An integration of satellites and terrestrial networks is crucial for enhancing performance of next generation communication systems. However, the networks are hindered by the long-distance path loss and security risks in dense urban environments. In this work, we propose a satellite-terrestrial covert communication system assisted by the aerial active simultaneous transmitting and reflecting reconfigurable intelligent surface (AASTAR-RIS) to improve the channel capacity while ensuring the transmission covertness. Specifically, we first derive the minimal detection error probability (DEP) under the worst condition that the Warden has perfect channel state information (CSI). Then, we formulate an AASTAR-RIS-assisted satellite-terrestrial covert communication optimization problem (ASCCOP) to maximize the sum of the fair channel capacity for all ground users while meeting the strict covert constraint, by jointly optimizing the trajectory and active beamforming of the AASTAR-RIS. Due to the challenges posed by the complex and high-dimensional state-action spaces as well as the need for efficient exploration in dynamic environments, we propose a generative deterministic policy gradient (GDPG) algorithm, which is a generative deep reinforcement learning (DRL) method to solve the ASCCOP. Concretely, the generative diffusion model (GDM) is utilized as the policy representation of the algorithm to enhance the exploration process by generating diverse and high-quality samples through a series of denoising steps. Moreover, we incorporate an action gradient mechanism to accomplish the policy improvement of the algorithm, which refines the better state-action pairs through the gradient ascent. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed approach significantly outperforms important benchmarks, and also validate the performance and practicality under different algorithm parameters and environment settings. Bounding-box deep calibration for high performance face detection

Modern convolutional neural networks (CNNs)‐based face detectors have achieved tremendous strides due to large annotated datasets. However, misaligned results with high detection confidence but low localization accuracy restrict the further improvement of detection performance. In this paper, the authors first predict high confidence detection results on the training set itself. Surprisingly, a considerable part of them exist in the same misalignment problem. Then, the authors carefully examine these cases and point out that annotation misalignment is the main reason. Later, a comprehensive discussion is given for the replacement rationality between predicted and annotated bounding‐boxes. Finally, the authors propose a novel Bounding‐Box Deep Calibration (BDC) method to reasonably replace misaligned annotations with model predicted bounding‐boxes and offer calibrated annotations for the training set. Extensive experiments on multiple detectors and two popular benchmark datasets show the effectiveness of BDC on improving models' precision and recall rate, without adding extra inference time and memory consumption. Our simple and effective method provides a general strategy for improving face detection, especially for light‐weight detectors in real‐time situations. © 2021, CC BY.

Multi-focus image fusion based on fully convolutional networks

We propose a multi-focus image fusion method, in which a fully convolutional network for focus detection(FD-FCN) is constructed. To obtain more precise focus detection maps, we propose to add skip layers in the network to make both detailed and abstract visual information available when using FD-FCN to generate maps. A new training dataset for the proposed network is constructed based on dataset CIFAR-10. The image fusion algorithm using FD-FCN contains three steps: focus maps are obtained using FD-FCN, decision map generation occurs by applying a morphological process on the focus maps, and image fusion occurs using a decision map. We carry out several sets of experiments, and both subjective and objective assessments demonstrate the superiority of the proposed fusion method to state-of-the-art algorithms.

In recent years, the scientific community has become increasingly interested on peptides with non-canonical amino acids due to their superior stability and resistance to proteolytic degradation. These peptides present promising modifications to biological, pharmacological, and physiochemical attributes in both endogenous and engineered peptides. Notwithstanding their considerable advantages, the scientific community exhibits a conspicuous absence of an effective pre-trained model adept at distilling feature representations from such complex peptide sequences. We herein propose PepLand, a novel pre-training architecture for representation and property analysis of peptides spanning both canonical and non-canonical amino acids. In essence, PepLand leverages a comprehensive multi-view heterogeneous graph neural network tailored to unveil the subtle structural representations of peptides. Empirical validations underscore PepLand's effectiveness across an array of peptide property predictions, encompassing protein-protein interactions, permeability, solubility, and synthesizability. The rigorous evaluation confirms PepLand's unparalleled capability in capturing salient synthetic peptide features, thereby laying a robust foundation for transformative advances in peptide-centric research domains. Due to flexibility and low-cost, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are increasingly crucial for enhancing coverage and functionality of wireless networks. However, incorporating UAVs into next-generation wireless communication systems poses significant challenges, particularly in sustaining high-rate and long-range secure communications against eavesdropping attacks. In this work, we consider a UAV swarm-enabled secure surveillance network system, where a UAV swarm forms a virtual antenna array to transmit sensitive surveillance data to a remote base station (RBS) via collaborative beamforming (CB) so as to resist mobile eavesdroppers. Specifically, we formulate an aerial secure communication and energy efficiency multi-objective optimization problem (ASCEE-MOP) to maximize the secrecy rate of the system and to minimize the flight energy consumption of the UAV swarm. To address the non-convex, NP-hard and dynamic ASCEE-MOP, we propose a generative diffusion model-enabled twin delayed deep deterministic policy gradient (GDMTD3) method. Specifically, GDMTD3 leverages an innovative application of diffusion models to determine optimal excitation current weights and position decisions of UAVs. The diffusion models can better capture the complex dynamics and the trade-off of the ASCEE-MOP, thereby yielding promising solutions. Simulation results highlight the superior performance of the proposed approach compared with traditional deployment strategies and some other deep reinforcement learning (DRL) benchmarks. Moreover, performance analysis under various parameter settings of GDMTD3 and different numbers of UAVs verifies the robustness of the proposed approach. Copyright © 2024, The Authors. Document-Level Relation Extraction with Entity Type Constraints

