Few-shot learning (FSL) aims to learn to new concepts based on very limited data. One of the main challenges in FSL is the use of pretrained embeddings whose dimension is too high for the small sample size. While the large dimensionality helps capture diverse features in the training example, not all the features are relevant to the task at hand. Such task-irrelevant features from pre-trained embeddings can negatively impact the performance of the FSL model. To address this challenge, we propose a simple yet effective way to learn task-level manifolds that explicitly eliminate the negative effect of nuisance features. One key novelty of our approach is to address class imbalance in the training data by injecting supervised information through key virtual samples, which we named Manifold Support Points. Empirically, we demonstrate that the stability of the learnt task-level manifolds and their effectiveness in challenging tasks in FSL. Our approach shows competitive performance on several benchmark datasets, including tieredImageNet and CUB.

Unsupervised Sentence Representation Learning with Frequency-induced Adversarial Tuning and Incomplete Sentence Filtering

Pre-trained Language Model (PLM) is nowadays the mainstay of Unsupervised Sentence Representation Learning (USRL). However, PLMs are sensitive to the frequency information of words from their pre-training corpora, resulting in anisotropic embedding space, where the embeddings of high-frequency words are clustered but those of low-frequency words disperse sparsely. This anisotropic phenomenon results in two problems of similarity bias and information bias, lowering the quality of sentence embeddings. To solve the problems, we fine-tune PLMs by leveraging the frequency information of words and propose a novel USRL framework, namely Sentence Representation Learning with Frequency-induced Adversarial tuning and Incomplete sentence filtering (SLT-FAI). We calculate the word frequencies over the pre-training corpora of PLMs and assign words thresholding frequency labels. With them, (1) we incorporate a similarity discriminator used to distinguish the embeddings of high-frequency and low-frequency words, and adversarially tune the PLM with it, enabling to achieve uniformly frequency-invariant embedding space;and (2) we propose a novel incomplete sentence detection task, where we incorporate an information discriminator to distinguish the embeddings of original sentences and incomplete sentences by randomly masking several low-frequency words, enabling to emphasize the more informative low-frequency words. Our SLT-FAI is a flexible and plug-and-play framework, and it can be integrated with existing USRL techniques. We evaluate SLT-FAI with various backbones on benchmark datasets. CCDD: A Tractable Representation for Model Counting and Uniform Sampling

knowledge compilation concerns with the compilation of representation languages to target languages supporting a wide range of tractable operations arising from diverse areas of computer science. Tractable target compilation languages are usually achieved by restrictions on the internal nodes (∧ or ∨) of the NNF. In this paper, we propose a new representation language CCDD, which introduces new restrictions on conjunction nodes to capture equivalent literals. We show that CCDD supports two key queries, model counting and uniform samping, in polytime. We present algorithms and a compiler to compile propositional formulas expressed in CNF into CCDD. Experiments over a large set of benchmarks show that our compilation times are better with smaller representations than state-of-art Decision-DNNF, SDD and OBDD[∧] compilers. We apply our techniques to model counting and uniform sampling, and develop model counter and uniform sampler on CNF. Our empirical evaluation demonstrates the following significant improvements: our model counter can solve 885 instances while the prior state of the art solved only 843 instances, representing an improvement of 43 instances;and our uniform sampler can solve 780 instances while the prior state of the art solved only 648 instances, representing an improvement of 132 instances. Iris images captured in less-constrained environments often suffer from adverse noise, challenging many existing segmentation algorithms. In this paper, we propose an efficient Hybrid Transformer U-Net (HTU-Net) to address this dilemma. Unlike previous studies that only focus on utilizing popular CNN technology to predict iris masks accurately, HTU-Net can simultaneously obtain segmentation masks and parameterized pupillary and limbic boundaries by a multi-task network, further enabling CNN-based iris segmentation to be applied in any regular iris recognition systems. We explore the application of the Transformer in iris segmentation and propose a hybrid encoder that employs convolutional layers to extract local intensity features and the Transformer to capture long-range associative information. For decoding, we adopt a novel Multi-Head Dilated Attention to exploit the multi-scale contextual information by gating mechanism, thus emphasizing the important features and rendering powerful representations. Inspired by the consistent class characteristics of iris, we further devise a Pyramid Center-Aware Module to capture the global structural context of iris from a categorical perspective to improve performance. Experimental results show that our method, with fewer parameters than previous approaches, achieves competitive or new state-of-the-art performance in both iris segmentation and localization on three challenging iris datasets. The number of patients with nonalcoholic fatty liver is increasing. Liver fat quantification is the most reliable indicator for the diagnosis of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, and it is of great value for the early diagnosis and condition monitoring of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. Therefore, it is of great significance to quantitatively analyze liver fat. In this work, we utilize the superpixel segmentation method based on depth neural network to preprocess the MRI image, we can simplify the representation of the image and obtain good organ boundary information. In addition, we also understand the popular involution operator and improve it through combining the medical image segmentation model u-net to obtain a better region of interest. The segmentation accuracy of the proposed method is 1.82 percentage points higher than that of u-net model. On this basis, the proton density and fat fraction of liver are calculated by medical formula, achieving the sequencing measurement of liver fat. The experimental results show that the proposed method is efficient and feasible. © 2022 IEEE.

