Sliding spotlight mode is a widely used working mode for spaceborne synthetic aperture radar (SAR) systems. It can realize a higher azimuth resolution than the stripmap mode and a wider observation swath than the spotlight mode. For sliding spotlight SAR, due to the higher azimuth resolution, the accuracy of the Doppler parameters is of great importance since it affects the construction of the azimuth matching filters and further impacts the focusing quality of the final image. While most of the existing Doppler estimation methods are not applicable for sliding spotlight mode since they do not consider the azimuth spectrum aliasing problem. In this paper, we conduct a detailed analysis of the variation of azimuth time-frequency relationship during the azimuth preprocessing of the two-step focusing process for spaceborne sliding spotlight SAR. Based on the analysis, we propose a new Doppler parameter estimation method dedicated to azimuth preprocessing. We also present our experimental results of real data which can verify the effectiveness of our proposed method. © The Institution of Engineering & Technology 2023.

An inspection allocation algorithm based on different starting points and endurance capabilities of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) is proposed for the multi-UAVs forest inspection process. Firstly, the area map to be inspected is rasterized, and the distances between the starting points of each UAV and individual grid cells are computed, which will be used for area decomposition. Subsequently, an evaluation function is employed to allocate individual grid cells reasonably to each UAV. Then, the boundary lines of the allocated sub-regions are generated, by which the raster map is converted into an inspection map with continuous boundaries. This ultimately yields the sub-regions for inspection by each UAV. Simulation results demonstrate that this method effectively allocates the forest inspection area to the various UAVs in a rational manner. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2024.

Model predictive control with input disturbance and guaranteed Lyapunov stability for controller approximation

An approximation method that can lower the computational complexity is presented to reduce the processing time of model predictive control(MPC). The effects of the inaccurate inputs, which are caused by the approximation errors, are reflected as input disturbances and are considered in the design of the controller. The closed-loop system's stability is guaranteed by a restricted Lyapunov-based constraint and input constraints, ensuring that the states will be eventually bounded at a certain confidence *** to this paper, the effects of the bounded disturbance can be observed via a change in the stability region. The relationship between the regions of the normal and approximated systems is highlighted. The proposed MPC with input disturbance and guaranteed Lyapunov stability is employed in a chemical process,and the simulation results indicate the efficiency of the proposed method.

A chirped Fabry-Perot interferometric (CFPI) sensor based on two chirped $\mathbf{50}-\boldsymbol{\mu} \mathbf{m}$ fiber Bragg gratings is proposed in this paper. The sensing structure packaged with a Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) can balance wide dynamic range and high sensitivity. Combining miniaturized laser source and photodetector, it can achieve accurate detection of human vital signs conveniently. The promising results of heart pulse measurement in real time allow the sensor to be developed as wearable device for prevention and diagnosis of cardiovascular diseases.

Short-term load forecasting of buildings plays a key role in demand management, however, when dealing with massive data, the prevalent practice of training and testing the system as a whole overlooks pattern variations inside data and potentially limits predictive performance. To address this issue, this paper proposes an ensemble deep random vector functional link (edRVFL) model that combines adaptive ensemble clustering and dynamic weighting strategy for load forecasting of an industrial building. Firstly, the adaptive ensemble clustering that combines ordering points to identify the clustering structure and K nearest neighbor is employed to determine the electricity load usage patterns. Subsequently, the improved particle swarm optimization algorithm is applied to adjust the weights of load curves in different typical day scenarios. Finally, a dynamic weighting strategy is designed to dynamically assign model weights to two clusters, where one matches the type of predicted load pattern for the day being forecasted and another for the cluster of the previous day. The experiment in a real building verifies the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm, which has higher prediction accuracy than other comparison algorithms including one-week interval and different ensemble clustering. © 2024 IEEE.

Pedestrian trajectory prediction plays a pivotal role in ensuring the safety and efficiency of various applications, including autonomous vehicles and traffic management systems. This paper proposes a novel method for pedestrian trajectory prediction, called multi-stage goal-driven network (MGNet). Diverging from prior approaches relying on stepwise recursive prediction and the singular forecasting of a long-term goal, MGNet directs trajectory generation by forecasting intermediate stage goals, thereby reducing prediction errors. The network comprises three main components: a conditional variational autoencoder (CVAE), an attention module, and a multi-stage goal evaluator. Trajectories are encoded using conditional variational autoencoders to acquire knowledge about the approximate distribution of pedestrians' future trajectories, and combined with an attention mechanism to capture the temporal dependency between trajectory sequences. The pivotal module is the multi-stage goal evaluator, which utilizes the encoded feature vectors to predict intermediate goals, effectively minimizing cumulative errors in the recursive inference process. The effectiveness of MGNet is demonstrated through comprehensive experiments on the JAAD and PIE datasets. Comparative evaluations against state-of-the-art algorithms reveal significant performance improvements achieved by our proposed method. © 2024 IEEE.

Analysis of On-policy Policy Gradient Methods under the Distribution Mismatch

Policy gradient methods are one of the most successful methods for solving challenging reinforcement learning problems. However, despite their empirical successes, many SOTA policy gradient algorithms for discounted problems deviate from the theoretical policy gradient theorem due to the existence of a distribution mismatch. In this work, we analyze the impact of this mismatch on the policy gradient methods. Specifically, we first show that in the case of tabular parameterizations, the methods under the mismatch remain globally optimal. Then, we extend this analysis to more general parameterizations by leveraging the theory of biased stochastic gradient descent. Our findings offer new insights into the robustness of policy gradient methods as well as the gap between theoretical foundations and practical implementations. © 2025, CC BY.

An E-plane cylindrical dielectric resonator antenna (DRA) array with a dielectric superstrate is investigated for wide-angle scanning applications. Each slot-coupled DRA element operates at its fundamental HEM11δ mode. The dielectric superstrate is loaded above the DRA array. By adjusting its dimension and position properly, the beamwidth of the center active element pattern is significantly broadened. Meanwhile, the mutual coupling effect among various elements is effectively reduced. Both the wide-beam element pattern and reduced mutual coupling level contribute to the improvement of the array beam-steering capability. Finally, our proposed E-plane DRA array has a wide range of ±80° with a scan loss of 3 dB. © 2023 IEEE.

Walking with a load brings a significant burden to human shoulders,resulting in increasing metabolic energy consumption and the risk of skeleton and muscle *** backpack has been widely conducted for load-bearing walking,but exiting time-dependent control methods and event-based control methods are unable to exploit the characteristics of human gait *** this case,a time-independent control(TIC) method capable of eliminating the time dependence and adapting to variable speed is *** on the dynamical model of human-backpack system,an assistance profile along with the parameter optimization method are introduced which allows the backpack to reduce the burden on human shoulders during load-bearing *** the simulation evaluation,the proposed TIC method is compared with an impedance controller based time-dependent method and a locked backpack,under both constant speed and variable speed *** results demonstrates that the TIC case achieves an 89.1% reduction in dynamic load on shoulder under the condition of constant speed and a 78.2% reduction under the condition of variable speed,compared with the LOCKED case.
