Collaborative WSN-UAV Data Collection in Smart Agriculture: A Bi-objective Optimization Scheme

Smart agriculture which integrates the agriculture with Internet of Things (IoT) has attracted attention since it contributes to increase the productivity and quality of crops, reduce energy consumption and facilitate the farmers. Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are two most commonly deployed devices that are used for enabling the smart agriculture. In this paper, we design a collaborative WSN-UAV system, wherein different clusters of sensor nodes form different sensor-based virtual antenna arrays (SVAAs) to transmit the collected data towards different receiver UAVs via adopting collaborative beamforming (CB), then the receiver UAVs will take the collected data back to the ground control station (GCS). We formulate a transmission rate and battery energy bi-objective optimization problem (TRBEBOP) to simultaneously maximize the total transmission rate of the sensor-based CB clusters and the total remaining battery energy of the selected sensor nodes, by selecting appropriate sensor nodes in each cluster that can form a predominant SVAA, determining suitable receiver UAVs and optimizing the excitation current weights of the selected sensor nodes. To handle the formulated TRBEBOP that is demonstrated to be non-convex and NP-hard, an enhanced non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm II (ENSGA-II) with several specific designs is presented. Simulation results validate the effectiveness of the proposed ENSGA-II for solving the formulated TRBEBOP. Moreover, compared with other benchmark algorithms, the superiority of the proposed ENSGA-II is demonstrated. In addition, the impacts of several fortuitous circumstances on the system are estimated, and the results illustrate the robustness of the proposed scheme. Finally, the discussion about several mechanisms to deal with the interference induced by the sidelobe levels and the impact of UAV movement on receiving rate are provided.

In the Internet of things (IoT) era, vehicles and other intelligent components in an intelligent transportation system (ITS) are connected, forming vehicular networks (VNs) that provide efficient and safe traffic and ubiquitous access to various applications. However, as the number of nodes in an ITS increases, it is challenging to satisfy a varied and large number of service requests with different quality of service (QoS) and security requirements in highly dynamic VNs. Intelligent nodes in VNs can compete or cooperate for limited network resources to achieve the objective for either an individual or a group. Game theory (GT), a theoretical framework designed for strategic interactions among rational decision makers sharing scarce resources, can be used to model and analyze individual or group behaviors of communicating entities in VNs. This paper primarily surveys the recent developments of GT in solving various challenges of VNs. This survey starts with an introduction to the background of VNs. A review of GT models studied in the VNs is then introduced, including the basic concepts, classifications, and applicable vehicular issues. After discussing the requirements of VNs and the motivation of using GT, a comprehensive literature review on GT applications in dealing with the challenges of current VNs is provided. Furthermore, recent contributions of GT to VNs that are integrated with diverse emerging 5G technologies are surveyed. Finally, the lessons learned are given, and several key research challenges and possible solutions of applying GT in VNs are outlined. Copyright © 2021, The Authors. All rights reserved.

