Earthquakes pose significant perils to the built environment in urban *** avert the calamitous aftermath of earthquakes,it is imperative to construct seismic resilient *** to the intricacy of the concept of urban seismic resilience(USR),its assessment is a large-scale system engineering *** assessment of USR should be based on the notion of urban seismic capacity(USC)assessment,which includes casualties,economic loss,and recovery time as *** loss is also included in the assessment of USR in addition to these *** assessment indicator system comprising five dimensions(building and lifeline infrastructure,environment,society,economy,and institution)and 20 indicators has been devised to quantify *** analytical hierarchy process(AHP)is utilized to compute the weights of the criteria,dimensions,and indicators in the urban seismic resilience assessment(USRA)indicator *** the necessary data for a city are obtainable,the seismic resilience of that city can be assessed using this *** illustrate the proposed methodology,a moderate-sized city in China was selected as a case *** assessment results indicate a high level of USR,suggesting that the city possesses strong capabilities to withstand and recover from potential future earthquakes.

This study investigates using low-temperature microwave radiation to prepare ultra-high-performance concrete (UHPC), aiming to contribute to sustainable and green concrete technology. Immediate microwave curing (IMC) accelerates the early hardening process, but rapid moisture loss challenges prolonged hydration and strength development. The research combines strength tests, X-ray diffraction, differential thermal analysis and thermogravimetric analysis, scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and COMSOL simulations to understand these mechanisms. The findings reveal that microwaves' unique magnetic effects activate interactions between ions, leading to the formation of atypical phases such as hydrotalcite-like phase (HTlp), calcium silicide (CaSi2), and thaumasite-like phase (TSAlp). Unlike delayed microwave curing (DMC), IMC produces crystalline phases such as ettringite, HTlp, TSAlp, and gypsum, while calcium hydroxide (CH)—commonly observed in Portland cement hydration—is absent, reflecting distinct hydration pathways. These results suggest that IMC alters the hydration process and microstructure of UHPC. Curing regimes must address moisture retention to ensure sufficient hydration for improved mechanical and microstructural properties to enhance its performance. This study highlights the potential of IMC as a rapid curing method while emphasizing the need for strategies to mitigate its limitations. © The Author(s) 2025.

Variability of mechanical properties of geopolymer recycled aggregate concrete: Experimental and numerical study

Despite the extensive research available on the mechanical properties of geopolymer recycled aggregate concrete (GRAC), its variability has received insufficient attention, potentially posing significant risks to the safety of GRAC components in practical applications. To further investigate the influence of specimen widths, height-to-width ratios, and RCA substitution rates on the mechanical performance variability of GRAC, GRAC specimens were fabricated for the quasi-static compressive test and the corresponding numerical simulations were conducted. First, the GRAC specimens with four different specimen widths (70, 100, 150, and 200 mm) and five different RCA substitution rates (0 %, 30 %, 50 %, 70 %, and 100 %) were fabricated for the quasi-static compressive test. Subsequently, a non-homogeneous meso-scale numerical model, accounting for the correlation among compressive strength, elastic modulus, and peak strain using the third-moment normal transformation (TMNT) method, was proposed and validated by the test data. The experimental and numerical results demonstrated that, compared to normal and log-normal distribution models, the Weibull distribution model could more accurately describe the compressive strength distribution of GRAC with a smaller prediction error. Furthermore, it was observed that compressive strength variability of GRAC decreased with an increase in specimen width and height-to-width ratio, while initially increasing and then decreasing with an increase in RCA substitution rate. In addition, based on the experimental and numerical results, the compressive strength prediction formula for GRAC at any specified reliability was proposed, accounting for specimen width, height-to-width ratio, and RCA substitution rate. It offered a more accurate prediction of the compressive strength of GRAC with different specimen widths, height-to-width ratios, and RCA substitution rates at any given reliability, thereby facilitating a more rational design of GRAC

A two-dimensional coupled energy-mass transfer model for simulating rain-on-snow load dynamics on roofs

