Edge-Assisted Flexible Platooning of Connected and Automated Vehicles Under Traffic Anomaly

The platooning of connected and automated vehicles (CAVs) has the great potential to significantly improve travel experience in terms of safety, comfortableness, and energy efficiency. However, constrained by sensing range and prediction accuracy, the performance of CAV platoon can not be guaranteed in the scenario of mixed traffic consisting of CAVs and human-driven vehicles (HDVs). This is not only due to the uncertainty of HDVs but also related to the occurrence of various traffic anomalies, such as emergency braking and accidents. In this paper, we aim to investigate an efficient control strategy to guarantee the operation of the platoon in mixed traffic, especially in the case of traffic anomalies. To tackle the problem, an edge-assisted platoon control strategy, called E-CACC, is proposed. First, an error-aware flexible tracking policy is designed to adapt to HDV uncertainties and speed prediction errors. Based on the tracking policy, a zone model predictive control (ZMPC) method is then designed to guarantee travel safety and avoid undesired acceleration. Further, a coordination strategy of CAV platoon and roadside unit (RSU) is proposed to prevent the platoon from potential collision in the case of traffic anomalies, where an event-based communication trigger is designed to determine whether and when the platoon establishes communication links with RSU to acquire exogenous sensing data of anomaly segment. Finally, the evaluation results illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed method in improving travel safety and comfortableness. © 1967-2012 IEEE.

In this paper, we discuss the commonly used pilot-symbol-assisted-modulation (PSAM) assisted transmission and its corresponding frame optimization problem over Rician fading channel. Specifically, we design a generalized PSAM (G-PSAM) format based on the standard PSAM (S-PSAM) format and derive its approximate joint data-aided & non-data-aided Cramér-Rao bound (DA&NDA CRB) when the pilot-aided channel estimation is considered. Then, with the approximate DA&NDA CRB and the classical control-variate method (CVM), an efficient optimization scheme of the G-PSAM format is proposed, which is asymptotically optimal in terms of the mean-square error (MSE) estimation performance. Simulation results reveal the superiority of the optimized G-PSAM (OG-PSAM) format over the S-PSAM format for both short-packet and long-packet transmissions. Also, a practical example of the joint DA&NDA aided carrier synchronization is provided.

The interaction topology plays a significant role in the collaboration of multiagent systems. How to preserve the topology against inference attacks has become an imperative task for security concerns. In this paper, we propose a distributed topology-preserving algorithm for second-order multi-agent systems by adding noisy inputs. The major novelty is that we develop a strategic compensation approach to overcome the noise accumulation issue in the second-order dynamic process while ensuring the exact second-order consensus. Specifically, we design two distributed compensation strategies that make the topology more invulnerable against inference attacks. Furthermore, we derive the relationship between the inference error and the number of observations by taking the ordinary least squares estimator as a benchmark. Extensive simulations are conducted to verify the topology-preserving performance of the proposed algorithm.

The hydraulic system of the controllable pitch propeller (CPP) serves as the power source for adjusting the blade pitch. Due to its structural complexity and harsh operating conditions, any malfunction of this system could significantly impair the vessel's navigation. Apart from the pitch command and the pitch feedback of CPP itself, the number and types of sensors added for fault diagnosis are not fixed. Therefore, this study establishes a multimodal fault diagnosis model based on Gramian angular field(GAF). By considering the deviation values of pitch feedback and pitch command as key variables, this model transforms them into a two-dimensional image using GAF, thereby obtaining more effective feature information. Image features are extracted using ResNet, while the temporal features of additional sensors are extracted using GRU. Finally, a multi-head attention mechanism is employed for feature fusion. This method achieves a classification accuracy of 100% in the classification of four types of hydraulic system faults simulated on the experimental platform.

