With the aim of resolving the issue of cluster analysis more precisely and validly, a new approach was proposed based on biogeography-based optimization (abbreviated as BBO) algorithm. (Method) First, we reformulated the problem with an optimization model based on the variance ratio criterion (VARAC). Then, BBO was presented to search the optimal solution of the VARAC. There are 400 data of four groups in the experimental dataset, which have the degrees of overlapping of three distinct scales. The first one is nonoverlapping, the second one is partial overlapping, and the last is severely overlapping. BBO algorithm was compared with three different state-of-the-art approaches. We ran every algorithm 20 times. In this experiment, our results demonstrate the maximum VARAC values that can be found by BBO. The conclusion is that BBO is predominant which is extremely quick for the issue of clustering analysis. © Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2017.

Although several surveys on Neural Combinatorial Optimization (NCO) solvers specifically designed to solve Vehicle Routing Problems (VRPs) have been conducted. These existing surveys did not cover the state-of-the-art (SOTA) NCO solvers emerged recently. More importantly, to provide a comprehensive taxonomy of NCO solvers with up-to-date coverage, based on our thorough review of relevant publications and preprints, we divide all NCO solvers into four distinct categories, namely Learning to Construct, Learning to Improve, Learning to Predict-Once, and Learning to Predict-Multiplicity solvers. Subsequently, we present the inadequacies of the SOTA solvers, including poor generalization, incapability to solve large-scale VRPs, inability to address most types of VRP variants simultaneously, and difficulty in comparing these NCO solvers with the conventional Operations Research algorithms. Simultaneously, we propose promising and viable directions to overcome these inadequacies. In addition, we compare the performance of representative NCO solvers from the Reinforcement, Supervised, and Unsupervised Learning paradigms across both small- and large-scale VRPs. Finally, following the proposed taxonomy, we provide an accompanying web page as a live repository for NCO solvers. Resource Scheduling for UAVs-aided D2D Networks: A Multi-objective Optimization Approach

Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs)-aided device-to-device (D2D) networks have attracted great interests with the development of 5G/6G communications, while there are several challenges about resource scheduling in UAVs-aided D2D networks. In this work, we formulate a UAVs-aided D2D network resource scheduling optimization problem (NetResSOP) to comprehensively consider the number of deployed UAVs, UAV positions, UAV transmission powers, UAV flight velocities, communication channels, and UAV-device pair assignment so as to maximize the D2D network capacity, minimize the number of deployed UAVs, and minimize the average energy consumption over all UAVs simultaneously. The formulated NetResSOP is a mixed-integer programming problem (MIPP) and an NP-hard problem, which means that it is difficult to be solved in polynomial time. Moreover, there are trade-offs between the optimization objectives, and hence it is also difficult to find an optimal solution that can simultaneously make all objectives be optimal. Thus, we propose a non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm-III with a Flexible solution dimension mechanism, a Discrete part generation mechanism, and a UAV number adjustment mechanism (NSGA-III-FDU) for solving the problem comprehensively. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness and the stability of the proposed NSGA-III-FDU under different scales and settings of the D2D networks. Copyright © 2023, The Authors. An Empirical Study on Information Extraction using Large Language Models

Human-like large language models (LLMs), especially the most powerful and popular ones in OpenAI’s GPT family, have proven to be very helpful for many natural language processing (NLP) related tasks. Therefore, various attempts have been made to apply LLMs to information extraction (IE), which is a fundamental NLP task that involves extracting information from unstructured plain text. To demonstrate the latest representative progress in LLMs’ information extraction ability, we assess the information extraction ability of GPT-4 (the latest version of GPT at the time of writing this paper) from four perspectives: Performance, Evaluation Criteria, Robustness, and Error Types. Our results suggest a visible performance gap between GPT-4 and state-of-the-art (SOTA) IE methods. To alleviate this problem, considering the LLMs’ human-like characteristics, we propose and analyze the effects of a series of simple prompt-based methods, which can be generalized to other LLMs and NLP tasks. Rich experiments show our methods’ effectiveness and some of their remaining issues in improving GPT-4’s information extraction ability. Copyright © 2023, The Authors. All rights reserved.

A Surrogate Model Based Genetic Algorithm for Complex Problem Solving

It is well known that when the fitness function is relatively complex, the optimization time cost of the genetic algorithm will be extremely huge. To address this issue, the surrogate model was employed to predict the fitness value of the optimization problem, to reduce the number of actual calculated fitness values. In this paper, BP neural network, the least square method and support vector machine were fused in the genetic algorithm to evaluate partial individuals' fitness. Sufficient benchmark numerical experiments were conducted, and the results proved that the strategy could reduce the calculating counts of fitness function on similar accuracy basis compared with simple genetic algorithm.

