A novel TomoSAR imaging method with few observations based on nested array

Synthetic aperture radar tomography (TomoSAR) baseline optimization technique is capable of reducing system complexity and improving the temporal coherence of data, which has become an important research in the field of TomoSAR. In this paper, we propose a nested TomoSAR technique, which introduces the nested array into TomoSAR as the baseline configuration. This technique obtains uniform and continuous difference co-array through nested array to increase the degrees of freedom (DoF) of the system and expands the virtual aperture along the elevation direction. In order to make full use of the difference co-array, covariance matrix of the echo needs to be obtained. Therefore, we propose a TomoSAR sparse reconstruction algorithm based on nested array, which uses adaptive covariance matrix estimation to improve the estimation performance in complex scenes. We demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method through simulated and real data experiments. Compared with traditional TomoSAR and coprime TomoSAR, the imaging results of our proposed method have a better anti-noise performance and retain more image information. Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) tomography (TomoSAR) enables the reconstruction and three-dimensional (3D) localization of targets based on multiple two-dimensional (2D) observations of the same scene. The resolving along the elevation direction can be treated as a line spectrum estimation problem. However, traditional super-resolution spectrum estimation algorithms require multiple snapshots and uncorrelated targets. Meanwhile, as the most popular TomoSAR imaging method in modern years, compressed sensing (CS) based methods suffer from the gridding mismatch effect which markedly degrades the imaging performance. As a gridless CS approach, atomic norm minimization can avoid the gridding effect but requires enormous computing resources. Addressing the above issues, this paper proposes an improved fast ANM algorithm to TomoSAR elevation focusing by introducing the IVDST-ANM algorithm, which reduces the huge computational complexity of the conventional time-consuming semi-positive definite programming (SDP) by the iterative Vandermonde decomposition and shrinkage-thresholding (IVDST) approach, and retains the benefits of ANM in terms of gridless imaging and single snapshot recovery. We conducted experiments using simulated data to evaluate the performance of the proposed method, and reconstruction results of an urban area from the SARMV3D-Imaging 1.0 dataset are also presented. Compressed sensing technique is widely used in the field of multiple input multiple output (MIMO) radar imaging to suppress sidelobes and noise, bringing better imaging performance. However, many constraints are introduced to the sparse reconstruction model, current sparse microwave imaging model is based on several assumptions, such as far field assumption, which might not hold in some circumstances. In this paper, a novel two-dimensional sparse reconstruction method based on approximated observation is proposed. First, we obtain the measurement matrix by the inverse back-projection operator, and construct a two-dimensional sparse reconstruction model. Then, we adopt the minimax concave constraint as the regularization term and use the iterative soft threshold algorithm (ISTA) for sparse reconstruction. The method retains the advantages of the BP algorithm and the sparse reconstruction algorithm at the same time, and the distance between the target and the antenna array is not constrained by image reconstruction performance of the sparse reconstruction algorithm. Simulations and experiments demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) tomography (TomoSAR) retrieves three-dimensional (3-D) information from multiple SAR images, effectively addresses the layover problem, and has become pivotal in urban mapping. Unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) has gained popularity as a TomoSAR platform, offering distinct advantages such as the ability to achieve 3-D imaging in a single flight, cost-effectiveness, rapid deployment, and flexible trajectory planning. The evolution of compressed sensing (CS) has led to the widespread adoption of sparse reconstruction techniques in TomoSAR signal processing, with a focus on 1 norm regularization and other grid-based CS methods. However, the discretization of illuminated scene along elevation introduces modeling errors, resulting in reduced reconstruction accuracy, known as the "off-grid" effect. Recent advancements have introduced gridless CS algorithms to mitigate this issue. This paper presents an innovative gridless 3-D imaging framework tailored for UAV-borne TomoSAR. Capitalizing on the pulse repetition frequency (PRF) redundancy inherent in slow UAV platforms, a multiple measurement vectors (MMV) model is constructed to enhance noise immunity without compromising azimuth-range resolution. Given the sparsely placed array elements due to mounting platform constraints, an atomic norm soft thresholding algorithm is proposed for partially observed MMV, offering gridless reconstruction capability and super-resolution. An efficient alternative optimization algorithm is also employed to enhance computational efficiency. Validation of the proposed framework is achieved through computer simulations and flight experiments, affirming its efficacy in UAV-borne TomoSAR applications. Copyright © 2024, The Authors. —Existing generalization theories analyze the generalization performance mainly based on the model complexity and training process. The ignorance of the task properties, which results from the widely used IID assumption, makes these theories fail to interpret many generalization phenomena or guide practical learning tasks. In this paper, we propose a new Independent and Task-Identically Distributed (ITID) assumption, to consider the task properties into the data generating process. The derived generalization bound based on the ITID assumption identifies the significance of hypothesis invariance in guaranteeing generalization performance. Based on the new bound, we introduce a practical invariance enhancement algorithm from the perspective of modifying data distributions. Finally, we verify the algorithm and theorems in the context of image classification task on both toy and real-world datasets. The experimental results demonstrate the reasonableness of the ITID assumption and the effectiveness of new generalization theory in improving practical generalization performance. Person re-identification is a crucial task of identifying pedestrians of interest across multiple surveillance camera views. For person re-identification, a pedestrian is usually represented with features extracted from a rectangular image region that inevitably contains the scene background, which incurs ambiguity to distinguish different pedestrians and degrades the accuracy. Thus, we propose an end-to-end foreground-aware network to discriminate against the foreground from the background by learning a soft mask for person re-identification. In our method, in addition to the pedestrian ID as supervision for the foreground, we introduce the camera ID of each pedestrian image for background modeling. The foreground branch and the background branch are optimized collaboratively. By presenting a target attention loss, the pedestrian features extracted from the foreground branch become more insensitive to backgrounds, which greatly reduces the negative impact of changing backgrounds on pedestrian matching across different camera views. Notably, in contrast to existing methods, our approach does not require an additional dataset to train a human landmark detector or a segmentation model for locating the background regions. The experimental results conducted on three challenging datasets, i.e., Market-1501, DukeMTMC-reID, and MSMT17, demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach. Copyright © 2019, The Authors. The classification of large-scale high-resolution SAR land cover images acquired by satellites is a challenging task, facing several difficulties such as semantic annotation with expertise, changing data characteristics due to varying imaging parameters or regional target area differences, and complex scattering mechanisms being different from optical imaging. Given a large-scale SAR land cover dataset collected from TerraSAR-X images with a hierarchical three-level annotation of 150 categories and comprising more than 100,000 patches, three main challenges in automatically interpreting SAR images of highly imbalanced classes, geographic diversity, and label noise are addressed. In this letter, a deep transfer learning method is proposed based on a similarly annotated optical land cover dataset (NWPU-RESISC45). Besides, a top-2 smooth loss function with cost-sensitive parameters was introduced to tackle the label noise and imbalanced classes’ problems. The proposed method shows high efficiency in transferring information from a similarly annotated remote sensing dataset, a robust performance on highly imbalanced classes, and is alleviating the over-fitting problem caused by label noise. What’s more, the learned deep model has a good generalization for other SAR-specific tasks, such as MSTAR target recognition with a state-of-the-art classification accuracy of 99.46%. © 2019, CC BY.

