CMRM: Collaborative Multi-agent Reinforcement Learning for Multi-objective Traffic Signal Control

Efficient traffic signal control is a cost-effective way to ease urban traffic congestion. Multi-agent reinforcement learning (MARL) has become a widely adopted method for optimizing traffic signal control (TSC). However, existing MARL-based methods often focus on a single optimization objective, lacking a comprehensive consideration of traffic efficiency, environmental pollution, and traffic safety. Simultaneously, these methods often fail to effectively capture the dynamic and complex interactions among agents in multi-intersection scenarios, which negatively impacts traffic efficiency. In this article, we propose a collaborative MARL-based method for multi-objective TSC, called CMRM. First, we introduce a multi-objective reward mechanism that integrates traffic efficiency, environmental impact, and safety to guide agents toward more comprehensive optimization. Second, we design a cooperation enhancement module (CEM) based on the graph attention mechanism to dynamically capture neighboring agents’ state information. This mitigates the partial observability problem in independent proximal policy optimization (IPPO) and enhances the model’s ability to capture dynamic and complex interactions among agents. Finally, we assess the performance of the proposed CMRM method using SUMO on two real traffic networks. Experimental results demonstrate that our method significantly improves traffic efficiency while reducing environmental pollution and enhancing traffic safety, compared to the best performing baseline, our method reduces CO2 emission by approximately 17.53% and 9.57%, and lowers vehicle collision risks by 44.39% and 42.85% in two different traffic networks. © 1975-2011 IEEE.

A Two-Dimensional Improvement for Farr-Gao Algorithm

Farr-Gao algorithm is a state-of-the-art algorithm for reduced Gr?bner bases of vanishing ideals of finite points, which has been implemented in Maple as a build-in command. This paper presents a two-dimensional improvement for it that employs a preprocessing strategy for computing reduced Gr?bner bases associated with tower subsets of given point sets. Experimental results show that the preprocessed Farr-Gao algorithm is more efficient than the classical one.

SpatioTemporal Learning for Human Pose Estimation in Sparsely-Labeled Videos

Human pose estimation in videos remains a challenge, largely due to the reliance on extensive manual annotation of large datasets, which is expensive and labor-intensive. Furthermore, existing approaches often struggle to capture long-range temporal dependencies and overlook the complementary relationship between temporal pose heatmaps and visual features. To address these limitations, we introduce STDPose, a novel framework that enhances human pose estimation by learning spatiotemporal dynamics in sparsely-labeled videos. STDPose incorporates two key innovations: 1) A novel Dynamic-Aware Mask to capture long-range motion context, allowing for a nuanced understanding of pose changes. 2) A system for encoding and aggregating spatiotemporal representations and motion dynamics to effectively model spatiotemporal relationships, improving the accuracy and robustness of pose estimation. STDPose establishes a new performance benchmark for both video pose propagation (i.e., propagating pose annotations from labeled frames to unlabeled frames) and pose estimation tasks, across three large-scale evaluation datasets. Additionally, utilizing pseudo-labels generated by pose propagation, STDPose achieves competitive performance with only 26.7% labeled data. Copyright © 2025, The Authors. All rights reserved.

HVIS: A Human-like Vision and Inference System for Human Motion Prediction

Grasping the intricacies of human motion, which involve perceiving spatio-temporal dependence and multi-scale effects, is essential for predicting human motion. While humans inherently possess the requisite skills to navigate this issue, it proves to be markedly more challenging for machines to emulate. To bridge the gap, we propose the Human-like Vision and Inference System (HVIS) for human motion prediction, which is designed to emulate human observation and forecast future movements. HVIS comprises two components: the human-like vision encode (HVE) module and the human-like motion inference (HMI) module. The HVE module mimics and refines the human visual process, incorporating a retina-analog component that captures spatiotemporal information separately to avoid unnecessary crosstalk. Additionally, a visual cortex-analogy component is designed to hierarchically extract and treat complex motion features, focusing on both global and local features of human poses. The HMI is employed to simulate the multi-stage learning model of the human brain. The spontaneous learning network simulates the neuronal fracture generation process for the adversarial generation of future motions. Subsequently, the deliberate learning network is optimized for hard-to-train joints to prevent misleading learning. Experimental results demonstrate that our method achieves new state-of-the-art performance, significantly outperforming existing methods by 19.8% on Human3.6M, 15.7% on CMU Mocap, and 11.1% on G3D. © 2025, CC BY.

Causality-inspired Unsupervised Domain Adaptation with Target Style Imitation for Medical Image Segmentation

Deep learning performance may decrease substantially with unseen heterogeneous data. While most unsupervised domain adaptation (UDA) methods seek to address this through image alignment, they often ignore uncertainty style fluctuations within the target domain. When testing image styles vary in both direction and intensity, such models may fail to adapt. Furthermore, existing UDA methods tend to over-reliance on domain-level entire feature alignment, resulting in potentially over-exploiting semantic content-independent cues (e.g., intensity) as shortcut features. To address these limitations, this paper introduces an innovative and model-agnostic Causality-inspired Representation Learning Based on Target Style Imitation method for UDA. Specifically, we propose a novel Target Style Imitation (TSI) data augmentation approach to diversify the training data and align training and unseen target testing image styles. TSI constructs a Gaussian distribution for the target domain style and simulates unseen testing style variations through random sampling. Additionally, inspired by the stable and generalizable causal mechanism, we propose Causality-inspired Representation Learning (CRL) based on TSI method to enforce feature representations to adhere to causal properties (i.e., Separation and Independence) essential for robust UDA, thus fostering the model to focus on the domain-invariant semantic features. Our method surpasses state-of-the-art methods on two cross-modality medical image segmentation datasets. © 1991-2012 IEEE.

