Building information modeling (BIM) is regarded as a feasible and efficient tool to realize sustainable construction. A lot of research has been conducted using BIM to evaluate and improve environmental, economic, and social performance of construction. Yet there is still lacking in a review which analyzes the application of BIM in sustainable construction (ABSC). This study utilized a systematic literature searching-selection-classifying method to obtain papers of ABSC research from five databases. To investigate who contributes most in ABSC field, the papers were distributed according to the countries/regions, journals, and research centers. To reveal the research emphasis and research trend in ABSC field, the emphasis of research level, project phase, sustainable dimension, and research topic was analyzed. Based on the analysis results, four critical gaps of ABSC research have been identified, including a lack of an integrated BIM tool for all three sustainable dimensions, unexplored potential of BIM in infrastructure, a lack of sustainable BIM application for maintenance and operation management, and a lack of sustainable BIM application at organizational level. This study will be valuable for researchers to gain an in-depth understanding of research trend and knowledge gaps in ABSC research, and future studies could be conducted to fill the gaps found in this review. © 2018 American Society of Civil Engineers.

The last decades have witness the rapid urbanization in China, which cause the growing demand for affordable housing. Meanwhile, many social and environmental problems arise due to the large-scale rural-urban migration, which attract attention of the government and the public. Comparing with traditional one-site construction, prefabricated construction is more environmentally friendly and labor-saving, exactly meeting the current demand in China. To promote the application of prefabricated construction in the field of affordable housing construction and the sustainable degree of affordable housing construction, this paper first analyzes the relevance and similar characters between prefabricated buildings and affordable housing construction. We further states that prefabricated buildings play a facilitative role in the construction of affordable housing and how affordable housing construction feeds back prefabricated buildings. On this basis, we analyze how to realize the sustainability of affordable housing and put forward a conceptual framework of sustainable affordable housing. © 2018 American Society of Civil Engineers.

Industrialization of the construction industry is the direction of change in the mode of building production, so it is imminent to promote the development of industrialization of the construction industry in China. The Chinese government put forward different policies for the development of industrialization of the construction industry in different stages of industrialization of the construction industry. In this review, we describe current researches on the policy of promoting the industrialization of the construction industry in China, discuss the advantages and disadvantages of nine kinds of research methods, and put forward some policy recommendations to promote the industrialization of buildings. In addition, we provide a framework for policy study on industrialization of the construction industry using policy bibliography. © 2018 American Society of Civil Engineers.

Improvement of sludge dewaterability with modified cinder via affecting EPS

The relationship between the improvement of sludge dewaterability and variation of organic matters has been studied in the process of sludge pre-conditioning with modified cinder, especially for extracellular polymeric substances （EPS） in the sludge. During the conditioning process, the decreases of total organic carbon （TOC） and soluble chemical oxygen demand （SCOD） were obviously in the supernatant especially for the acid modified cinder （ACMC）, which could be attributed to the processes of adsorption and sweeping. The reduction of polysaccharide and protein in supernatant indicated that ACMC might adsorb EPS so that the tightly bound EPS （TB-EPS） decreased in sludge. In the case of ACMC addition with 24 g·L^-1, SRF of the sludge decreased from 7.85 × 10^12 m·kg^-1 to 2.06× 10^12 m·kg^-1, and the filter cake moisture decreased from 85% to 60%. The reconstruction of ＂floc mass＂ was confirmed as the main sludge conditioning mechanism. ACMC promoted the dewatering performance through the charge neutralization and adsorption bridging with the negative EPS, and provided firm and dense structure for sludge floc as skeleton builder. The passages for water quick transmitting were built to avoid collapsing during the high-pressure process.

A sophisticated simulation for the fracture behavior of concrete material using XFEM

The development of a powerful numerical model to simulate the fracture behavior of concrete material has long been one of the dominant research areas in earthquake engineering. A reliable model should be able to adequately represent the discontinuous characteristics of cracks and simulate various failure behaviors under complicated loading conditions. In this paper, a numerical formulation, which incorporates a sophisticated rigid-plastic interface constitutive model coupling cohesion softening, contact, friction and shear dilatation into the XFEM, is proposed to describe various crack behaviors of concrete material. An effective numerical integration scheme for accurately assembling the contribution to the weak form on both sides of the discontinuity is introduced. The effectiveness of the proposed method has been assessed by simulating several well-known experimental tests. It is concluded that the numerical method can successfully capture the crack paths and accurately predict the fracture behavior of concrete structures. The influence ofmode-Ⅱ parameters on the mixed-mode fracture behavior is further investigated to better determine these parameters.

