With the prevalence of online review websites, large-scale data promote the necessity of focused analysis. This task aims to capture the information that is highly relevant to a specific aspect. However, the broad scope of the aspects of the various products makes this task overarching but challenging. A commonly used solution is to modify the topic models with additional information to capture the features for a specific aspect (referred to as a targeted aspect). However, the existing topic models, either perform the full analysis to capture features as many as possible or estimate the similarity to capture features as coherent as possible, overlook the fine-grained semantic relations between the features, resulting in the captured features coarse and confusing. In this paper, we propose a novel Hierarchical Features-based Topic Model (HFTM) to extract targeted aspects from online reviews, then to capture the aspect-specific features. Specifically, our model can not only capture the direct features posing target-to-feature semantics but also capture the latent features posing feature-to-feature semantics. The experiments conducted on real-world datasets demonstrate that HFTMl outperforms the state-of-the-art baselines in terms of both aspect extraction and document classification. © 2021 - IOS Press. Collaboration and Controversy Among Experts: Rumor Early Detection by Tuning a Comment Generator

Over the past decade, social media platforms have been key in spreading rumors, leading to significant negative impacts. To counter this, the community has developed various Rumor Detection (RD) algorithms to automatically identify them using user comments as evidence. However, these RD methods often fail in the early stages of rumor propagation when only limited user comments are available, leading the community to focus on a more challenging topic named Rumor Early Detection (RED). Typically, existing RED methods learn from limited semantics in early comments. However, our preliminary experiment reveals that the RED models always perform best when the number of training and test comments is consistently extensive. This inspires us to address the RED issue by generating more human-like comments to support this hypothesis. To implement this idea, we tune a comment generator by simulating expert collaboration and controversy and propose a new RED framework named CameRed. Specifically, we integrate a mixture-of-expert structure into a generative language model and present a novel routing network for expert collaboration. Additionally, we synthesize a knowledgeable dataset and design an adversarial learning strategy to align the style of generated comments with real-world comments. We further integrate generated and original comments with a mutual controversy fusion module. Experimental results show that CameRed outperforms state-of-the-art RED baseline models and generation methods, demonstrating its effectiveness. Copyright © 2025, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Divergent Projection Analysis for Unsupervised Dimensionality Reduction

Principal component analysis (PCA) has been extended to a series of classical methods in dimensionality reduction for unsu¬pervised learning. However, the differences among the projected data samples may not be sufficient by PCA, causing problems both in data visualization and recognition. Though some nonlinear dimensionality reduction methods have been proposed to preserve the samples’ differences, their nonlinear mappings hide the relationships among the data features, e.g., Isometric mapping (Isomap) and Locally Linear Embedding (LLE). In this paper, we propose a linear dimensionality reduction method, called Divergent Projection Analysis (DPA), to preserve the largest differences among the samples. Our DPA projects the sam¬ples into a low-dimensional space such that any two projected samples have a certain distance, resulting in solving a nonconvex optimization problem. The nonconvex problem is solved by the subgradient descent algorithm and particle swarm optimiza¬tion algorithm, and their solution qualities are compared in the experiments. Experiments on a synthetic dataset and three face recognition problems confirm the effectiveness of the proposed method compared with other state-of-the-art methods.

DNA methylation is a critical epigenetic modification that plays a central role in gene regulation, cellular differentiation, and the development of various diseases, including cancers. Aberrant methylation patterns have emerged as both biomarkers and mechanistic drivers in pathogenesis, underscoring the urgent need for precise and efficient predictive tools. Although some deep learning techniques have advanced methylation prediction, most existing models are trained independently on single-species datasets. This species-specific approach limits efficiency because each model can only handle one dataset at a time, often at the expense of predictive performance. Additionally, the state-of-the-art deep learning models tend to have enormous parameter counts and computational overhead, making them impractical for integration into local offline software applications. To overcome these challenges, we propose AutoFE-Pointer, a lightweight and novel framework that harnesses an improved softened pointer network to dynamically extract and weight features from diverse DNA sequences. AutoFE-Pointer is designed to simultaneously process 17 different benchmark datasets spanning multiple species, achieving superior performance compared to models that are trained individually on single-species data. In doing so, it not only offers state-of-the-art predictive accuracy and robust cross-species generalization but also significantly reduces computational demands, facilitating its deployment in local offline environments. This breakthrough represents a significant advancement in the field of epigenetic modeling and computational biology. © 2025

