Objective quality assessment of stereoscopic panoramic images becomes a challenging problem owing to the rapid growth of 360-degree contents. Different from traditional 2D image quality assessment (IQA), more complex aspects are involved in 3D omnidirectional IQA, especially unlimited field of view (FoV) and extra depth perception, which brings difficulty to evaluate the quality of experience (QoE) of 3D omnidirectional images. In this paper, we propose a multi-viewport based full-reference stereo 360 IQA model. Due to the freely changeable viewports when browsing in the head-mounted display, our proposed approach processes the image inside FoV rather than the projected one such as equirectangular projection (ERP). In addition, since overall QoE depends on both image quality and depth perception, we utilize the features estimated by the difference map between left and right views which can reflect disparity. The depth perception features along with binocular image qualities are employed to further predict the overall QoE of 3D 360 images. The experimental results on our public Stereoscopic OmnidirectionaL Image quality assessment Database (SOLID) show that the proposed method achieves a significant improvement over some well-known IQA metrics and can accurately reflect the overall QoE of perceived images.

With the increasing popularity of mobile devices, there are more and more screens with heterogeneous resolutions. In order to solve the mismatching problem of images displaying on different screens, various image retargeting techniques have been proposed. However, little effective objective quality assessment metric for image retargeting has been proposed. In this paper, we propose an objective image retargeting quality assessment method based on Hybrid Distortion Pooled Model (HDPM) considering image local similarity, content information loss and image structural distortion. The proposed HDPM method measures the retargeted image's local similarity based on matching the similar block by Scale-Invariant Features Transform (SIFT) features and computing the corresponding blocks' similarity by structural similarity (SSIM). Furthermore, the image content information loss in retargeted image, which is regarded as the SIFT feature loss, is taken into account. Besides, we also consider image's structural distortion in the proposed method, which is based on GLCM (Gray-level co-occurrence matrix). To evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed method, extensive experiments have been conducted, and the results show improved consistency between the proposed HDPM method and the corresponding subjective evaluations.

The Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over HTTP (DASH) enables bitrate adaptation through different representations of the same content. It is common to encode random access point (RAP) pictures at segment boundaries to support representation switching. As an open group of pictures (GOP) results into a temporary discontinuity of the video playback due to the inability to decode some pictures when switching representations, closed GOP prediction structures are normally used in DASH. This paper proposes two similar methods for using the open GOP prediction structure in DASH representations while a full picture rate is maintained also during representation switching. The first method is enabled with straightforward changes in the decoding of the High Efficiency Video Coding (H.265/HEVC) standard, whereas the second method utilizes the adaptive resolution change feature of the scalable (SHVC) extension of H.265/HEVC. Experiments show that the proposed methods outperform the use of closed GOPs by 5.6% on average in terms of Bjontegaard delta bitrate (BD-rate).

The directional intra prediction (DIP) modes in HEVC are capable of predicting local continuous image features. Recently, intra block copy (IBC) is proposed for screen content coding, aiming at predicting non-local recurrent image features. For natural video, we observe that recurrent features are often irregular and not aligned with blocks. Thus, we propose a combination of DIP and IBC with block partition for better intra prediction, where one block can be divided into several partitions, each of which may choose between DIP and IBC. We study an intra prediction scheme with the proposed combination, especially the rate-distortion optimization and entropy coding in the scheme. Preliminary experimental results show that the proposed combined intra prediction achieves as high as 5.8% bit-rate saving compared to HEVC anchor.

Vehicle re-identification (re-id) plays an important role in the automatic analysis of the drastically increasing urban surveillance videos. Similar to the other image retrieval problems, vehicle re-id suffers from the difficulties caused by various poses of vehicles, diversified illuminations, and complicated environments. Triplet-wise training of convolutional neural network (CNN) has been studied to address these challenges, where the CNN is adopted to automate the feature extraction from images, and the training adopts triplets of (query, positive example, negative example) to capture the relative similarity between them to learn representative features. The traditional triplet-wise training is weakly constrained and thus fails to achieve satisfactory results. We propose to improve the triplet-wise training at two aspects: first, a stronger constraint namely classification-oriented loss is augmented with the original triplet loss; second, a new triplet sampling method based on pairwise images is designed. Our experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed methods that achieve superior performance than the state-of-the-arts on two vehicle re-id datasets, which are derived from real-world urban surveillance videos.