With the impressive achievements of chatGPT and Sora, generative artificial intelligence (GAI) has received increasing attention. Not limited to the field of content generation, GAI is also widely used to solve the problems in wireless communication scenarios due to its powerful learning and generalization capabilities. Therefore, we discuss key applications of GAI in improving unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) communication and networking performance in this article. Specifically, we first review the key technologies of GAI and the important roles of UAV networking. Then, we show how GAI can improve the communication, networking, and security performances of UAV systems. Subsequently, we propose a novel framework of GAI for advanced UAV networking, and then present a case study of UAV-enabled spectrum map estimation and transmission rate optimization based on the proposed framework to verify the effectiveness of GAI-enabled UAV systems. Finally, we discuss some important open directions. © 2024 IEEE.

Over the past decade, the dominance of deep learning has prevailed across various domains of artificial intelligence, including natural language processing, computer vision, and biomedical signal processing. While there have been remarkable improvements in model accuracy, deploying these models on lightweight devices, such as mobile phones and microcontrollers, is constrained by limited resources. In this survey, we provide comprehensive design guidance tailored for these devices, detailing the meticulous design of lightweight models, compression methods, and hardware acceleration strategies. The principal goal of this work is to explore methods and concepts for getting around hardware constraints without compromising the model's accuracy. Additionally, we explore two notable paths for lightweight deep learning in the future: deployment techniques for TinyML and Large Language Models. Automatic image annotation is an active topic and difficult task in computer vision domain, which has attracted more and more researchers' attention. Many approaches have been proposed to automatically annotate images. To improve the annotation quality, most of them have profound principlessophisticated modelsand high time complexities. How to efficiently annotate image is becoming one key issue in the field of computer vision. We propose a very efficient and effective approach called keyword vector classification approach, whose model is very simple. Experiments on Corel5K dataset show that the annotation performance of the our proposed approach is almost four times better than translation model and twice better than CMRM (in terms of precision, recall and F1) while the time cost of ours surprisingly decreases. In addition, to our knowledge, our proposed approach outperforms most of existing ones in terms of N+. © 2011 ISSN 1881-803X.

This paper is concerned with the unique identification of the shape of a scatterer through a single far-field pattern in an inverse elastic medium scattering problem with a generalized transmission boundary condition. The uniqueness issue by a single far-field measurement is a challenging problem in inverse scattering theory, which has a long and colorful history. In this paper, we demonstrate the well-posedness of the direct problem by the variational approach. We establish the uniqueness results by a single far-field measurement under a generic scenario when dealing with underlying elastic scatterers exhibiting polygonal-nest or polygonal-cell structures. Furthermore, for a polygonal-nest or polygonal-cell structure scatterer associated with density and boundary impedance parameters as piecewise constants, we show that these physical quantities can be uniquely determined simultaneously by a single far-field measurement. MAINet: Modality-Aware Interaction Network for Medical Image Fusion

Due to the limitations of imaging sensors, obtaining a medical image that simultaneously captures both functional metabolic data and structural tissue details remains a significant challenge in clinical diagnosis. To address this, Multimodal Medical Image Fusion (MMIF) has emerged as an effective technique for integrating complementary information from multimodal source images, such as CT, PET, and SPECT, which is critical for providing a comprehensive understanding of both anatomical and functional aspects of the human body. One of the key challenges in MMIF is how to exchange and aggregate this multimodal information. This paper rethinks MMIF by addressing the harmony of modality gaps and proposes a novel Modality-Aware Interaction Network (MAINet), which leverages cross-modal feature interaction and progressively fuses multiple features in graph space. Specifically, we introduce two key modules: the Cascade Modality Interaction (CMI) module and the Dual-Graph Learning (DGL) module. The CMI module, integrated within a multi-scale encoder with triple branches, facilitates complementary multimodal feature learning and provides beneficial feedback to enhance discriminative feature learning across modalities. In the decoding process, the DGL module aggregates hierarchical features in two distinct graph spaces, enabling global feature interactions. Moreover, the DGL module incorporates a bottom-up guidance mechanism, where deeper semantic features guide the learning of shallower detail features, thus improving the fusion process by enhancing both scale diversity and modality awareness for visual fidelity results. Experimental results on medical image datasets demonstrate the superiority of the proposed method over existing fusion approaches in both subjective and objective evaluations. We also validated the performance of the proposed method in applications such as infrared-visible image fusion and medical image segmentation.