Climate changes have led to an increase in the frequency and severity of rain-on-snow (ROS) events, risking structural safety with increasing roof snow loads. These events involve melting, freezing, and compaction induced by water infiltration in roof snowpacks. Existing models assume snow as a homogeneous medium with uniform ROS load distribution while ignoring critical phenomena like phase changes, heterogeneity, and evolution of snowpack's properties that alter water retention in snow. Although snow load is adjusted based on slope and roof geometry, these adjustments are not considered for ROS surcharge load. A two-dimensional coupled energy-mass (EM) transfer model using the Multi-point Flux Approximation method (MPFA) is employed to simulate ROS load on sloped roofs along with heat exchange, melting, refreezing, and compaction effects. Compared to simplified mass transfer models, the EM transfer model exhibits superior predictive capabilities when evaluated against experimental results. Although melting and compaction significantly increased the density, reducing porosity and permeability, the melted water accelerated saturation at the bottom boundary, enabling quicker outflow conditions. A non-uniform triangular water retention pattern at the lower roof edge was observed in both models, suggesting that heterogeneity has minimal impact on the water retention profile. Under the studied ROS load conditions, the ROS load at the roof edge is 1.6 times the overall ROS load due to non-uniform water retention. The study highlights the inadequacy of existing design code as the design ROS load is inapplicable to the studied ROS condition, despite localized loads being close to design ROS load (0.38 kN/m2). © 2025

Axial mechanical and environmental properties of CFRP-confined coal gangue sand concrete

To improve the mechanical properties of coal gangue sand (GS) concrete, carbon fiber reinforced plastics (CFRP) was used to confine the concrete. In this paper, the effects of the coal gangue sand replacement rates (rGS), core concrete strength grade, and the number of CFRP layers (p) on the axial compressive mechanical properties of CFRP-confined coal gangue sand (CCGS) concrete were investigated experimentally. The experimental results showed that rGS had a small impact on the failure mode of the CCGS concrete, which was the explosive failure. The ultimate bearing capacity (Nu, e) of the CCGS concrete decreased (maximum is 8.4 %) and increased (maximum is 134.1 %) respectively, as the rGS and p increased. With the increase of the rGS, the peak longitudinal strain of the CCGS concrete increases. The more the number of the CFRP layers, the better the lateral confined effect on the CCGS concrete. The rGS has no significant effect on the circumferential strain efficiency coefficient, which is approximately 0.67. The highest utilization efficiency of the CFRP is 2 layers. Through finite element analysis, CFRP contributes the most to the ultimate bearing capacity of the CCGS concrete, increasing by 21.9 %, while GFRP contributes the least by 10.5 %. Increasing the cross-sectional dimensions will increase the Nu, e, but will not enhance the axial compressive strength of the confined core GS concrete. The design methods of the ultimate bearing capacity and constitutive model of the CCGS concrete were proposed and validated. A full-range load prediction analysis showed that increasing rGS can improve the confinement effect of the CCGS concrete. Finally, through carbon emission calculation analysis, it was recommended to increase the number of CFRP layers while ensuring the large-scale consumption of coal gangue from the perspective of the social and economic benefits. © 2025 Elsevier Ltd

A novel porous shock absorption layer is put forward in this study, and the shock absorption performance of the porous shock absorption layer is evaluated based on three-dimensional pseudo-static analysis. The modified reaction acceleration method is adopted and validated in the three-dimensional model. Seven ground motions are selected and the peak ground acceleration is adjusted to 0.2 g, 0.4 g and 0.6 g. The impact of the void ratio and thickness of the porous shock absorption layer is studied, while the surrounding rock grade and tunnel depth are also investigated. The numerical results show that the porous shock absorption layer has good shock absorption performance and can effectively reduce the maximum internal force of the secondary lining, but it cannot reduce the maximum horizontal relative displacement of the secondary lining. The circumferential rubber strip in the porous shock absorption layer will reduce shock absorption performance. The results of parameter analysis indicate that the shock absorption performance of the porous shock absorption layer increases with the increase of the void ratio and thickness, and it has good shock absorption performance under different surrounding rock grades and tunnel depths.