Although concrete is the world's most widely used manufactured material, basic questions persist regarding the nature of its binding phase, namely, the calcium-silicate-hydrate (C-S-H) gel. Here, based on reactive molecular dynamics simulations, we address the following fundamental question: Is the chemical composition of C-S-H controlled by the kinetics or thermodynamics of its precipitation? As a major outcome of this study, we demonstrate that the average stoichiometry of the C-S-H gel forming upon the hydration of ordinary portland cement (i.e., Ca/Si = 1.75) is determined by the composition of the C-S-H phase presenting the fastest precipitation kinetics, rather than the highest thermodynamic stability.

Safety uncertainties widely exist in every phase of construction projects, especially during the on-site building stage. To identify different kinds of on-site safety uncertainties, a four-level analytic hierarchy process (AHP) model is proposed based on China's current construction industry standards. Then analyze the influence and frequency of level-4th (L4) factors, synthesized cloud model (SCM) is applied to sampling calculation program, with which both randomness and fuzziness can be jointly considered. Finally, a multi-factor assessment method (MAM) under fuzzy sets theory is used to assess level-3rd (L3), level-2nd (L2), and level-1st (L1) factors of on-site safety system. Such methodology not only avoids the limitation of filling in huge numbers of written documents, but also can realize the dynamic adjustment of system factors, and may significantly decrease the difficulty of on-site safety management and safety inspection. In addition, practical advices are put forward to avoid some limitations of standard. © 2018 American Society of Civil Engineers.

Concrete is easily to crack due to its low tensile strength. Once harmful substances ingress through cracks, the service life of concrete will be endangered. The self-healing agent with a high healing efficiency and multiple autonomous is prepared based on pyrogallol and polyethylenimine. This self-healing agent is in liquid state, when the solution is exposed to air, there will be a film formed at the liquid/air interface. This film exhibited well regenerative properties which can be used to seal the cracks of concrete to reduce the risk of ingress of aggressive substances. In this paper, the ratio of the two components of the self-healing agent was investigated to achieve an optimization of strength and generation rate of this film. Then cement mortar specimens of ?100×50 mm are immersed in the self-healing agent under a vacuum environment to let the pores fill with self-healing agent. Thereafter, the discs are subjected to gas permeability test to exam the effects of self-healing agent on the permeability of cement mortar before and after compressive loadings. Results showed that this material can effectively reduce the gas permeability coefficient of cement mortar with micro cracks. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) results also confirmed the crack barrier effect of this self-healing agent. Through several loading cycles, this self-healing agent also retained a certain self-healing effect in cement matrix, indicating that this self-healing agent appears to be a promising approach to increase concrete durability.

Comprehensive safety assessment for CFST tied arch bridge subjected to explosion

Accidental vehicle explosion and car bomb blast causes certain damage to bridge structure, while studies on safety assessment for bridge structures subjected to blast are limited, especially for the concrete filled steel tube(CFST) tied arch bridge(tied arch bridge in short). This study developed a safety assessment index system for CFST tied arch bridge under explosion by the modified analytic hierarchy process(AHP) model based on catastrophe theory. The Jinta bridge was used as a demonstration case for this study and the dynamic responses of tied arch bridge under explosion loading was simulated by numerical simulations. The results show that the proposed system can reflects the safety condition of the tied arch bridge after explosion. The evaluation system presented in this study can serve as an approach for the safety assessment of tied arch bridge and provide the basis for engineering decision-making of bridge structures after explosion accident.

It has become a mainstream to use physical models to quantify expected energy savings from alternative retrofit methods and technologies. However, they are not suitable for predicting energy use of buildings when detailed and specified input parameters are unavailable. The overall purpose of the research is to support the stakeholders in taking decisions on refurbishments options when not all of physical information is available, in order to achieve the Swedish Energy Agency's measurements of near-zero energy buildings. The research will transfer big data from Swedish Energy Performance Certificates for building retrofitting. A Support Vector Machines and Fuzzy C-means clustering (SVM-FCM) integrated machine learning algorithm is used directly to extract the case-specific knowledge from EPC big data regarding building characteristics and energy saving of retrofit measures. It enables to prioritize retrofit measures and compute their expected energy savings for buildings. This proposed data driven method is an attempt of taking advantage of big data for practical building retrofit selection.