This paper utilizes the weak approximation method to analyze differential games that involve mixed strategies. Mixed strategies have the potential to produce unique strategic behaviors, whereas traditional models and tools in pure strategy games cannot be directly applied. Based on the stochastic processes with independent increments, we define the mixed strategy without assuming the knowledge of the opponents' strategy and system state. However, this general mixed strategy poses challenges in evaluating game payoff and game value. To overcome these challenges, we utilize the weak approximation method to employ a stochastic differential game to characterize the dynamics of the mixed strategy game. We demonstrate that the game's payoff function can be precisely approximated with an error of the same scale as the step size. Furthermore, we estimate the upper and lower value functions of the weak approximated game to analyze the existence of game value. Finally, we provide numerical examples to illustrate and elaborate on our findings.

Omnidirectional image quality assessment (OIQA) has become an increasingly vital problem in recent years. Most previous blind OIQA methods only extract local features from the distorted viewports, or extract global features from the entire distorted image, lacking the interaction and fusion between local and global features. Moreover, the lack of reference information also limits their performance. Thus, we propose a blind OIQA model which consists of three novel modules, including a bidirectional pseudo-reference module, a Mamba-based global feature extraction module, and a multi-scale local-global feature aggregation module. Specifically, by considering the image distortion degradation process, a bidirectional pseudo-reference module capturing the error maps on viewports is first constructed to refine the multi-scale local visual features, which can supply rich quality degradation reference information without the reference image. To well complement the local features, the VMamba module is adopted to extract the representative multi-scale global visual features. Inspired by human hierarchical visual perception characteristics, a novel multi-scale aggregation module is built to strengthen the feature interaction and effective fusion which can extract deep semantic information. Finally, motivated by the multi-task managing mechanism of human brain, a multi-task learning module is introduced to assist the main quality assessment task by digging the hidden information in compression type and distortion degree. Extensive experimental results demonstrate that our proposed method achieves the state-of-the-art performance on the blind OIQA task compared to other models. © 1991-2012 IEEE.

Based on the topological charge matching principle and mode coupling theory, the higher-order orbital angular momentum (OAM) generating mechanism in a helically-twisted antiresonant fiber (HARF) is illustrated. We successfully fabricate a left-handed HARF by arc discharge method and excite the OAM−1 mode. The experimental result shows that the excitation of the OAM−1 mode is polarization-independent of input light and the polarization of the generated OAM−1 mode can be controlled by changing the polarization of the input light. © 2024 IEEE.

To execute a variety of collaborative tasks, the cooperation for unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) with complicated interactions under dynamic environments is a challenging and critical issue. This paper studies the cooperation issue for UAVs under dynamic environments through an approach of game theory-reinforcement learning (GT-RL) approach, which combines the advantages of both game theory and reinforcement learning. First, to cope with the complicated interactions of UAVs, the cluster of UAVs is modeled as a public goods game with asymmetrical environmental feedback. Then, reinforcement learning is adopted to optimize decision-making of UAVs under unknown and dynamic environments through comparing the dynamic behaviors of UAVs, where a novel dynamics system offers a more comprehensive understanding on cooperative behavior among UAVs. Finally, the simulation results show that the GT-RL approach can effectively promote cooperation among UAVs in completing the collaborative tasks. © 1967-2012 IEEE.

The new generation of industrial cyber-physical systems (ICPS) supported by the edge computing technology enables efficient distributed sensing under massive data volumes and frequent transmissions. Observability is essential to obtain good sensing performance, and most of existing sensing works directly assume that the system is observable. However, it is difficult to satisfy the assumption with the increasingly expanded network scale and dynamic scheduling of devices. To solve this problem, we propose an observability guaranteed distributed method (OGDM) for edge sensing with the cooperation of sensors and edge computing units (ECUs). We analyze the relationship between sensor scheduling and observability based on the network topology and graph signal processing (GSP) technology. In addition, we transform the observability condition into a convex form and take into account sensing error and energy consumption for optimization. Finally, our algorithm is applied to estimate the slab temperature in the hot rolling process. The effectiveness is verified by simulation results.
