TC-GAT: Graph Attention Network for Temporal Causality Discovery

The present study explores the intricacies of causal relationship extraction, a vital component in the pursuit of causality knowledge. Causality is frequently intertwined with temporal elements, as the progression from cause to effect is not instantaneous but rather ensconced in a temporal dimension. Thus, the extraction of temporal causality holds paramount significance in the field. In light of this, we propose a method for extracting causality from the text that integrates both temporal and causal relations, with a particular focus on the time aspect. To this end, we first compile a dataset that encompasses temporal relationships. Subsequently, we present a novel model, TC-GAT, which employs a graph attention mechanism to assign weights to the temporal relationships and leverages a causal knowledge graph to determine the adjacency matrix. Additionally, we implement an equilibrium mechanism to regulate the interplay between temporal and causal relations. Our experiments demonstrate that our proposed method significantly surpasses baseline models in the task of causality extraction. Copyright © 2023, The Authors. All rights reserved.

With the recent success of large language models, particularly foundation models with generalization abilities, applying foundation models for recommendations becomes a new paradigm to improve existing recommendation systems. It becomes a new open challenge to enable the foundation model to capture user preference changes in a timely manner with reasonable communication and computation costs while preserving privacy. This paper proposes a novel federated adaptation mechanism to enhance the foundation model-based recommendation system in a privacy-preserving manner. Specifically, each client will learn a lightweight personalized adapter using its private data. The adapter then collaborates with pre-trained foundation models to provide recommendation service efficiently with fine-grained manners. Importantly, users’ private behavioral data remains secure as it is not shared with the server. This data localization-based privacy preservation is embodied via the federated learning framework. The model can ensure that shared knowledge is incorporated into all adapters while simultaneously preserving each user’s personal preferences. Microvascular invasion (MVI) in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is of great guiding significance for the formulating treatment strategies and accessing the prognosis before the surgery. However, in traditional medicine, the gold standard for the diagnosis of MVI is obtained by examining pathological images which can only be obtained by sampling and sectioning tumors after surgery. At this time, MVI results have lost the timeliness of guiding tumor resection surgery. In order to solve this problem, existing studies began to use deep learning-based methods for preoperative prediction of MVI using non-invasive imaging. Most of these methods adopt the fusion methods of multi-sequence images to predict MVI, but fail to make full use of the characteristics of multiply sequences as prior knowledge to combine into the model, resulting in no further improvement of prediction performance. So we propose a multi-sequence image difference and correlation deep learning model. The model can extract the difference and correlation information between sequences from different scales and combine them into the model. To validate proposed model, we collected a data set consists of 120 HCC patients, including 50 MVI-positive patients. Compared with existing studies, our method has greatly improved in all evaluation metrics. © 2022 IEEE.

Grasping the intricacies of human motion, which involve perceiving spatio-temporal dependence and multi-scale effects, is essential for predicting human motion. While humans inherently possess the requisite skills to navigate this issue, it proves to be markedly more challenging for machines to emulate. To bridge the gap, we propose the Human-like Vision and Inference System (HVIS) for human motion prediction, which is designed to emulate human observation and forecast future movements. HVIS comprises two components: the human-like vision encode (HVE) module and the human-like motion inference (HMI) module. The HVE module mimics and refines the human visual process, incorporating a retina-analog component that captures spatiotemporal information separately to avoid unnecessary crosstalk. Additionally, a visual cortex-analogy component is designed to hierarchically extract and treat complex motion features, focusing on both global and local features of human poses. The HMI is employed to simulate the multi-stage learning model of the human brain. The spontaneous learning network simulates the neuronal fracture generation process for the adversarial generation of future motions. Subsequently, the deliberate learning network is optimized for hard-to-train joints to prevent misleading learning. Experimental results demonstrate that our method achieves new state-of-the-art performance, significantly outperforming existing methods by 19.8% on Human3.6M, 15.7% on CMU Mocap, and 11.1% on G3D. © 2025, CC BY.