In this paper, the problem of rudder-roll damping control for a class of cruise keeping ships subject to both actuator fault and state saturation is investigated. A manoeuvring and rudder control model of marine vessels is firstly reviewed based on the existing literature. Actuator faults which including partial loss of rudder effectiveness and actuator-bias faults are considered in the model. Then a switching control strategy is developed to compensate for the actuator faults and to guarantee the stability of the rudder-roll damping control system. Moreover, some relationship regarding state saturation bounds, actuator fault limits and control parameters are analyzed in this paper. Finally, simulation results are given to illustrate the proposed procedures and their effectiveness.

Convolutional neural network-based block up-sampling for intra frame coding

—Inspired by the recent advances of image super-resolution using convolutional neural network (CNN), we propose a CNN-based block up-sampling scheme for intra frame coding. A block can be down-sampled before being compressed by normal intra coding, and then up-sampled to its original resolution. Different from previous studies on down/up-sampling-based coding, the up-sampling methods in our scheme have been designed by training CNN instead of hand-crafted. We explore a new CNN structure for up-sampling, which features deconvolution of feature maps, multi-scale fusion, and residue learning, making the network both compact and efficient. We also design different networks for the up-sampling of luma and chroma components, respectively, where the chroma up-sampling CNN utilizes the luma information to boost its performance. In addition, we design a two-stage up-sampling process, the first stage being within the block-by-block coding loop, and the second stage being performed on the entire frame, so as to refine block boundaries. We also empirically study how to set the coding parameters of down-sampled blocks for pursuing the frame-level rate-distortion optimization. Our proposed scheme is implemented into the High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) reference software, and a comprehensive set of experiments have been performed to evaluate our methods. Experimental results show that our scheme achieves significant bits saving compared with HEVC anchor especially at low bit rates, leading to on average 5.5% BD-rate reduction on common test sequences and on average 9.0% BD-rate reduction on ultra high definition (UHD) test sequences.
