Article dgfnet: Dual gate fusion network for land cover classification in very high-resolution images

Deep convolutional neural networks (DCNNs) have been used to achieve state-of-the-art performance on land cover classification thanks to their outstanding nonlinear feature extraction abil-ity. DCNNs are usually designed as an encoder–decoder architecture for the land cover classification in very high-resolution (VHR) remote sensing images. The encoder captures semantic representation by stacking convolution layers and shrinking image spatial resolution, while the decoder restores the spatial information by an upsampling operation and combines it with different level features through a summation or skip connection. However, there is still a semantic gap between different-level features;a simple summation or skip connection will reduce the performance of land-cover classification. To overcome this problem, we propose a novel end-to-end network named Dual Gate Fusion Network (DGFNet) to restrain the impact of the semantic gap. In detail, the key of DGFNet consists of two main components: Feature Enhancement Module (FEM) and Dual Gate Fusion Module (DGFM). Firstly, the FEM combines local information with global contents and strengthens the feature representation in the encoder. Secondly, the DGFM is proposed to reduce the semantic gap between different level features, effectively fusing low-level spatial information and high-level semantic information in the decoder. Extensive experiments conducted on the LandCover dataset and the ISPRS Potsdam dataset proved the effectiveness of the proposed network. The DGFNet achieves state-of-art performance 88.87% MIoU on the LandCover dataset and 72.25% MIoU on the ISPRS Potsdam dataset. © 2021 by the authors. Licensee MDPI, Basel, Switzerland.

A new packet-selection based transmission scheme is proposed on a dual-hop link with buffer aided amplify-and-forward relay, where the relay with a buffer can record the channel information of source-relay hop and store the received packets. In order to satisfy the constraint of equivalent end-to-end SNR, the relay may pick up a packet in the buffer to transmit, with consideration of the channel statuses of both the source-relay hop and the relay-destination hop. Therefore, by adjusting the packet transmission order in the relay, the outage probability can be decreased in the proposed transmission scheme. Both theoretical analyses and simulation results show that the proposed scheme outperforms traditional ones by a significant margin of 2-4 dB gain in terms of outage probability.

Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) tomography (TomoSAR) has attracted remarkable interest for its ability in achieving threedimensional reconstruction along the elevation direction from multiple observations. In recent years, compressed sensing (CS) technique has been introduced into TomoSAR considering for its super-resolution ability with limited samples. Whereas, the CS-based methods suffer from several drawbacks, including weak noise resistance, high computational complexity and complex parameter fine-tuning. Among the different CS algorithms, iterative soft-thresholding algorithm (ISTA) is widely used as a robust reconstruction approach, however, the parameters in the ISTA are manually chosen, which usually requires a time-consuming fine-tuning process to achieve the best performance. Aiming at efficient TomoSAR imaging, a novel sparse unfolding network named analytic learned ISTA (ALISTA) is proposed towards the TomoSAR imaging problem in this paper, and the key parameters of ISTA are learned from training data via deep learning to avoid complex parameter fine-tuning and significantly relieves the training burden. In addition, experiments verify that it is feasible to use traditional CS algorithms as training labels, which provides a tangible supervised training method to achieve better 3D reconstruction performance even in the absence of labeled data in real applications.

The cooperative tracking problem for a class of nonlinear affine systems are addressed. Actuator faults and external disturbance/model uncertainty are allowed such that we aim to design distributed controllers that can tolerate them while realize cooperative tracking. A general setup is considered, that is, actuator faults can take such forms as actuator degradation and total failure. Then, to guarantee the feasibility of fault-tolerant control, we assume that the actuator has sufficiently many healthy components which enables us to apply integral sliding mode control (ISMC) to develop the distributed controllers that can fulfill the control target and the external disturbance can simultaneously be successfully rejected. We also provide the simulation results to verify the validity of our theoretical findings.