The evolutionary algorithm has become a major method for neural architecture search recently. However, the fixed probability distribution adopted by the traditional evolutionary algorithm makes the algorithm unable to control the increase or decrease of the individual architecture size and thus cannot guarantee the lightweight and inference efficiency of the candidate architecture. In addition, the existing approaches cannot learn the optimal sampling probability distribution relevant to the specific problem from the empirical information accumulated through the search process. What’s more, the algorithm needs to evaluate the performance of all the individual architectures, which requires huge computing resources and time overhead. To overcome these problems and challenges, an Efficient Self-learning Evolutionary Neural Architecture Search method, called ESE-NAS, is presented in this paper. Firstly, we propose a Model Size Control module, which generates the probability distribution for sampling the type of mutation operators according to the current model size, so as to control both the node number of network architecture and the sparsity of links, therefore ensuring that neural architectures can remain compact and efficient as they evolve. Thereafter, a Mutation Candidate Credit Assignment method is proposed, which enables the algorithm to dynamically adjust the probability distribution for available types of node operations and directed links according to the empirical information from individuals’ performance evaluation, which can guide the evolutionary direction of neural architecture and shorten the first hitting time of the optimal architecture. Finally, a neural architecture performance predictor is formulated, and the accuracy of each individual architecture is predicted by using the simplified input features, to further improve the efficiency of neural architecture search. Due to flexibility and low-cost, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are increasingly crucial for enhancing coverage and functionality of wireless networks. However, incorporating UAVs into next-generation wireless communication systems poses significant challenges, particularly in sustaining high-rate and long-range secure communications against eavesdropping attacks. In this work, we consider a UAV swarm-enabled secure surveillance network system, where a UAV swarm forms a virtual antenna array to transmit sensitive surveillance data to a remote base station (RBS) via collaborative beamforming (CB) so as to resist mobile eavesdroppers. Specifically, we formulate an aerial secure communication and energy efficiency multi-objective optimization problem (ASCEE-MOP) to maximize the secrecy rate of the system and to minimize the flight energy consumption of the UAV swarm. To address the non-convex, NP-hard and dynamic ASCEE-MOP, we propose a generative diffusion model-enabled twin delayed deep deterministic policy gradient (GDMTD3) method. Specifically, GDMTD3 leverages an innovative application of diffusion models to determine optimal excitation current weights and position decisions of UAVs. The diffusion models can better capture the complex dynamics and the trade-off of the ASCEE-MOP, thereby yielding promising solutions. Simulation results highlight the superior performance of the proposed approach compared with traditional deployment strategies and some other deep reinforcement learning (DRL) benchmarks. Moreover, performance analysis under various parameter settings of GDMTD3 and different numbers of UAVs verifies the robustness of the proposed approach. Copyright © 2024, The Authors. Recent developments in unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and mobile edge computing (MEC) have provided users with flexible and resilient computing services. However, meeting the computing-intensive and latency-sensitive demands of users poses a significant challenge due to the limited resources of UAVs. To address this challenge, we present a multi-objective optimization approach for multi-UAV-assisted MEC systems. First, we formulate a multi-objective optimization problem aiming at minimizing the total task completion delay, reducing the total UAV energy consumption, and maximizing the total amount of offloaded tasks by jointly optimizing task offloading, computation resource allocation, and UAV trajectory control. Since the problem is a mixed-integer non-linear programming (MINLP) and NP-hard problem which is challenging, we propose a joint task offloading, computation resource allocation, and UAV trajectory control (JTORATC) approach to solve the problem. However, since the decision variables of task offloading, computation resource allocation, and UAV trajectory control are coupled with each other, the original problem is split into three sub-problems, i.e., task offloading, computation resource allocation, and UAV trajectory control, which are solved individually to obtain the corresponding decisions. Moreover, the sub-problem of task offloading is solved by using distributed splitting and threshold rounding methods, the sub-problem of computation resource allocation is solved by adopting the Karush-Kuhn-Tucker (KKT) method, and the sub-problem of UAV trajectory control is solved by employing the successive convex approximation (SCA) method. Simulation results show that the proposed JTORATC has superior performance compared to the other benchmark methods. Copyright © 2024, The Authors. All rights reserved.

The Response of Lake to Glacier in Akesu River-Kaidu River Small Watershed during 30 Years

Glacier is a sensitive indicator of the climate change, and also closely related to human beings. RS and GIS supply effective means to research the change of glacier. Those are important methods for compensating the shortage of previous ones. Small watershed is the basic unit of water circulation. Thus, the more reliable conclusion, which is the response of lake to glacier, will be obtained by the small watershed. In this paper, dividing the watershed into the smaller one, the Akesu River-Kaidu River small watershed was chosen as study area. Based on RS and GIS, under the climate change from cold-dry to warm-wet since 1977, 2000 and 2007, the variety of glacier was shown as decreasing firstly and then increasing a little. Meanwhile, the variety of lake was presented as increasing firstly and then decreasing greatly. However, the change tendency of glacier and lake was decreased. The decreased areas were 823.3 km2 and 239.5km2 separately. According to the spatial bivariate auto-correlation analysis map, the negative correlation between glacier and lake was more distinct. In Tianshan Mountain, owing to the change mainly influenced by elevation, glacier was decreased and lake was increased. In Bosten Lake, glacier was increased and lake was decreased due to the change mainly affected by climate.