dynamic shear responses of RC circular columns strengthened with recycled FRPs

Increasingly heavy urban traffic exacerbates vehicle impacts on reinforced concrete (RC) bridge columns, possibly leading to shear failure and structural collapse. To enhance the dynamic shear resistance of these columns, fiber reinforced polymers (FRPs) made from recycled polyethylene terephthalate (PET) plastic bottles were used for external strengthening. PET FRPs offer an eco-friendly alternative by repurposing plastic waste, reducing pollution, and promoting circular economy. This study focused on the dynamic shear responses of RC columns strengthened with PET FRPs. The influences of FRP types and number of FRP layers were experimentally revealed in terms of the failure modes, impact force, reaction force, shear force and impact force-displacement relationship. It was found that significant shear damage occurred in RC columns under horizontal impact loads, with carbon FRPs (CFRPs) strengthening unable to alter the failure mode. Nevertheless, the use of PET FRPs transformed the failure mode to a flexural-shear mode, significantly reducing the impact duration, maximum and residual displacements, and energy dissipation. Moreover, a finite element model was validated to describe the impact resistance of PET FRP-strengthened RC columns, as supported by experimental data. A parametric study further investigated the effects of impact velocity, impact mass, number of FRP layers, and reinforcement ratios on the dynamic shear responses. Based on the truss-arch model, a dynamic shear strength model was proposed and can well predict the dynamic shear capacity of FRP-strengthened RC circular columns. © 2025

This paper reports testing and numerical modeling program on high strength concrete-filled S700 cold-formed high strength steel (HCFHSS) built-up box-section stub columns to investigate their cross-sectional behavior and resistance. Twelve stub column tests were performed on HCFHSS built-up box-sections designed with three grades of high strength concretes, i.e. C60, C90 and C120. The ultimate loads, axial load–end shortening curves and failure modes of all test specimens were reported. The numerical program was then performed, in which stub column finite element models were developed and validated against the experimental observations, accounting for the confinement effect. Parametric studies incorporating 160 finite models were carried out for generating further numerical data. The test and numerical results were used to evaluate the applicability of the existing European Code (EC4), American Specification (AISC) and Chinese standard (GB) to HCFHSS built-up box-sections. The EC4 yielded overly conservative yet consistent predictions with a mean overprediction of 32 %, while the AISC design provisions were generally conservative by 26 % on average and exhibited notable inaccuracy, particularly for slender sections. In contrast, the GB design provisions provided the most accurate but unsafe predictions. To address the shortcomings, modified design provisions were thus proposed for HCFHSS built-up box-section stub columns and shown to yield improved design accuracy and consistency. © 2025 Elsevier Ltd

In the long-term service of life, structural columns may experience mechanical performance degradation due to environmental erosion, various hazards, and functional modifications. This study proposes a novel concrete column reinforcement method utilizing square corrugated steel jackets as external confinement components, which significantly enhances both bearing capacity and ductility of original members. To investigate the mechanical performance improvement mechanisms and load-carry mode, 10 axially compressed short column specimens were designed. Detailed analyses were conducted surrounding the effects of connection methods for corrugated sheets, corrugated steel thickness, and damage levels on load-displacement curves, as well as stress and strain development patterns. A computational model for ultimate bearing capacity of reinforced sections was established. key findings include: (1) The use of corrugated steel sleeves can enhance the ultimate bearing capacity of the original short columns by 34.6% to 67.3%. (2) Considering that the confinement effect of square sleeves is not optimal, it is more material-efficient to use thinner corrugated steel plates to achieve similar results. (3) There is no significant difference in the effects of connection types on mechanical performance. (4) The cracking and softening of damaged concrete can enhance the confinement effect in corrugated steel-strengthened reinforced concrete columns. (5) The confined concrete strength model can be used to accurately predict the ultimate bearing capacity. Copyright © 2025, The Authors. All rights reserved.

To improve the durability design level of the foundation bearing platform for offshore fixed wind power, Ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC) is used as a non-demolding membrane shell system, and a high-performance composite concrete bearing platform structure is formed with on-site pouring of core concrete. The interface performance between the prefabricated UHPC membrane shell and the post cast core concrete has become an important aspect of the overall integrity of the high-performance composite concrete bearing platform. The use of interface shear key design to improve interface integrity is necessary for improving the overall stress of the bearing platform structure.
