-Southern Oscillation (ENSO)， Arctic Oscillation (AO)， Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO) and extreme temperature events has changed significantly compared with pre-1985， and the direction of the phase angle can determine the positive and negative effects of the two time-series. ENSO， AO and PDO mainly have positive impacts on extreme temperature events， with ENSO and AO exerting greater impacts than PDO. In contrast， solar activity mainly has a negative impact on these events. Furthermore， the notable interdecadal changes in extreme temperature events， especially warm extremes， may be caused by the shift in the PDO phase. Therefore， the results of the study are important for the YREB region to take effective measures to mitigate the potential impacts of human activities on regional warming.
