Recently biosensors based on silicon nanowire field-effect transistors (SiNW-FETs) have drawn huge amounts of attention, due to their ultra sensitivity, selectivity, label-free and real-time detection abilities. As people know more and more knowledge of the structure and function of nucleic acid molecules, DNA detection has gained importance increasingly. Here, we briefly summarize major fabrication methods in synthesising SiNW-FETs and selectively describe some applications of SiNW-FET biosensors in DNA detection over the past few years. Some key results from each article are summarized, involving the concept and mechanism behind each sensor, with the aim of stimulating more efforts in developing SiNW-FET biosensors for detecting DNA.

The electrical characteristic test of nanowires is important in nano-materials research. The metal-semiconductor junction that is fabricated with semiconductor nanowire and metal probe in electrical test system has impact on the test result directly, therefore it's necessary to study I-V characteristics of the metal-semiconductor(M-S) junction. Si, ZnO, GaN have been selected from multiple semiconductor materials. When they connected with tungsten probe, all of them formed Schottky barriers, but the relationships between current and voltage of the junctions are distinct. In the thesis, I-V curves of these M-S junctions are compared, and the best electrical performance of M-S junction is selected.

Uncalibrated visual servoing techniques based on the depth-independent interaction matrix framework have been proposed for the general 3D motion control of robot manipulators, which can simultaneously handle both the unknown intrinsic and extrinsic camera parameters. By extending the existing adaptive eye-in-hand visual servoing approach based on the depth-independent interaction matrix, in this paper, we propose an uncalibrated dynamic visual tracking approach for the eye-in-hand camera configuration by observing multiple feature points of a static object. The proposed approach can simultaneously handle the unknown camera parameters and the unknown 3D coordinates of the feature points, where a new adaptive law is developed to estimate these unknown parameters online. On the basis of nonlinear dynamics of robot manipulators, we also prove the asymptotic convergence of the image errors with the help of Lyapunov theory. To demonstrate the performance of the proposed approach, preliminary simulation results will be given by using a two-link planar robot manipulator.

Surface deformation of an object can be measured by digital shearography through non-contact measurement with a simple device. It is always difficult to remove the noise of the speckle interference. Consequently extracting phase from a single fringe pattern without carrier-frequency is complex. Based on gray extremum, an improved method for phase extraction is proposed by using the improved image binarization algorithm in this paper. Through comparing the average value of eight neighbourhood points around each pixel with threshold value, the quality of binary image can be improved, and then the skeleton line can be extracted. Finally a smooth extremum image can be obtained. Experimental results show that the proposed method is simple, convenient and reliable.

Tracking the same person across multiple cameras is an important task in multi-camera systems. It is also desirable to re-identify the individuals who have been previously seen with a single-camera. This paper addresses this problem by the re-identification of the same individual in two different datasets, which are both challenging situations from video surveillance system. In this paper, local descriptors are introduced for image description, and support vector machines are employed for high classification performance and so an efficient Bag of Features approach for image presentation. In this way, robustness against low resolution, occlusion and pose, viewpoint and illumination changes is achieved in a very fast way. We get promising results from the evaluation with situations where a number of individuals vary continuously from a multi-camera system.

The on-line and dynamic estimation algorithm for Rician fading channels in GSM-R networks is proposed, which is an expansion of local mean power estimation of Rayleigh fading channels. The proper length of statistical interval and required number of averaging samples are determined which are adaptive to different propagation environments. It takes advantage of the sampling signals and Rician fading parameters of last estimation to reduce measurement overhead. The performance of this method was evaluated by measurement experiment along the Beijing-Shanghai high-speed railway. When it is NLOS propagation, the required sampling intervals can be increased from 1.1λ in Lee's method to 3.7λ of the on-line and dynamic algorithm. And the sampling interval can be set up to 12λ although the length of statistical interval decreases when there is LOS signal, which can reduce the measurement overhead significantly. The algorithm can be applied in coverage assessment with lower measurement overhead, and in dynamic and adaptive allocation of wireless resource.

Hybrid electric vehicle techniques have been widely studied in recent years for their potential to significantly improve the fuel economy and reduce the emissions. In this paper, a hybrid energy management strategy is presented for a parallel hybrid vehicle. The proposed strategy incorporates a fuzzy logic controller to assess the amount of engine and motor's output torque and a charge sustaining scheme to ensure better battery's charge balance during the driving cycle. Finally, computer simulation works are carried out to evaluate the proposed energy management strategy. It was found that significant fuel consumption and emissions reduction could be achieved.
