This paper presents a novel approach for dynamic congestion management (DCM) in an unbundled power system. In the DCM model, the objective function is constructed using the cost of the generation increment and an algebraic nonlinear programming is formulated. To establish the linear inequality of transmission limit constraints and transient stability constraints, generator shift factor and trajectory sensitivity are calculated, with which the nonlinear programming problem transforms into a linear programming. Hence, sequential quadratic programming is employed to assess the generation rescheduling for minimizing the objective function. A case study of DCM is performed on the 10-generator New England test system. Comparison between the proposed DCM and static congestion management (SCM) model verifies the validity of the model and the effectiveness of the method.

The computer-supported decision-making system has become an essential tool for the sustainable growth and expansion planning of modern urban power distribution network. Current packages with planning functions are independent packages, which are limited in the academic research. Presently, in Shanghai Municipal Electric Power Company and its subordinate units, a geographic information system(GIS)-based production management system(PMS) has been applied successfully as the working platform in most departments, which makes the further research on the computer-aided decision-making system possible and feasible. Taking the PMS as the graphics supporting platform, this paper studies and develops a practical GIS-based decision-making support system for urban distribution network expansion planning, which establishes a primary foundation for information-based planning, daily-frequent planning and elaborate planning. Firstly, the physical structure of the system is designed with a four-layer hierarchical architecture, including the data layer, platform layer, application layer and performance layer, which is suitable for object-oriented development to ensure the security and stability of the system. Secondly, to satisfy the requirements of distribution expansion planning, the main functions of the system are divided into seven modules according to the planning process abstracted in the computer, including the module of current situation analysis, load forecasting, substation locating and sizing, network planning, cable channel planning, economic evaluation of planning and so on. There is at least one or one set of practical mathematical models and methods for planning adopted in each module to ensure the accuracy and reasonableness of the final planning results. Finally, an actual planning of Shanghai, China is accomplished with the expansion planning system. ANN-based data-mining techniques are introduced to detect the most influential variables causing the mismatch of super-heater outlet steam temperatures. The strategies are: (1) Rough set selection: the rough variables set most likely to have possible effects on the mismatch of the outlet steam temperatures is deduced from about 3000 variables available in the power system data-base, by correlation analysis.(2) Relation capturing with ANN: the variables in the rough set are used as the input of an ANN, with the samples being appropriately chosen to train the ANN. (3) Sensitivity calculation of each ANN input for each training sample. (4) Influential variables set extraction: the criterion is to derive the sub-set characterized by the outstanding variables with the largest average of absolute sensitivity values. The influential variable set thus obtained, not intuitively known prior to the investigation, is found to be consistent with the general understanding of the power-plant engineers.

XLPE cables are widely used in urban distribution systems because of their excellent mechanical, heat and electrical properties. However, water tree, formed due to the existence of water and intense electric field, is one of the primary causes of aging breakdown. There used to be several methods, such as insulation impedance method and DC leakage current method for the detection of bridged water tree, which are non-effective for the diagnosis of non-bridged one. Residual Charge Method is known for its effectiveness in the diagnosis of non-bridged one. In this paper, pulse voltage is applied to the DC voltage charged XLPE cable after grounding. It is called 'Pulsed-type Residual Charge Method' which is found to be more effective for the diagnosis of non-bridged water tree. The effects of DC voltage, grounding time and pulse voltage on the amount of residual charge are studied. Also, the releasing mechanism of residual charge by pulse is discussed. Accumulated results show that the improved method has a high resolution for the diagnosis of water tree degradation degree.

Probabilistic risk assessment method for cascading failure of power system

The article discussed frame structure of risk assessment for cascading failure, namely decision of component outage model, choice of initial system state, analysis of continual fault process, and risk computation. Besides protection maloperation model, this paper thought over other dependent outage models such as stuck breaker, component-group outage, station-originated outage and common cause outage;the article chose initial system state of cascading failure by using of function group decomposition technique and event tree analysis, provided simplification principle and processing method of continual fault process analysis, then proposed one new probabilistic risk assessment method for cascading failure. Through the example, the article provided risk index of component outage models and risk ranking of system components. The simulation demonstrated that, the total risk value of cascading failure grows along with load factor growth. When load factor is smaller than 1, the total risk of cascading failure is mainly undertaken by protection maloperation model;when load factor achieved critical points of 1 and 1.262, the total risk value has two times of sudden changes. The first critical point is affected by common cause outage, the second critical point is affected by single component forced outage. © 2009 Chin. Soc. for Elec. Eng.

HAPF (HAPF) is composed of an active power filter (APF) and a passive power filter (PPF), for integrated harmonic compensation of unbalanced or nonlinear loads and compensation of reactive power. The PPF tunes at special harmonics and compensates reactive power to improve the power factor. The APF is composed of two full controlled three-phase PWM inverters. It traces harmonic current on system line, and works as a controlled voltage source, injecting current into system to eliminating harmonic current generated by nonlinear loads. In structure design, the PPF supplies fundamental series resonance brunch for APF to avoid enduring fundamental voltage. It lowers the rated capacity of APF and reduces the volume of APF. The adaptive increment control method is employed, which is simple and fast responding. It enables the control of APF independent of the parameters of PPF. It makes the filter flexible to harmonics, and overcome the effect of input current of APF. simulation and experiment have been carried out. The result shows that the design achieves expected goals. The harmonic in system is reduced below expect level, and the filter is fast response and adaptive to the harmonic current.

A genetic learning scheme is proposed for coordinated voltage control (CVC). This leaning control combines GA with a long term memory. The optimal search of GA can refine the knowledge in memory. At the same time, stored knowledge can be exploited to improve the search of GA. This learning strategy provides a fast voltage control and the control performance can be improved gradually.

This paper investigates the concerns associated with the previously proposed optimal coordinated voltage emergency control (OCVEC) model. The issues in concern include the influence of control delay on the performance of OCVEC, the effects of parameter errors of load model on the OCVEC performance, and the methodology to select the vulnerable buses being included in the voltage stability performance index. In addition, the computational complexity of OCVEC model is assessed.

A new methodology for obtaining the optimal power flow with transient stability constraints is proposed in this paper. The main algorithm decomposes the problem into conventional optimal power flow and optimal control sub-problems, which are solved independently. In the process of optimal control, the transient stability index expressed by semi-infinite dimension constraints is converted into two dimensional inequality constraints by integration of angle and voltage, respectively. The optimal control direction is formed by the gradient of control variables, which is obtained by solving the system trajectory expressed by the differential algebraic equations and trajectory sensitivity expressed by the linear time-dependent dynamic system. Test results on the New England 39-bus power system have verified the effectiveness and reliability of the proposed methodology.

A micro-grid can increase the reliability of energy supplies by disconnecting from the grid in the case of network faults or reduced power quality. The techniques that have been investigated to control micro-grids in both modes are summarized as well as those proposed to maintain stability during the transitions from one mode to the other. This paper first introduces the micro-grid planning structure in Shandong Electric Power Research Institute (SEPRI) and discusses the various feasible control approaches used and presents for micro-grid. Then, based on modeling different types of distributed generations and energy storage equipment, the SEPRI Micro-Grid model was simulated with several operating modes under peer to peer control strategy. The importance of an energy storage to assist stability during transition between the operating modes is emphasized.