The Equivalent Representation of the Breadth-One D-Invariant Polynomial Subspace and Its Discretization

This paper demonstrates the equivalence of two classes of D-invariant polynomial subspaces, i.e., these two classes of subspaces are different representations of the breadth-one D-invariant subspace. Moreover, the authors solve the discrete approximation problem in ideal interpolation for the breadth-one D-invariant subspace. Namely, the authors find the points, such that the limiting space of the evaluation functionals at these points is the functional space induced by the given D-invariant subspace, as the evaluation points all coalesce at one point.

UAV-assisted Joint Mobile Edge Computing and Data Collection via Matching-enabled Deep Reinforcement Learning

Unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-assisted mobile edge computing (MEC) and data collection (DC) have been popular research issues. Different from existing works that consider MEC and DC scenarios separately, this paper investigates a multi-UAV-assisted joint MEC-DC system. Specifically, we formulate a joint optimization problem to minimize the MEC latency and maximize the collected data volume. This problem can be classified as a non-convex mixed integer programming problem that exhibits long-term optimization and dynamics. Thus, we propose a deep reinforcement learning-based approach that jointly optimizes the UAV movement, user transmit power, and user association in real time to solve the problem efficiently. Specifically, we reformulate the optimization problem into an action space-reduced Markov decision process (MDP) and optimize the user association by using a two-phase matching-based association (TMA) strategy. Subsequently, we propose a soft actor-critic (SAC)-based approach that integrates the proposed TMA strategy (SAC-TMA) to solve the formulated joint optimization problem collaboratively. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed SAC-TMA is able to coordinate the two subsystems and can effectively reduce the system latency and improve the data collection volume compared with other benchmark algorithms. Efficient and Privacy-Preserving Weighted Nearby-Fit Spatial keyword Query in Cloud

In the modern digital landscape, integrating geographic locations and textual descriptions within a geo-textual dataset enhances location-based services (LBS) via spatial keyword queries, as these queries combine spatial and textual information to deliver more precise and personalized results. Additionally, the advent of cloud computing allows data owners to outsource data management and services to the cloud, boosting scalability but introducing efficiency challenges due to complex encryption. Although many schemes have been proposed for spatial keyword queries on encrypted geo-textual data, none supports matching a query keyword set with the keyword sets of multiple objects, a common query type in LBS. Imagine a user seeking to rent a house close to his/her workplace, with easy access to conveniences like supermarkets. By using nearby-fit spatial keyword queries, we can match the desired house with a house-type target object and its nearby amenities, offering more practical and flexible recommendations than traditional spatial keyword queries. Hence, in this paper, we introduce an efficient and privacy-preserving scheme called the Privacy-preserving Weighted Nearby-fit Spatial keyword (PWNSK) query scheme. First, we design a target-oriented spatial keyword (TOSK) tree for data organization and a TOSK tree based WNSK query algorithm for efficient pruning by simultaneously utilizing locations, keywords, and distances from nearby objects to target objects. For privacy, we develop several protocols, including one for polynomial coefficient re-encoding, based on polynomial coefficient encoding and fully homomorphic encryption. Building on these protocols, we introduce our PWNSK scheme. A thorough security analysis confirms its robustness, while extensive experiments also showcase its effectiveness. © 2014 IEEE.

Unknown Task Selection and Worker Recruitment Using Two-Stage Multi-Armed Bandit in Crowdsensing

Mobile Crowdsensing (MCS) faces significant challenges in selecting tasks with expected high revenue and recruiting workers with expected high qualities to maximize overall utility. Existing approaches often assume the revenue of posting tasks or the quality of workers is determined, which limits their practical applicability. This paper tackles these challenges by modeling the long-term multi-task, multi-worker selection problem as a Two-Stage Multi-Armed Bandit (TS-MAB) problem under uncertainty. In each round, the MCS platform selects a long-term task from a pool and recruits the necessary workers, determining payments accordingly. We model the task selection phase as a MAB problem, and the worker recruitment phase, influenced by the task selection, as a Combinatorial MAB (CMAB) problem. We propose an extended Upper Confidence Bound (UCB)-based strategy and develop an incentive mechanism based on Auction theory, combined with TS-MAB (i.e., ATS-MAB), for unknown task selection and worker recruitment. Our mechanism theoretically guarantees truthfulness and individual rationality, with a theoretical analysis of its regret bounds. Furthermore, we introduce an adaptive incentive mechanism called AATS-MAB, which improves worker recruitment and quality updates, achieving higher total sensing quality and lower regret. Extensive simulations demonstrate the effectiveness and scalability of the proposed methods. © 2014 IEEE.

Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites can be used to assist maritime wireless communications for data transmission across wide-ranging areas. However, extensive coverage of LEO satellites, combined with openness of channels, can cause the communication process to suffer from security risks. This paper presents a low-altitude friendly-jamming LEO satellite-maritime communication system enabled by a unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) to ensure data security at the physical layer. Since such a system requires trade-off policies that balance the secrecy rate and energy consumption of the UAV to meet evolving scenario demands, we formulate a secure satellite-maritime communication multi-objective optimization problem (SSMCMOP). In order to solve the dynamic and long-term optimization problem, we reformulate it into a Markov decision process. We then propose a transformer-enhanced soft actor critic (TransSAC) algorithm, which is a generative artificial intelligence-enable deep reinforcement learning approach to solve the reformulated problem, so that capturing global dependencies and diversely exploring weights. Simulation results demonstrate that the TransSAC outperforms various baselines, and achieves an optimal secrecy rate while effectively minimizing the energy consumption of the UAV.