Although several surveys on Neural Combinatorial Optimization (NCO) solvers specifically designed to solve Vehicle Routing Problems (VRPs) have been conducted. These existing surveys did not cover the state-of-the-art (SOTA) NCO solvers emerged recently. More importantly, to provide a comprehensive taxonomy of NCO solvers with up-to-date coverage, based on our thorough review of relevant publications and preprints, we divide all NCO solvers into four distinct categories, namely Learning to Construct, Learning to Improve, Learning to Predict-Once, and Learning to Predict-Multiplicity solvers. Subsequently, we present the inadequacies of the SOTA solvers, including poor generalization, incapability to solve large-scale VRPs, inability to address most types of VRP variants simultaneously, and difficulty in comparing these NCO solvers with the conventional Operations Research algorithms. Simultaneously, we propose promising and viable directions to overcome these inadequacies. In addition, we compare the performance of representative NCO solvers from the Reinforcement, Supervised, and Unsupervised Learning paradigms across both small- and large-scale VRPs. Finally, following the proposed taxonomy, we provide an accompanying web page as a live repository for NCO solvers. Image super-resolution is essential for a variety of applications such as medical imaging,surveillance imaging,and satellite imaging,among ***,the most popular color image super-resolution is performed in each color channel *** this paper,we show that the super-resolution quality can be further enhanced by exploiting the cross-channel *** by the High-Quality Linear Interpolation(HQLI)demosaicking algorithm by Malvar et al.,we design an image super-resolution scheme that integrates intra-channel interpolation with cross-channel details by isotropic linear *** its simplicity,our super-resolution method achieves the accuracy comparable with the existing fastest state-of-the-art super-resolution algorithm at 20 times faster *** is well applicable to applications that adopt traditional interpolations,for improved visual quality at trivial computation *** comparative study verifies the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed super-resolution algorithm.

False claims that have been previously fact-checked can still spread on social media. To mitigate their continual spread, detecting previously fact-checked claims is indispensable. Given a claim, existing works retrieve fact-checking articles (FC-articles) for detection and focus on reranking candidate articles in the typical two-stage retrieval framework. However, their performance may be limited as they ignore the following characteristics of FC-articles: (1) claims are often quoted to describe the checked events, providing lexical information besides semantics;and (2) sentence templates to introduce or debunk claims are common across articles, providing pattern information. In this paper, we propose a novel reranker, MTM (Memoryenhanced Transformers for Matching), to rank FC-articles using key sentences selected using event (lexical and semantic) and pattern information. For event information, we propose to finetune the Transformer with regression of ROUGE. For pattern information, we generate pattern vectors as a memory bank to match with the parts containing patterns. By fusing event and pattern information, we select key sentences to represent an article and then predict if the article fact-checks the given claim using the claim, key sentences, and patterns. Experiments on two real-world datasets show that MTM outperforms existing methods. Human evaluation proves that MTM can capture key sentences for explanations. Nighttime traffic object detection via adaptively integrating event and frame domains

Intelligent perception is crucial in Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS), with vision cameras as critical components. However, traditional RGB cameras exhibit a significant decline in performance when capturing nighttime traffic scenes, limiting their effectiveness in supporting ITS. In contrast, event cameras possess a high dynamic range (140 dB vs. 60 dB for traditional cameras), enabling them to overcome frame degradation in low-light conditions. Recently, multimodal learning paradigms have made substantial progress in various vision tasks, such as image-text retrieval. Motivated by this progress, we propose an adaptive selection and fusion detection method that leverages both event and RGB frame domains to optimize nighttime traffic object detection jointly. To address the challenge of unbalanced multimodal data fusion, we design a learnable adaptive selection and fusion module. This module performs feature ranking and fusion in the channel dimension, allowing efficient multimodal fusion. Additionally, we construct a novel multi-level feature pyramid network based on multimodal attention fusion. This network extracts potential features to enhance robustness in detecting nighttime traffic objects. Furthermore, we curate a dataset for nighttime traffic scenarios comprising RGB frames and corresponding event streams. Through experiments, we demonstrate that our proposed method outperforms current state-of-the-art techniques in event-based, frame-based, and event and frame fusion methods. This highlights the effectiveness of integrating the event and frame domains in enhancing nighttime traffic object detection. © 2023 The Authors

A Novel Local Search Algorithm Based on Connectivity Method and Vertex Penalty Mechanism for Minimum Weighted Connected Dominating Set Problem

The minimum weighted connected dominating set problem is a classical NP-hard problem with wide applications in practice. In this paper, an efficient local search algorithm is proposed to solve this problem. In this algorithm, firstly, an initial solution construction method based on greedy randomized adaptive strategy is adopted, which can balance the quality and the diversity of the initial solutions. Second, two new scoring functions, Ascore and Cscore, are proposed to increase the diversity of deleted vertices. Third, a new connectivity method is proposed so that the algorithm no longer relies on the shortest path between two connected components. Fourth, a vertex penalty mechanism is introduced, which helps the algorithm to jump out of the local optimum effectively. Fifth, two scoring functions, Ascore and Cscore, are combined with the vertex penalty mechanism to propose an effective vertex selection method, which helps the algorithm to select suitable vertices to be added to or removed from the current candidate solution. Finally, the propsoed local search algorithm is compared with seven state-of-the-art algorithms on three types of benchmark instances. The experimental results show that the algorithm exhibits better performance on these three types of classical benchmark instances. © 2024, The Authors. All rights reserved.