Stereo matching in remote sensing has recently garnered increased attention, primarily focusing on supervised learning. However, datasets with ground truth generated by expensive airbone Lidar exhibit limited quantity and diversity, constraining the effectiveness of supervised networks. In contrast, unsupervised learning methods can leverage the increasing availability of very-high-resolution (VHR) remote sensing images, offering considerable potential in the realm of stereo matching. Motivated by this intuition, we propose a novel unsupervised stereo matching network for VHR remote sensing images. A light-weight module to bridge confidence with predicted error is introduced to refine the core model. Robust unsupervised losses are formulated to enhance network convergence. The experimental results on US3D and WHU-Stereo datasets demonstrate that the proposed network achieves superior accuracy compared to other unsupervised networks and exhibits better generalization capabilities than supervised models. —The explosive increase and ubiquitous accessibility of visual data on the Web have led to the prosperity of research activity in image search or retrieval. With the ignorance of visual content as a ranking clue, methods with text search techniques for visual retrieval may suffer inconsistency between the text words and visual content. Content-based image retrieval (CBIR), which makes use of the representation of visual content to identify relevant images, has attracted sustained attention in recent two decades. Such a problem is challenging due to the intention gap and the semantic gap problems. Numerous techniques have been developed for content-based image retrieval in the last decade. The purpose of this paper is to categorize and evaluate those algorithms proposed during the period of 2003 to 2016. We conclude with several promising directions for future research. Supraglacial lake plays an important role in ice sheet dynamics, mass balance and sea level rise. Therefore, it is of great importance to extract supraglacial lake and obtain its spatial-temporal distribution or change. This study provides an automatic extraction model for supraglacial lake, using Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) imagery based on deep learning. First, select 19580 Sentinel-1 SAR imagery patches in eight typical areas for manual labeling. Second, the GPU-based U-Net model is used to implement the training of the supraglacial lake, and the results are evaluated in different sites. Finally, the training model is used to perform the supraglacial lake extraction. In addition, this article also introduces ArcticDEM to remove shadow confusion in the margin of the ice sheet. The global-local threshold segmentation method is used to extract the supraglacial lake on the Sentinel-2 MSI imagery, which is a comparative analysis and information supplement for the extracted results in this paper. The results show that: (1) The U-Net network selected in this paper is suitable for processing small sample size SAR data and multi-modal feature extraction. The GPU parallel processing method can achieve rapid extraction of massive data and reduce time cost. (2) The Dice coefficient of the training model reaches 0.98, which can be used for effective extraction of supraglacial lake. (3) Compared with the results of optical image extraction, the algorithm proposed in this paper can identify lakes in areas covered by snow or thin ice, which truly reflects the supraglacial lake temporal and spatial distribution characteristics.

The PolSAR system must be calibrated before obtain effective polarimetric information. The airplane attitude is unstable during the PolSAR measurement, which will impact the polarimetric calibration precision. This paper improved the polarimetric calibration method proposed by Whitt considering the impact of airplane attitude. The improved method is proved by polarimetric experiment using a PolSAR system developed by iecas (Institute of electronics, Chinese Academy of Sciences).

In this paper, we focus on the use of multi-modal data to achieve a semantic segmentation of aerial imagery. Thereby, the multi-modal data is composed of a true orthophoto, the Digital Surface Model (DSM) and further representations derived from these. Taking data of different modalities separately and in combination as input to a Residual Shuffling Convolutional Neural Network (RSCNN), we analyze their value for the classification task given with a benchmark dataset. The derived results reveal an improvement if different types of geometric features extracted from the DSM are used in addition to the true orthophoto.

An attention-based word-level interaction model: Relation detection for knowledge base question answering

Relation detection plays a crucial role in Knowledge Base Question Answering (KBQA) because of the high variance of relation expression in the question. Traditional deep learning methods follow an encoding-comparing paradigm, where the question and the candidate relation are represented as vectors to compare their semantic similarity. Max- or average- pooling operation, which compresses the sequence of words into fixed-dimensional vectors, becomes the bottleneck of information. In this paper, we propose to learn attention-based word-level interactions between questions and relations to alleviate the bottleneck issue. Similar to the traditional models, the question and relation are firstly represented as sequences of vectors. Then, instead of merging the sequence into a single vector with pooling operation, soft alignments between words from the question and the relation are learned. The aligned words are subsequently compared with the convolutional neural network (CNN) and the comparison results are merged finally. Through performing the comparison on low-level representations, the attention-based word-level interaction model (ABWIM) relieves the information loss issue caused by merging the sequence into a fixed-dimensional vector before the comparison. The experimental results of relation detection on both SimpleQuestions and WebQuestions datasets show that ABWIM achieves state-of-the-art accuracy, demonstrating its effectiveness.
