Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have identified >250 loci for body mass index (BMI), implicating pathways related to neuronal biology. Most GWAS loci represent clusters of common, noncoding variants from which pinpointing causal genes remains challenging. Here we combined data from 718,734 individuals to discover rare and low-frequency (minor allele frequency (MAF) < 5%) coding variants associated with BMI. We identified 14 coding variants in 13 genes, of which 8 variants were in genes (ZBTB7B, ACHE, RAPGEF3, RAB21, ZFHX3, ENTPD6, ZFR2 and ZNF169) newly implicated in human obesity, 2 variants were in genes (MC4R and KSR2) previously observed to be mutated in extreme obesity and 2 variants were in GIPR. The effect sizes of rare variants are ~10 times larger than those of common variants, with the largest effect observed in carriers of an MC4R mutation introducing a stop codon (***35Ter, MAF = 0.01%), who weighed ~7 kg more than non-carriers. Pathway analyses based on the variants associated with BMI confirm enrichment of neuronal genes and provide new evidence for adipocyte and energy expenditure biology, widening the potential of genetically supported therapeutic targets in obesity.

Current modeling of infectious diseases allows for the study of complex and realistic scenarios that go from the population to the individual level of description. However, most epidemic models assume that the spreading process takes place on a single level (be it a single population, a metapopulation system, or a network of contacts). In particular, interdependent contagion phenomena can be addressed only if we go beyond the scheme-one pathogen-one network. In this paper, we propose a framework that allows us to describe the spreading dynamics of two concurrent diseases. Specifically, we characterize analytically the epidemic thresholds of the two diseases for different scenarios and compute the temporal evolution characterizing the unfolding dynamics. Results show that there are regions of the parameter space in which the onset of a disease’s outbreak is conditioned to the prevalence levels of the other disease. Moreover, we show, for the susceptible-infected-susceptible scheme, that under certain circumstances, finite and not vanishing epidemic thresholds are found even at the limit for scale-free networks. For the susceptible-infected-removed scenario, the phenomenology is richer and additional interdependencies show up. We also find that the secondary thresholds for the susceptible-infected-susceptible and susceptible-infected-removed models are different, which results directly from the interaction between both diseases. Our work thus solves an important problem and paves the way toward a more comprehensive description of the dynamics of interacting diseases.

Business process reengineering frequently occurs in complex service systems because of its dynamic,random and varied running *** solve the problem,we proposed a novel SOA portfolio optimization algorithm based on value model and graph ***,in order to strengthen the QoS analytical capacity of SOA,the value model is introduced into the SOA system to describe customer's service requirements of both function and non-function ***,a directed graph of SOA services and a value dependence graph of services are provided,as well as a service portfolio optimization algorithm designed based on the ***,the simulated data case is used to analyze and verify the methods proposed in this *** result shows that introducing the value model and graph algorithm into the SOA-based service system can effectively improve the quality of service portfolio.

Occupants' comfort is the primary target in a building operation. However their efforts are often neglected and ruled out from traditional control strategies of energy-efficient building management systems. Occupant-engaged control strategies have recently attracted many research attentions and demonstrated great potentials for energy saving. With them, occupants' behavior is incorporated into the closed-loop control methods in which their initiatives actively contribute to building services and energy utility by explicitly expressing their preferences. This work proposes an occupant-engaged demand response (DR) strategy for building automation in which occupants are actively engaged to adapt their energy consumption in response to incentive opportunities designed by facility managers. A model-based study and a Nash-Equilibrium-based solution are provided to assist facility managers with the design of social incentive policies to promote occupant participation, along with the guarantee of lucrativeness for a DR event.

Growth of NaCl and Fe/NaCl/Fe Magnetic tunneling junctions on Si (100) has been achieved by using a high vacuum electron-beam deposition system. Epitaxial tunnel junctions turn out to be prone to pinholes as well as electrode oxidation. Instead, the best tunneling magnetoresistance we have achieved in this system is on polycrystalline tunnel barriers with thin Mg insertion, and reaching 22.3% at room temperature.

Verifying a Carry Look-Ahead Adder with Propositional Projection Temporal Logic

This paper presents a case study for veri- fying a carry look-ahead adder using the axiom system of Propositional projection temporal logic (PPTL). To this end, the syntax, semantics and axiom system of PPTL are briefly introduced. Further, functions and architectures of the carry look-ahead adder are presented. In addition, four lemmas are proved with the axiom system of PPTL. Fi- nally, the correctness of the adder is verified based on the lemmas and the axiom system of PPTL. The case study shows that the axiom system for PPTL is workable.

Zigbee provides a connection to a variety of wireless devices and solves the problem of the communicating between different protocols. ZigBee can provide wireless communication which is low rate, low complexity, short distance and low cost. Due to the existence of various attacks in the wireless transmission, security becomes a bottleneck for Zigbee applications. In the study, we designed the model based on dynamic key which is sent in Zigbee network and analyzed its performances. © 2013 Asian Network for Scientific Information.

Based on principal component analysis (PCA) and support vector machine (SVM), a new method for the fault diagnosis of TE Process is proposed. The fault recognition based on kernel principal component analysis (KPCA) is analyzed and SVM is employed as a classifier for fault classification. To establish a more efficient SVM model, genetic algorithm (GA) is used to determine the optimal kernel parameter γ and penalty parameter C of SVM with the highest accuracy and generalization ability. The classification accuracy of this GA-SVM approach is tested by real data of TE Process and compared with some other related methods such as artificial neural network. The experimental results indicate that the classification accuracy of this GA-SVM is more superior than that of some artificial neural network.

In this paper, we investigate the synchronization problem for nonlinearly coupled networks under periodically intermittent pinning control, where the coupling matrix denoting network topology is assumed to be symmetric. A sufficient condition to guarantee global synchronization is presented. Moreover, a centralized adaptive intermittent control is designed and its validity is rigorously proved. Finally, some numerical examples are presented to demonstrate the correctness of obtained theoretical results.
