Cosmic strings are potential gravitational wave (GW) sources that can be probed by pulsar timing arrays (PTAs). In this work we develop a detection algorithm for a GW burst from a cusp on a cosmic string, and apply it to Parkes PTA data. We find four events with a false alarm probability less than 1%. However further investigation shows that all of these are likely to be spurious. As there are no convincing detections we place upper limits on the GW amplitude for different event durations. From these bounds we place limits on the cosmic string tension of G μ∼ 10−5, and highlight that this bound is independent from those obtained using other techniques. We discuss the physical implications of our results and the prospect of probing cosmic strings in the era of Square Kilometre Array (SKA). © 2020, CC BY.

MapReduce is an efficient tool for data-intensive applications. Hadoop, an open-source implementation of MapReduce, has been widely adopted and experienced by some enterprises and scientific computing communities. However, when users intend to run a MapReduce program in Hadoop, they have to set a number of configuration parameters to make sure the program runs efficiently. Users often run into performance problems because they are unaware of how to set these parameters. To address these performance problems, we focus on the optimization opportunities presented by the high configurability of Hadoop, and propose an automation tool named HCOpt for performance optimization of Hadoop configuration parameters. HCOpt uses a Profile Engine to collect monitoring information from running MapReduce programs, a Prediction Engine to estimate the performance of a given Hadoop configuration and a genetic-based search algorithm to find an optimized configuration in the large search space. Our evaluation shows that HCOpt reduces the job completion time of Hadoop applications by up to 20 % when compared to applications run with configuration parameters that suggested by the rule-based optimization. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2016.

This paper develops a coarse-to-fine framework for single-image super-resolution (SR) reconstruction. The coarse-to-fine approach achieves high-quality SR recovery based on the complementary properties of both example learning-and reconstruction-based algorithms: example learning-based SR approaches are useful for generating plausible details from external exemplars but poor at suppressing aliasing artifacts, while reconstruction-based SR methods are propitious for preserving sharp edges yet fail to generate fine details. In the coarse stage of the method, we use a set of simple yet effective mapping functions, learned via correlative neighbor regression of grouped low-resolution (LR) to high-resolution (HR) dictionary atoms, to synthesize an initial SR estimate with particularly low computational cost. In the fine stage, we devise an effective regularization term that seamlessly integrates the properties of local structural regularity, nonlocal self-similarity, and collaborative representation over relevant atoms in a learned HR dictionary, to further improve the visual quality of the initial SR estimation obtained in the coarse stage. The experimental results indicate that our method outperforms other state-of-the-art methods for producing high-quality images despite that both the initial SR estimation and the followed enhancement are cheap to implement. © 2012 IEEE.

We revisited ab initio evaluations of the energy barriers along the possible diffusion paths of the defects in rutile TiO2. By using a method carefully considering the cancellation of the self-interaction, Ti interstitials hopping along c-axis are identified as the major diffusion directing to [001] surface. The conclusion is contradicting to any of previous theoretical works, and the discrepancy is explained by the overestimation of the radius of defects due to the poor cancellations in the previous works. The updated prediction here can explain the superior photocatalysis activity in [001] surface to [110]. Copyright © 2019, The Authors. All rights reserved.

In this paper, we present a deep learning based approach to performing the whole-day prediction of the traffic speed for the elevated highway. In order to learn the temporal features of traffic speed data in a hierarchical way, an improved convolutional neural network (CNN) with asymmetric kernels is proposed. Speed data are collected from loop detectors of Yan’an elevated highway of Shanghai. To test the performance of the presented method, we compare it with some conventional approaches of traffic speed estimation. Experimental results demonstrate that our method outperforms all of them. © IFIP International Federation for Information Processing 2017.

Traffic three elements consisting of flow, speed and occupancy are very important parameters representing the traffic information. Prediction of them is a fundamental problem of Intelligent Transportation systems (ITS). Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) has been proved to be an effective deep learning method for extracting hierarchical features from data with local correlations such as image, video. In this paper, in consideration of the spatiotemporal correlations of traffic data, we propose a CNN-based method to forecast flow, speed and occupancy simultaneously by converting raw flow, speed and occupancy (FSO) data to FSO color images. We evaluate the performance of this method and compare it with other prevailing methods for traffic prediction. Experimental results show that our method has superior performance. © IFIP International Federation for Information Processing 2017.

At present,multi-database identity authentication is mostly based on centralized global user management *** this paper,we analyze the defects of the current identity authentication in multi-database and propose a new single sign on for multi-database identity authentication based on the idea of database union *** with the traditional methods of authentication,the scheme adopts decentralized authentication mode which without centralized management,so it can avoid single point failure and single point overload,and it can also prevent password theft attack,replay attack and other various *** the case analysis,we know that the new scheme can improve the safety of the multi-database system.

A practical problem facing Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) cloud users is how to minimize their costs by choosing different pricing options based on their own demands. Recently, cloud brokerage service is introduced to tackle this problem. But due to the perishability of cloud resources, there still exists a large amount of idle resource waste during the reservation period of reserved instances. This idle resource waste problem is challenging cloud broker when buying reserved instances to accommodate users' job requests. To solve this challenge, we find that cloud users always have low priority jobs (e.g., non latency-sensitive jobs) which can be delayed to utilize these idle resources. With considering the priority of jobs, two problems need to be solved. First, how can cloud broker leverage jobs' priorities to reserve resources for profit maximization? Second, how to fairly price users' job requests with different priorities when previous studies either adopt pricing schemes from IaaS clouds or just ignore the pricing issue. To solve these problems, we first design a fair and priority aware pricing scheme, PriorityPricing, for the broker which charges users with different prices based on priorities. Then we propose three dynamic algorithms for the broker to make resource reservations with the objective of maximizing its profit. Experiments show that the broker's profit can be increased up to 2.5× than that without considering priority for offline algorithm, and 3.7× for online algorithm.

In this paper, we consider a general and practical complex network model, in which there exist couplings with and without time delays, and the coupled functions among nodes are also nonlinear. For this network model, we investigate its finite-time synchronization by designing some general static and adaptive controllers respectively. Using the finite-time stability theory, some useful finite-time synchronization criteria are derived. Finally, numerical simulations are given to demonstrate the correctness of our theoretical results.

In this paper, we investigate the cluster synchronization problem with unbounded time-varying delays for complex networks by adding some external controllers. Previous related works mainly focused on bounded time-varying or constant time delays, which may not be consistent with the real world. Therefore, unbounded time-varying delays is considered in this paper,which can be regarded as the main difference between this paper and previous related works. We discuss the necessary condition for cluster synchronization with external controllers, which can be used to guide the design of external controllers. Then, by using the Lyapunov function method, we prove that cluster synchronization could be achieved under some sufficient ***, the effects of time delays for the convergence of cluster synchronization are also discussed, which are named as theμ-cluster synchronization. Finally, numerical simulations are presented to show the validity of the obtained criteria.
