The low-altitude economy (LAE), as a new economic paradigm, plays an indispensable role in cargo transportation, healthcare, infrastructure inspection, and especially post-disaster communication. Specifically, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), as one of the core technologies of the LAE, can be deployed to provide communication coverage, facilitate data collection, and relay data for trapped users, thereby significantly enhancing the efficiency of post-disaster response efforts. However, conventional UAV self-organizing networks exhibit low reliability in long-range cases due to their limited onboard energy and transmit ability. Therefore, in this paper, we design an efficient and robust UAV-swarm enabled collaborative self-organizing network to facilitate post-disaster communications. Specifically, a ground device transmits data to UAV swarms, which then use collaborative beamforming (CB) technique to form virtual antenna arrays and relay the data to a remote access point (AP) efficiently. Then, we formulate a rescue-oriented post-disaster transmission rate maximization optimization problem (RPTRMOP), aimed at maximizing the transmission rate of the whole network. Given the challenges of solving the formulated RPTRMOP by using traditional algorithms, we propose a two-stage optimization approach to address it. In the first stage, the optimal traffic routing and the theoretical upper bound on the transmission rate of the network are derived. In the second stage, we transform the formulated RPTRMOP into a variant named V-RPTRMOP based on the obtained optimal traffic routing, aimed at rendering the actual transmission rate closely approaches its theoretical upper bound by optimizing the excitation current weight and the placement of each participating UAV via a diffusion model-enabled particle swarm optimization (DM-PSO) algorithm. Wide aspect ratio matching for robust face detection

Recently, anchor-based methods have achieved great progress in face detection. Once anchor design and anchor matching strategy determined, plenty of positive anchors will be sampled. However, faces with extreme aspect ratio always fail to be sampled according to standard anchor matching strategy. In fact, the max IoUs between anchors and extreme aspect ratio faces are still lower than fixed sampling threshold. In this paper, we firstly explore the factors that affect the max IoU of each face in theory. Then, anchor matching simulation is performed to evaluate the sampling range of face aspect ratio. Besides, we propose a Wide Aspect Ratio Matching (WARM) strategy to collect more representative positive anchors from ground-truth faces across a wide range of aspect ratio. Finally, we present a novel feature enhancement module, named Receptive Field Diversity (RFD) module, to provide diverse receptive field corresponding to different aspect ratios. Extensive experiments show that our method can help detectors better capture extreme aspect ratio faces and achieve promising detection performance on challenging face detection benchmarks, including WIDER FACE and FDDB datasets. © 2021, CC BY.

UAV-enabled Collaborative Beamforming via Multi-Agent Deep Reinforcement Learning

In this paper, we investigate an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-assistant air-to-ground communication system, where multiple UAVs form a UAV-enabled virtual antenna array (UVAA) to communicate with remote base stations by utilizing collaborative beamforming. To improve the work efficiency of the UVAA, we formulate a UAV-enabled collaborative beamforming multi-objective optimization problem (UCBMOP) to simultaneously maximize the transmission rate of the UVAA and minimize the energy consumption of all UAVs by optimizing the positions and excitation current weights of all UAVs. This problem is challenging because these two optimization objectives conflict with each other, and they are non-concave to the optimization variables. Moreover, the system is dynamic, and the cooperation among UAVs is complex, making traditional methods take much time to compute the optimization solution for a single task. In addition, as the task changes, the previously obtained solution will become obsolete and invalid. To handle these issues, we leverage the multi-agent deep reinforcement learning (MADRL) to address the UCBMOP. Specifically, we use the heterogeneous-agent trust region policy optimization (HATRPO) as the basic framework, and then propose an improved HATRPO algorithm, namely HATRPO-UCB, where three techniques are introduced to enhance the performance. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm can learn a better strategy compared with other methods. Resource Scheduling for UAVs-aided D2D Networks: A Multi-objective Optimization Approach

Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs)-aided device-to-device (D2D) networks have attracted great interests with the development of 5G/6G communications, while there are several challenges about resource scheduling in UAVs-aided D2D networks. In this work, we formulate a UAVs-aided D2D network resource scheduling optimization problem (NetResSOP) to comprehensively consider the number of deployed UAVs, UAV positions, UAV transmission powers, UAV flight velocities, communication channels, and UAV-device pair assignment so as to maximize the D2D network capacity, minimize the number of deployed UAVs, and minimize the average energy consumption over all UAVs simultaneously. The formulated NetResSOP is a mixed-integer programming problem (MIPP) and an NP-hard problem, which means that it is difficult to be solved in polynomial time. Moreover, there are trade-offs between the optimization objectives, and hence it is also difficult to find an optimal solution that can simultaneously make all objectives be optimal. Thus, we propose a non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm-III with a Flexible solution dimension mechanism, a Discrete part generation mechanism, and a UAV number adjustment mechanism (NSGA-III-FDU) for solving the problem comprehensively. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness and the stability of the proposed NSGA-III-FDU under different scales and settings of the D2D networks. Copyright © 2023, The Authors. Deep learning often requires large amounts of data from different institutions. Federated learning, as a distributed training framework, enables multiple participants to collaboratively train models without collecting data together and hence protecting data privacy, but the datasets from different institutions usually bring the problem of domain shift, which affects the performance of the model. When addressing domain shift, previous works often use a single global model to share parameters. Therefore, we propose a novel method to train multiple public models with different structures under the federated framework to improve the reliability and robustness of the public models. And each participant keeps its own domain-tuned private model, the private model does not share parameters with other participants. We use Mixture of Experts (moe) domain adaptation to dynamically combine different public models and private model, which utilizes the similarity between different datasets to update the parameters of the public models. We apply the proposed method to the multi-site Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) end-to-end classification, and the experiments demonstrate its effectiveness.