In this paper, we proposed a medical image fusion algorithm based on sparse representation and guided filtering. One of attractive features in the algorithm is that it can preserve the structural information of structural image and color information of functional image. We use a sparse representation in low frequency, initialize the dictionary by using DCT transform, and train the dictionary with each input source image as a training example. It not only ensures time complexity, but also ensures that the low-frequency fusion rules are adaptive. At high frequencies, we use the method of guided filtering to extract structural information from high-frequency images, and use the injection method to fuse high-frequency sub-bands to ensure the validity and richness of structural information. Experimental results show that the proposed fusion algorithm is superior to comparative algorithms in terms of subjective and objective evaluation methods.

While many Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithms only use fitness to assess the performance of particles, in this work, we adopt Surprisingly Popular Algorithm (SPA) as a complementary metric in addition to fitness. Consequently, particles that are not widely known also have the opportunity to be selected as the learning exemplars. In addition, we propose a Euclidean distance-based adaptive topology to cooperate with SPA, where each particle only connects to k number of particles with the shortest Euclidean distance during each iteration. We also introduce the adaptive topology into heterogeneous populations to better solve large-scale problems. Specifically, the exploration sub-population better preserves the diversity of the population while the exploitation sub-population achieves fast convergence. Therefore, large-scale problems can be solved in a collaborative manner to elevate the overall performance. To evaluate the performance of our method, we conduct extensive experiments on various optimization problems, including three benchmark suites and two real-world optimization problems. The results demonstrate that our Euclidean distance-based adaptive topology outperforms the other widely adopted topologies and further suggest that our method performs significantly better than state-of-the-art PSO variants on small, medium, and large-scale problems. Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have gained considerable attention as a platform for establishing aerial wireless networks and communications. However, the line-of-sight dominance in air-to-ground communications often leads to significant interference with terrestrial networks, reducing communication efficiency among terrestrial terminals. This paper explores a novel uplink interference mitigation approach based on the collaborative beamforming (CB) method in multi-UAV network systems. Specifically, the UAV swarm forms a UAV-enabled virtual antenna array (VAA) to achieve the transmissions of gathered data to multiple base stations (BSs) for data backup and distributed processing. However, there is a trade-off between the effectiveness of CB-based interference mitigation and the energy conservation of UAVs. Thus, by jointly optimizing the excitation current weights and hover position of UAVs as well as the sequence of data transmission to various BSs, we formulate an uplink interference mitigation multi-objective optimization problem (MOOP) to decrease interference affection, enhance transmission efficiency, and improve energy efficiency, simultaneously. In response to the computational demands of the formulated problem, we introduce an evolutionary computation method, namely chaotic non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm II (CNSGA-II) with multiple improved operators. The proposed CNSGA-II efficiently addresses the formulated MOOP, outperforming several other comparative algorithms, as evidenced by the outcomes of the simulations. Moreover, the proposed CB-based uplink interference mitigation approach can significantly reduce the interference caused by UAVs to non-receiving BSs. Copyright © 2024, The Authors. Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) as aerial relays are practically appealing for assisting Internet of Things (IoT) network. In this work, we aim to utilize the UAV swarm to assist the secure communication between the micro base station (MBS) equipped with the planar array antenna (PAA) and the IoT terminal devices by collaborative beamforming (CB), so as to counteract the effects of collusive eavesdropping attacks in time-domain. Specifically, we formulate a UAV swarm-enabled secure relay multi-objective optimization problem (US2RMOP) for simultaneously maximizing the achievable sum rate of associated IoT terminal devices, minimizing the achievable sum rate of the eavesdropper and minimizing the energy consumption of UAV swarm, by jointly optimizing the excitation current weights of both MBS and UAV swarm, the selection of the UAV receiver, the position of UAVs and user association order of IoT terminal devices. Furthermore, the formulated US2RMOP is proved to be a non-convex, NP-hard and large-scale optimization problem. Therefore, we propose an improved multi-objective grasshopper algorithm (IMOGOA) with some specific designs to address the problem. Simulation results exhibit the effectiveness of the proposed UAV swarm-enabled collaborative secure relay strategy and demonstrate the superiority of IMOGOA. Copyright © 2023, The Authors.
