The paper introduces a sensorless control method which is called high frequency (HF) injection for salient-pole permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM). High frequency signal injection means to inject three phase symmetric constant amplitude voltage into the stator of PMSM. If the rotor has saliency, the current magnetic field of HF voltage signal must be influenced by the modulating function of the salient pole rotor, and then a HF carrier wave relating to the position of the rotor will appear. From these carrier wave signals, the position information of the rotor can be further extracted, and the special position of the rotor can be accordingly decided. The self-detecting process of PMSM rotor position is simulated which proves the effectiveness of this method.

Instantaneous energy balancing plays an important role in power electronics conversion. The unbalance of electromagnetic energy not only debases the system performance but also decreases the reliability and efficiency of the conversion. In this paper, instantaneous energy balancing problems in three-level neutral point clamped (NPC) converters are classified and discussed. Typical examples and their usual solutions of each kind of problems are expounded and compared. In the end of this paper, limitations and disadvantages of traditional methods are analyzed, and electromagnetic field method is summarized as the new trend to analyze electromagnetic energy transmission and exchange. The method using electromagnetic field theory is emphasized to be the better approach to solve the aforementioned energy balancing problems.

With the broad application of silicone rubber (SIR) insulator in high-altitude regions, corona degradation is one of the inevitable electrical degradation caused by electric stress due to the organic properties of SIR. Although this phenomenon is investigated at atmospheric pressure, there is little investigation at low pressures. It is urgent to systematically investigate effects of low pressure on the corona degradation for the reliable application. Experiments were carried out in a decompression chamber and the ambient pressure was reduced by a rotary pump from the atmospheric pressure to 40 kPa. The specimens were exposed to corona discharges at low pressures for different lapse time. The surface static contact angles on the insulator were measured to reveal the hydrophobicity changes. The currents during corona discharges at different low pressures were measured to confirm the corona degradation with variation of the pressures. The results obtained showed that the intensity of corona discharge increased with reducing the ambient pressure, which accelerated the process of corona degradation.

Voltage stability margin of regional network is not a fixed quantity but closely related to operation condition and operation constrains. This paper proposes an effective method to estimate the real-time voltage stability margin based on some locally synchrophasor measurements. A Radial Basis Functions (RBF) neural network is employed to estimate the regional margin. The validity of the method is illustrated by case studies on the IEEE 30-bus system.

A novel non-intrusive method for on-line power load decomposition is introduced. This method is based on the following fact, that in normal operation states of electrical appliances, steady-state currents (including fundamental current and harmonic currents) of electrical appliances have normally certain statistical regularity. In such cases, a power load current can be approximately estimated by the linear superposition of the currents components of n main types of electrical appliances, when the power load consists of n main types of electrical appliances. The subject of the power load decomposition is to calculate a group of reasonable weight coefficients by an optimization method, so that the estimation current has the maximum similarity with the real current. The experimental results indicate that this method of load decomposition not only has higher precision and better stability but also is easy to be realized on-line.

A novel maximum power point tracking (MPPT) strategy is presented in the paper. When wind speed varies, the wind turbine could obtain a big torque difference by adopting the novel strategy to achieve the aim of tracking the optimum turbine speed fleetly. The square wave permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG) is adopted in this paper for considering the characteristic of the diode rectifier-Boost circuit-voltage source inverter power transformation structure. The DC-link capacitor voltage is maintained at a constant value by ensuring the balance of the input and output energy of the both sides of the capacitor. The independent control of boost circuit and inverter is achieved. The simulation results indicates that compared with the conventional MPPT strategy, the efficiency of the turbine capturing wind energy by adopting the novel MPPT strategy is enhanced. And the independent electric control mode not only ensures the stability of generation system operation but also strengthen the flexibility and compatibility of system control.

Biodegradable polymers are increasingly expected for substitute of present insulating materials in the electrical and electronic devices. However, their electrical properties are not systematically confirmed and need further investigation. In this paper, biodegradable polyethylene (BDPE) films are employed as the specimens and high density polyethylene (HDPE) films are as the reference. The breakdown endurance of BDPE film is examined using bias DC voltage under UV-irradiation environments. The images of breakdown craters are captured through applying a monocular-video-zoom microscope. Both breakdown area and box dimension of breakdown craters are obtained by an image-pattern- identification technique. The results reveal that for both BDPE and HDPE films, the breakdown voltage, breakdown area and box dimension all decrease with the increase of UV-irradiation level. Based on comparison of the results, it shows that under UV-irradiation environment, breakdown endurance of BDPE film is better than that of HDPE film.

Dynamic security region (DSR) gives power system engineers systematic and global information about the feasible operation region. This paper is a result of an investigation into the use of DSR concept and its effective application in bulk power systems. It particularly concerns with developing a software-based tool for the transient stability monitoring in the on-line operation environment. A practical DSR solving method based on massively parallel computer clusters is described, and a new software package, named power system dynamic security region (PSDSR) is developed. Following a brief discussion about the main requirements, the paper gives a summary of the development of PSDSR from both the software architecture and the function implementation. A most distinctive character, the practical application in monitoring the cut-set power flows, with result visualization is emphasized.

This paper demonstrates a method of using a DC-DC boost conversion circuit to suppress the commutation torque ripple of a brushless DC (BLDC) motor with rectangular flux distribution. The commutation torque of a BLDC motor is depending on the commutation transient line current. To calculate the line current accurately, the phase resistance is taken into account, and the phase currents rising and falling speed are compared. Furthermore, it is proved that the line current will maintain constant if the DC voltage is lifted in the commutation period. The desired voltage is even higher than the supplied DC link voltage, if the back EMF is higher than two fifths of the input DC voltage. A super-lift Luo-converter is employed to increase the input voltage. The required waveform of the transient voltage is accomplished by changing the parameters of the power DC/DC converter based on the mathematical modeling for the proposed circuit. And the torque ripple is under control. The control stratagem for the torque ripple suppression is described in the paper and its reliability is testified by the simulation and experiment results.

In recent years, economical and environmental reasons have forced the transmission systems to be operated closer to their security limits. Power utilities world-wide have become even more concerned with various power system stability problems. In this paper, we mainly concern power flow control strategy on some system critical interfaces. A control method based on power flow tracing and generator re-dispatching is presented. It can effectively control the power flow on some critical interfaces in a relatively large range. Power flow on the interface is first traced backward to locate generators to be adjusted in the sending-end subsystem. And then, it is traced forward to determine loads to be affected. Power flow tracing is adopted again from such loads to determine their supplying generators in the receiving-end subsystem, which is then used to compensate the load fluctuation on the interface. Since power flow tracing is mainly used in the congestion management, power loss allocation, node pricing in deregulation study, the presented method can not only be used in the traditional and monopolistic environment to enhance power system stability, but also can be used to mitigate power system congestion under deregulation environment. Finally, New England 39-bus system, 57-bus system and 118 bus system are employed to verify the effectiveness of the presented method.