An Empirical Study on Information Extraction using Large Language Models

Human-like large language models (LLMs), especially the most powerful and popular ones in OpenAI’s GPT family, have proven to be very helpful for many natural language processing (NLP) related tasks. Therefore, various attempts have been made to apply LLMs to information extraction (IE), which is a fundamental NLP task that involves extracting information from unstructured plain text. To demonstrate the latest representative progress in LLMs’ information extraction ability, we assess the information extraction ability of GPT-4 (the latest version of GPT at the time of writing this paper) from four perspectives: Performance, Evaluation Criteria, Robustness, and Error Types. Our results suggest a visible performance gap between GPT-4 and state-of-the-art (SOTA) IE methods. To alleviate this problem, considering the LLMs’ human-like characteristics, we propose and analyze the effects of a series of simple prompt-based methods, which can be generalized to other LLMs and NLP tasks. Rich experiments show our methods’ effectiveness and some of their remaining issues in improving GPT-4’s information extraction ability. Copyright © 2023, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Reinforced iterative knowledge distillation for cross-lingual named entity recognition

Named entity recognition (NER) is a fundamental component in many applications, such as Web Search and Voice Assistants. Although deep neural networks greatly improve the performance of NER, due to the requirement of large amounts of training data, deep neural networks can hardly scale out to many languages in an industry setting. To tackle this challenge, cross-lingual NER transfers knowledge from a rich-resource language to languages with low resources through pre-trained multilingual language models. Instead of using training data in target languages, cross-lingual NER has to rely on only training data in source languages, and optionally adds the translated training data derived from source languages. However, the existing cross-lingual NER methods do not make good use of rich unlabeled data in target languages, which is relatively easy to collect in industry applications. To address the opportunities and challenges, in this paper we describe our novel practice in Microsoft to leverage such large amounts of unlabeled data in target languages in real production settings. To effectively extract weak supervision signals from the unlabeled data, we develop a novel approach based on the ideas of semi-supervised learning and reinforcement learning. The empirical study on three benchmark data sets verifies that our approach establishes the new state-of-the-art performance with clear edges. Now, the NER techniques reported in this paper are on their way to become a fundamental component for Web ranking, Entity Pane, Answers Triggering, and Question Answering in the Microsoft Bing search engine. Moreover, our techniques will also serve as part of the Spoken Language Understanding module for a commercial voice assistant. In this paper, we present XDN, an optimization and inference engine for accelerating residual neural networks on Cambricon chips. We leverage a channel pruning method to compress the weights of ResNet-50. By exploring the optimization opportunities in computational graphs, we propose a layer fusion strategy, which dramatically decreases the number of scalar computation layers, such as Batch Normalization, Scale. Furthermore, we design an efficient implementation of XDN, including data preprocessing, hyper-parameter auto-tuning, etc. The experimental results show that the ResNet-50 model can achieve significant speedup without accuracy loss by using our XDN engine. © Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2020.

In this paper, we investigate a transmission eigenvalue problem that couples the principles of acoustics and elasticity. This problem naturally arises when studying fluid-solid interactions and constructing bubbly-elastic structures to create metamaterials. We uncover intriguing local geometric structures of the transmission eigenfunctions near the corners of the domains, under typical regularity conditions. As applications, we present novel unique identifiability and visibility results for an inverse problem associated with an acoustoelastic system, which hold practical significance. © 2025 Elsevier Inc.

The use of deep learning for fault diagnosis is already a commonly used method. However, complex operating conditions under different working conditions significantly impact bearing vibration signals. Integrating the discriminative information of fault type and size into the deep learning model to achieve rich multi-task fault feature diagnosis still deserves attention. This study proposes a deep multi-task-based multi-scale feature fusion network MEAT(multi-task-based deep multi-scale feature fusion network) model to address these issues. Solve the limitations and poor adaptability of traditional convolutional neural network models under complex work. This model considers two sub-tasks, fault scale discrimination, and fault type discrimination, in the fault diagnosis multi-classification task through multi-task mapping decomposition. First, multi-dimensional features are extracted by convolution at different scales to obtain multi-dimensional fault information at different levels. Then these features are weighted and fused using a multi-layer attention mechanism to get accurate diagnosis results of bearing faults. © 2022, The Authors. All rights reserved.
