Learning automata (LA) represent important leaning mechanisms with applications in automated system design, biological system modeling, computer vision, and transportation. They play the critical roles in modeling a process as well as generating the appropriate signal to control it. They update their action probabilities in accordance with the inputs received from the environment and can improve their own performance during operations. The action probability vector in LA takes charge of two functions: 1) The cost of convergence, i.e., the size of sampling budget;2) The allocation of sampling budget among actions to identify the optimal one. These two intertwined functions lead to a problem: The sampling budget mostly goes to the currently estimated optimal action due to its high action probability regardless whether it can help identify the real optimal action or not. This work proposes a new class of LA that separates the allocation of sampling budget from the action probability vector. It uses the action probability vector to determine the size of sampling budget and then uses Optimal computing Budget Allocation (OCBA) to accomplish the allocation of sampling budget in a way that maximizes the probability of identifying the true optimal action. Simulation results verify its significant speedup ranging from 10.93% to 65.94% over the best existing LA algorithms.

The scale of cloud services keeps increasing over time, significantly introducing huge challenges in system manageability and reliability. Designing coordination services in cloud is the right track to solve the above problems. However, existing coordination services (e.g., Chubby and ZooKeeper) only perform well in read-intensive scenario and small ensemble scales. To this end, we propose Giraffe, a scalable distributed coordination service. There are three important contributions in our design. (1) Giraffe organizes coordination servers using interior-node-disjoint trees for better scalability. (2) Giraffe employs a novel Paxos protocol for strong consistency and fault-tolerance. (3) Giraffe supports hierarchical data organization and in-memory storage for high throughput and low latency. We evaluate Giraffe on a high performance computing test-bed. The experimental results show that Giraffe gains much better write performance than ZooKeeper when server ensemble is large. Giraffe is nearly 300% faster than ZooKeeper on update operations when ensemble size is 50 servers. Experiments also show that Giraffe reacts and recovers more quickly than ZooKeeper against node failures. © 2014 IEEE.

Object tracking is one of the most important components in numerous applications of computer vision. Much progress has been made in recent years. The Tracking-Learning-Detection (TLD) algorithm achieves excellent performance on a set of challenging video sequences. However, classical TLD algorithm fails to track non-rigid pedestrian as complicated appearance, varying viewpoints, shape changes and occlusions. In this paper, we follow the TLD and propose a robust KMD framework which consists of the Kalman filter tracker, random ferns pedestrian detector and the pedestrian model. During the tracking process the tracker and detector are complementary: the Kalman filter tracker predicts the motion, the pedestrian detector searches the best-match appearance and the pedestrian model combines performance of both to determine final result and generate new samples for learning. Experimental results show our framework comparatively improves performance for pedestrian tracking in surveillance videos. © (2014) Trans Tech Publications, Switzerland.

This paper discusses using the battery energy storage system (BESS) to mitigate intermittency and sustain stability of distribution system integrating high penetration level of renewable energy resources (RER). The goal of the control is to have the BESS provide as much smoothing as possible, so that the RER power can be dispatchable in some kind and reliable. The effectiveness of model predictive control (MPC) based approach proposed in this paper have been tested by detail case study, also compared with the day ahead control strategy, load following strategy, and normal situation without energy storage which are usually used before. The result shows that the proposed MPC based approach is more practical, and more robust. © (2014) Trans Tech Publications, Switzerland.

This paper introduces research and development results of extended functions on our network virtualization infrastructure which achieve advanced network virtualization. Our results achieved to meet five requirements which are resource abstraction, resource isolation, resource elasticity, deep programmability and authentication. In addition, we proposed evolvable architecture and extended network virtualization for edge network and terminals. We also deployed our system on JGN-X testbed.

Remaining useful life (RUL) is of great importance to energy supply systems, such as battery pack. In this paper, an optimization model of RUL for the paralleled battery pack on expansion mode is proposed based on the basic concept of RUL and the capacity fading model. genetic algorithm (GA) is adopted to solve the problem. Case study shows that the battery pack's RUL can be extended by using the optimization model and GA. © (2014) Trans Tech Publications, Switzerland.

Maximum a posteriori probability inference algorithms for Markov Random Field are widely used in many applications, such as computer vision and machine learning. Sequential tree-reweighted message passing (TRW-S) is an inference algorithm which shows good quality in finding optimal solutions. However, the performance of TRW-S in software cannot meet the requirements of many real-time applications, due to the sequential scheme and the high memory, bandwidth and computational costs. This paper proposes Patra, a novel parallel tree-reweighted message passing architecture, which involves a fully pipelined design targeting FPGA technology. We build a hybrid CPU/FPGA system to test the performance of Patra for stereo matching. Experimental results show that Patra provides about 100 times faster than a software implementation of TRW-S, and 12 times faster than a GPU-based message passing algorithm. Compared with an existing design in four FPGAs, we can achieve 2 times speedup in a single FPGA. Moreover, Patra can work at video rate in many cases, such as a rate of 167 frame/sec for a standard stereo matching test case, which makes it promising for many real-time applications. © 2014 Technical University of Munich (TUM).

Datacenter networks suffer unpredictable performance due to a lack of application level bandwidth guarantees. A lot of attentions have been drawn to solve this problem such as how to provide bandwidth guarantees for Virtualized Machines (VMs), proportional bandwidth share among tenants, and high network utilization under peak traffic. However, existing solutions fail to cope with highly dynamic traffic in datacenter networks. In this paper, we consider the effects of large numbers of short flows and massive bursty traffic in the datacenter, and design a novel distributed rate allocation algorithm based on the Logistic model under the control-theoretic framework. The theoretical analysis and experimental results using OpenFlow show that our algorithm not only guarantees the bandwidth for VMs, but also provides fast convergence to efficiency and fairness, and smooth response to bursty traffic.

The real solutions number of the switching angles for the SHEPWM inverter has been discussed in this paper. Firstly, the SHEPWM equations were transformed to polynomial equations with inequality constrains by using the multiple-angle formulas and variables substitution, then, the equivalent groebner bases of the polynomial equations were computed, finally, the real solutions number of the SHEPWM equations were discussed with the mechanical proving theory and algorithm of the semialgebraic systems. The conclusion of there is only one solutions for the single phase SHEPWM inverter with less than 7 switching points in a quarter period and the theoretical maximum modulation ratio were derived for the first time. The experiments and simulations verify the correctness of these conclusions.

Deadlocks are a rather undesirable phenomenon in flexible manufacturing systems(FMSs).This work,by adding monitors,develops a deadlock prevention policy for FMSs that can be modeled by a class of Petri nets called-S3 PR ***,an algorithm is given to reduce an S3 PR via *** on it,-resources in-S3 PRs are classified into A--resources and ***,for an-S3 PR with only B--resources,it is proved that a maximally permissive liveness-enforcing supervisor can be designed by M-controlling all the emptied strict minimal siphons(SMSs).For an-S3 PR containing A--resources,a liveness-enforcing supervisor can be designed by iteratively reducing the net via A--resources and adding the corresponding ***,a comprehensive deadlock prevention algorithm for-S3 PRs is *** FMS example is used to illustrate its application.