In this paper, we propose a novel deep architecture with multiple classifiers for continuous sign language recognition. Representing the sign video with a 3D convolutional residual network and a bidirectional LSTM, we formulate continuous sign language recognition as a grammatical-rule-based classification problem. We first split a text sentence of sign language into isolated words and n-grams, where an n-gram is a sequence of consecutive n words in a sentence. Then, we propose a word-independent classifiers (WIC) module and an n-gram classifier (NGC) module to identify the words and n-grams in a sentence, respectively. A greedy decoding algorithm is employed to integrate words and n-grams into the sentence based on the confidence scores provided by both modules. Our method is evaluated on a Chinese continuous sign language recognition benchmark, and the experimental results demonstrate its effectiveness and superiority.

Compressed sensing (CS) has recently attracted much interest for its ability to recovery a sparse signal with very limited number of samples. In this paper, we adapt this idea and present a framework of high-resolution ISAR imaging based on antenna array. During the framework, linear antenna array is analyzed and compared with different conventional algorithms. Numerical simulation results confirmed the validity of the proposed algorithm. © 2011 IEEE.

Multichannel synthetic aperture radar (SAR) is a significant breakthrough to the inherent limitation between high-resolution and wide-swath (HRWS) faced with conventional SAR. Error estimation and unambiguous reconstruction are two crucial techniques for obtaining high-quality imagery. This paper demonstrates the experimental results of the two techniques for Chinese first dualchannel spaceborne SAR imaging. The model of Chinese Gaofen-3 dual-channel mode is established and the mechanism of channel mismatches is first discussed. Particularly, we propose a digital beamforming (DBF) process composed of the subspace-based error estimation algorithm and the reconstruction algorithm before imaging. The results exhibit the effective suppression of azimuth ambiguities with the proposed DBF process, and indicate the feasibility of this technique for future HRWS SAR systems. © Authors 2017.

Content-aware image retargeting has attracted substantial research interests in the related research community. However, so far there is still no method can adequately preserve important image contents and structure well without introducing conspicuous visible deformation in a relatively short period of time. To address this problem, we propose a Fast Genetic Multi-operator (FGM) method which integrates multiple retargeting operators. To improve the efficiency, FGM method utilizes Genetic Algorithms (GAs) to reach the optimal operator ratio, which adopts saliency and Gray-Level Co-occurrence Matrix (GLCM) as its energy function. FGM method not only can well preserve salient contents and structure, but also can greatly reduce the computational complexity. Experimental results demonstrated that our method outperforms state-of-art image retargeting methods.

Light field image quality assessment (LF-IQA) plays a significant role due to its guidance to Light Field (LF) contents acquisition, processing and application. The LF can be represented as 4-D signal, and its quality depends on both angular consistency and spatial quality. However, few existing LF-IQA methods concentrate on effects caused by angular inconsistency. Especially, no-reference methods lack effective utilization of 2D angular information. In this paper, we focus on measuring the 2-D angular consistency for LF-IQA. The Micro-Lens Image (MLI) refers to the angular domain of the LF image, which can simultaneously record the angular information in both horizontal and vertical directions. Since the MLI contains 2D angular information, we propose a No-Reference Light Field image Quality assessment model based on MLI (LF-QMLI). Specifically, we first utilize Global Entropy Distribution (GED) and Uniform Local Binary Pattern descriptor (ULBP) to extract features from the MLI, and then pool them together to measure angular consistency. In addition, the information entropy of SubAperture Image (SAI) is adopted to measure spatial quality. Extensive experimental results show that LF-QMLI achieves the state-of-the-art performance.