Long-tail problem and multi-label problem are two commonly encountered challenges in document-level relation extraction task. Current efforts are concerned with enhancing the representations of entity pairs through Transformer or document graphs, which cannot tackle the above challenges well. Relation correlations are a potential solution, which allows head relations to assist in the training of tail ones by transferring correlation knowledge between them, and can measure the semantic distance between relations to assist the classifier in assigning multiple semantically similar relations to multi-label instances. This paper proposes to learn relation correlations from both global and local views using entity type constraints, which means that the subject-object entity types limit the scope of possible relations. Globally, we statistically construct the Type-constrained Graph between entity types and relations, which formulates all possible subject/object types for each relation. Different relations are connected by common entity types, reflecting the desired correlations. Locally, given an entity pair, the classification probability of relations matching its entity types should be greater than those unmatched. Therefore, the Type-constrained Loss is proposed to make the matched relations have greater probabilities. Detailed experiments are conducted on DocRED and DWIE datasets, and our model significantly outperforms baselines under long-tail and multi-label setups. © 2024, The Authors. All rights reserved.

When Federated Recommendation Meets Cold-Start Problem: Separating Item Attributes and User Interactions

Federated recommendation systems usually trains a global model on the server without direct access to users’ private data on their own devices. However, this separation of the recommendation model and users’ private data poses a challenge in providing quality service, particularly when it comes to new items, namely cold-start recommendations in federated settings. This paper introduces a novel method called Item-aligned Federated Aggregation (IFedRec) to address this challenge. It is the first research work in federated recommendation to specifically study the cold-start scenario. The proposed method learns two sets of item representations by leveraging item attributes and interaction records simultaneously. Additionally, an item representation alignment mechanism is designed to align two item representations and learn the meta attribute network at the server within a federated learning framework. Experiments on four benchmark datasets demonstrate IFedRec’s superior performance for cold-start scenarios. Furthermore, we also verify IFedRec owns good robustness when the system faces limited client participation and noise injection, which brings promising practical application potential in privacy-protection enhanced federated recommendation systems. Practical two-party privacy-preserving neural network based on secret sharing

Neural networks, with the capability to provide efficient predictive models, have been widely used in medical, financial, and other fields, bringing great convenience to our lives. However, the high accuracy of the model requires a large amount of data from multiple parties, raising public concerns about privacy. Privacy-preserving neural network based on multi-party computation is one of the current methods used to provide model training and inference under the premise of solving data privacy. In this study, we propose a new two-party privacy-preserving neural network training and inference framework in which privacy data is distributed to two non-colluding servers. We construct a preprocessing protocol for mask generation, support and realize secret sharing comparison on 2PC, and propose a new method to further reduce the communication rounds. Based on the comparison protocol, we construct building blocks such as division and exponential, and realize the process of training and inference that no longer needs to convert between different types of secret sharings and is entirely based on arithmetic secret sharing. Compared with the previous works, our work obtains higher accuracy, which is very close to that of plaintext training. While the accuracy has been improved, the runtime is reduced, considering the online phase, our work is 5× faster than SecureML, 4.32-5.75× faster than SecureNN, and is very close to the current optimal 3PC implementation, FALCON. For secure inference, as far as known knowledge is concerned, we should be the current optimal 2PC implementation, which is 4-358× faster than other works. © 2021, CC BY.

A Task Processing Efficiency Improvement Scheme Based on Cloud-Edge Architecture in Dense computing Environments

As cloud-edge architecture combines low latency and high-performance computing, it has a wider range of application scenarios. Considering that, how to reasonably allocate tasks to the edge cloud or the central cloud and how to select appropriate virtual machines (VMs) for tasks are two key aspects affecting the efficiency of cloud-edge architecture. For the former, the ARDT algorithm is proposed, which dynamically adjusts the optimal threshold by predicting the number of real-time edge-end devices. For the latter, we design the DBMR algorithm based on the Max-Fit algorithm, in which we propose a structure of blocking to reduce the time complexity of the original algorithm from O(n2) to O(n(n-m)). Experimental results show that the ARDT-DBMR algorithm optimizes the average processing time and task failure rate by 30%-40% compared with the baseline algorithms and other advanced algorithms and significantly improves the problem of abnormal fluctuations in VM utilization in dense computing environments. © 2022, The Authors. SSBM: A Signed Stochastic Block Model for Multiple Structure Discovery in Large-Scale Exploratory Signed Networks

Signed network structure discovery has received extensive attention and has become a research focus in the field of network science. However, most of the existing studies are focused on the networks with a single structure, e.g., community or bipartite, while ignoring multiple structures, e.g., the coexistence of community and bipartite structures. Furthermore, existing studies were faced with challenge regarding large-scale signed networks due to their high time complexity, especially when determining the number of clusters in the observed network without any prior knowledge. In view of this, we propose a mathematically principled method for signed network multiple structure discovery named the Signed Stochastic Block Model (SSBM). The SSBM can capture the multiple structures contained in signed networks, e.g., community, bipartite, and coexistence of them, by adopting a probabilistic model. Moreover, by integrating the minimum message length (MML) criterion and component-wise EM (CEM) algorithm, a scalable learning algorithm that has the ability of model selection is proposed to handle large-scale signed networks. By comparing state-of-the-art methods on synthetic and realworld signed networks, extensive experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness and efficiency of SSBM in discovering large-scale exploratory signed networks with multiple structures.