Are Your Apps Accessible? A GCN-based Accessibility Checker for Low Vision Users

Context: Accessibility issues (e.g., small size and narrow interval) in mobile applications (apps) lead to obstacles for billions of low vision users in interacting with Graphical User Interfaces (GUIs). Although GUI accessibility scanning tools exist, most of them perform rule-based check relying on complex GUI hierarchies. This might make them detect invisible redundant information, cannot handle small deviations, omit similar components, and is hard to extend. Objective: In this paper, we propose a novel approach, named ALVIN (Accessibility Checker for Low Vision), which represents the GUI as a graph and adopts the Graph Convolutional Neural Networks (GCN) to label inaccessible components. Method: ALVIN removes invisible views to prevent detecting redundancy and uses annotations from low vision users to handle small deviations. Also, the GCN model could consider the relations between GUI components, connecting similar components and reducing the possibility of omission. ALVIN only requires users to annotate the relevant dataset when detecting new kinds of issues. Results: Our experiments on 48 apps demonstrate the effectiveness of ALVIN, with precision of 83.5%, recall of 78.9%, and F1-score of 81.2%, outperforming baseline methods. In RQ2, the usefulness is verified through 20 issues submitted to open-source apps. The RQ3 also illustrates the GCN model is better than other models. Conclusion: To summarize, our proposed approach can effectively detect accessibility issues in GUIs for low vision users, thereby guiding developers in fixing them efficiently. Recent developments in unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and mobile edge computing (MEC) have provided users with flexible and resilient computing services. However, meeting the computing-intensive and latency-sensitive demands of users poses a significant challenge due to the limited resources of UAVs. To address this challenge, we present a multi-objective optimization approach for multi-UAV-assisted MEC systems. First, we formulate a multi-objective optimization problem aiming at minimizing the total task completion delay, reducing the total UAV energy consumption, and maximizing the total amount of offloaded tasks by jointly optimizing task offloading, computation resource allocation, and UAV trajectory control. Since the problem is a mixed-integer non-linear programming (MINLP) and NP-hard problem which is challenging, we propose a joint task offloading, computation resource allocation, and UAV trajectory control (JTORATC) approach to solve the problem. However, since the decision variables of task offloading, computation resource allocation, and UAV trajectory control are coupled with each other, the original problem is split into three sub-problems, i.e., task offloading, computation resource allocation, and UAV trajectory control, which are solved individually to obtain the corresponding decisions. Moreover, the sub-problem of task offloading is solved by using distributed splitting and threshold rounding methods, the sub-problem of computation resource allocation is solved by adopting the Karush-Kuhn-Tucker (KKT) method, and the sub-problem of UAV trajectory control is solved by employing the successive convex approximation (SCA) method. Don’t Confuse! Redrawing GUI Navigation Flow in Mobile Apps for Visually Impaired Users

Mobile applications (apps) are integral to our daily lives, offering diverse services and functionalities. They enable sighted users to access information coherently in an extremely convenient manner. However, it remains unclear if visually impaired users, who rely solely on the screen readers (e.g., Talkback) to navigate and access app information, can do so in the correct and reasonable order. This may result in significant information bias and operational errors. Furthermore, in our preliminary exploration, we explained and clarified that the navigation sequence-related issues encountered by visually impaired users could be categorized into two types: unintuitive navigation sequence and unapparent focus switching. Considering these issues, in this work, we proposed a method named RGNF (Re-draw GUI Navigation Flow). It aimed to enhance the understandability and coherence of accessing the content of each component within the Graphical User Interface (GUI), together with assisting developers in creating well-designed GUI navigation flow (GNF). This method was inspired by the characteristics identified in our preliminary study, where visually impaired users expected navigation to be associated with close position and similar shape of GUI components that were read consecutively. Thus, our method relied on the principles derived from the Gestalt psychological model, aiming to group GUI components into different regions according to the laws of proximity and similarity, thereby redrawing the GNFs. To evaluate the effectiveness of our method, we calculated sequence similarity values before and after redrawing the GNF, and further employed the tools proposed by Alotaibi et al. to measure the reachability of GUI components. Our results demonstrated a substantial improvement in similarity (0.921) compared to the baseline (0.624), together with the reachability (90.31%) compared to the baseline GNF (74.35%). Modern convolutional neural networks (CNNs)‐based face detectors have achieved tremendous strides due to large annotated datasets. However, misaligned results with high detection confidence but low localization accuracy restrict the further improvement of detection performance. In this paper, the authors first predict high confidence detection results on the training set itself. Surprisingly, a considerable part of them exist in the same misalignment problem. Then, the authors carefully examine these cases and point out that annotation misalignment is the main reason. Later, a comprehensive discussion is given for the replacement rationality between predicted and annotated bounding‐boxes. Finally, the authors propose a novel Bounding‐Box Deep Calibration (BDC) method to reasonably replace misaligned annotations with model predicted bounding‐boxes and offer calibrated annotations for the training set. Extensive experiments on multiple detectors and two popular benchmark datasets show the effectiveness of BDC on improving models' precision and recall rate, without adding extra inference time and memory consumption. Our simple and effective method provides a general strategy for improving face detection, especially for light‐weight detectors in real‐time situations. © 2021, CC BY.

As cloud-edge architecture combines low latency and high-performance computing, it has a wider range of application scenarios. Considering that, how to reasonably allocate tasks to the edge cloud or the central cloud and how to select appropriate virtual machines (VMs) for tasks are two key aspects affecting the efficiency of cloud-edge architecture. For the former, the ARDT algorithm is proposed, which dynamically adjusts the optimal threshold by predicting the number of real-time edge-end devices. For the latter, we design the DBMR algorithm based on the Max-Fit algorithm, in which we propose a structure of blocking to reduce the time complexity of the original algorithm from O(n2) to O(n(n-m)). Experimental results show that the ARDT-DBMR algorithm optimizes the average processing time and task failure rate by 30%-40% compared with the baseline algorithms and other advanced algorithms and significantly improves the problem of abnormal fluctuations in VM utilization in dense computing environments. © 2022, The Authors.