Lymphoma is a malignant tumor, and diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) is the most common type of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. Due to its biological characteristics, surgical treatment is difficult. The main treatment for DLBCL is chemotherapy, with the R-CHOP regimen being the most common. The vast majority of patients require lifelong treatment. Myelosuppression during chemotherapy is the most common adverse reaction in DLBCL patients and directly affects the progress of chemotherapy. Accurately predicting whether patients need early intervention before chemotherapy can greatly improve their prognosis. In this paper, we propose a neural network that uses PET/CT images of subcutaneous adipose tissue before treatment to predict myelosuppression in DLBCL patients. The model achieves a classification accuracy of 93.57%. This indicates that the growth distribution pattern and metabolic characteristics of adipose tissue are important for DLBCL patients. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2024.

Do We Need an Encoder-Decoder to Model Dynamical Systems on Networks?

As deep learning gains popularity in modelling dynamical systems, we expose an underappreciated misunderstanding relevant to modelling dynamics on networks. Strongly influenced by graph neural networks, latent vertex embeddings are naturally adopted in many neural dynamical network models. However, we show that embeddings tend to induce a model that fits observations well but simultaneously has incorrect dynamical behaviours. Recognising that previous studies narrowly focus on short-term predictions during the transient phase of a flow, we propose three tests for correct long-term behaviour, and illustrate how an embedding-based dynamical model fails these tests, and analyse the causes, particularly through the lens of topological conjugacy. In doing so, we show that the difficulties can be avoided by not using embedding. We propose a simple embedding-free alternative based on parametrising two additive vector-field components. Through extensive experiments, we verify that the proposed model can reliably recover a broad class of dynamics on different network topologies from time series data. © 2023, CC BY.

Automating Discussion Structure Re-Organization for Github Issues

As a popular social code hosting platform, GitHub encourages developers to discuss and leave opinions on issues for better repository development and closer team collaboration. However, popular issues can be bloated over the time, in particular, the linear format of GitHub issue discussions makes it difficult for developers to organize and extract useful information. For a better understanding of GitHub issue discussions, we first conduct an empirical study. Among the 14 most-starred repositories, we notice that 16,740 issues contain more than 10 comments. Then, more commented issue discussions refer to additional repository contributions and draw more developer attention. Hence, we narrow our perspective to the issue discussions with more than 10 comments. For 50.29% of these popular discussions, the topics of content are subject to change explicitly, and more than 36% of consecutive comment pairs do not host response relationships. In addition, just 40% of the comments on GitHub use the @ or quoting functions when commenting on other people's comments, but these functions are not only used for responding, but also for referencing, informing others, etc. Based on these results, these popular discussions suffer from intertwined content of various topics and ambiguous response linkage. To mitigate the situation, we propose a new approach IRA to automatically re-organize GitHub issue discussions, aiming at converting an issue discussion with the linear structure into a discussion tree with key information. The experimental results show that our approach outperforms other baselines, and achieves an average improvement of 19.97%, 14,25% on metrics of ACC and F1-score in the task of predicting response relationships, as well as gets 15.78%, 51.72%, 26.92%, 21.03%, 22.08%, 25.59% improvement in terms of parent accuracy, Variation of Information, One-to-One Overlap, and all Exact Match metrics in the re-organizing task. Drug-Drug Interaction (DDI) prediction task is helpful for better-understanding drugs. In this paper, we propose a novel drug-drug interaction prediction model based on line subgraph generation strategy, named DDI-LSG model. Our DDI-LSG model consists of three main parts which include drug relation graph construction, line subgraph generation strategy, and graph-level classification. To consider more relationships among drugs, we propose a node feature-enhancing method to encode drug features in drug relation graph construction process. To consider drugs and DDI as equivalent factors of our DDI-LSG model, we introduce line graph transformation to integrate DDI with drug feature enhancing vector. Combining Jaccard similarity with cosine similarity, we propose a line subgraph generation strategy to evaluate node relation and extract key structures around target DDI in the line graph. Then, we reformulate the DDI prediction task into a graph-level classification task for the line subgraph of the target DDI. Therefore, in the final part of our DDI-LSG model, we use a graph-level classifier to classify the line subgraphs. Our DDI-LSG model outperforms better experiment results than baselines. Ablation results have validated the node feature enhancing method and line subgraph generation strategy. © 2023 IEEE.
