Existing methods for person re-identification (Re-ID) are mostly based on supervised learning which requires numerous manually labeled samples across all camera views for training. Such a paradigm suffers the scalability issue since in real-world Re-ID application, it is difficult to exhaustively label abundant identities over multiple disjoint camera views. To this end, we propose a progressive deep learning method for unsupervised person Re-ID in the wild by Tracklet Association with Spatio-Temporal Regularization (TASTR). In our approach, we first collect tracklet data within each camera by automatic person detection and tracking. Then, an initial Re-ID model is trained based on within-camera triplet construction for person representation learning. After that, based on the person visual feature and spatio-temporal constraint, we associate cross-camera tracklets to generate cross-camera triplets and update the Re-ID model. Lastly, with the refined Re-ID model, better visual feature of person can be extracted, which further promote the association of cross-camera tracklets. The last two steps are iterated multiple times to progressively upgrade the Re-ID model. To facilitate the study, we have collected a new 4K UHD video dataset named Campus-4K with full frames and full spatio-temporal information. Experimental results show that with the spatio-temporal constraint in the training phase, the proposed approach outperforms the state-of-the-art unsupervised methods by notable margins on DukeMTMC-reID, and achieves competitive performance to fully supervised methods on both DukeMTMC-reID and Campus-4K datasets. Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) is extensively employed in earth remote sensing, including both civilian and military sectors. Currently, establishing the correspondence between strong scattering regions in SAR images and the 3D geometry of the target has become a research hotspot. Traditional methods based on scattering center modeling overly rely on prior knowledge and manual annotation. However, neural network-based approaches often lack the constraints of SAR imaging principles when performing feature extraction. In this paper, we propose a method for analyzing strong scattering in SAR images based on a differentiable simulator to visualize the correspondence between strong scattering in SAR images and the 3D geometry of the target. Specifically, the differentiable simulator accumulates the scattering intensity in the scattering simulation stage to generate simulated SAR images at multi-pose. By computing the loss with the SAR image in the dataset (ground truth), the differentiable simulator can provide a direct mapping from the strong scattering in SAR images to the target's 3D structures. The effectiveness of the method is validated on a dataset of simulated SAR images based on the MSTAR. From the result we obtained, the correspondence between the 3D structures of the target model and the strong scattering in the image can be intuitively and clearly determined.

One-shot Generative Domain Adaptation in 3D GANs

3D-aware image generation necessitates extensive training data to ensure stable training and mitigate the risk of overfitting. This paper first considers a novel task known as One-shot 3D Generative Domain Adaptation (GDA), aimed at transferring a pre-trained 3D generator from one domain to a new one, relying solely on a single reference image. One-shot 3D GDA is characterized by the pursuit of specific attributes, namely, high fidelity, large diversity, cross-domain consistency, and multi-view consistency. Within this paper, we introduce 3D-Adapter, the first one-shot 3D GDA method, for diverse and faithful generation. Our approach begins by judiciously selecting a restricted weight set for fine-tuning, and subsequently leverages four advanced loss functions to facilitate adaptation. An efficient progressive fine-tuning strategy is also implemented to enhance the adaptation process. The synergy of these three technological components empowers 3D-Adapter to achieve remarkable performance, substantiated both quantitatively and qualitatively, across all desired properties of 3D GDA. Furthermore, 3D-Adapter seamlessly extends its capabilities to zero-shot scenarios, and preserves the potential for crucial tasks such as interpolation, reconstruction, and editing within the latent space of the pre-trained generator. Cloud detection is a crucial step in the preprocessing of satellite remote sensing images. Existing methods tend to have misjudgments when dealing with specific scenarios, such as challenges in distinguishing thin clouds from the background and addressing missing cloud boundaries. To solve this problem, we designed a novel spatial–Frequency Domain Feature Enhancement Block (SFDE) embedded in a U-shaped network called SFDE-net. SFDE consists of three units: the Dual Frequency Feature Unit (DFF), the spatial Domain Feature Unit (SDF), and the Cross-Domain Feature Fusion Unit (CDF). DFF globally learns the boundaries and overall structure of clouds in the frequency domain, SDF captures fine-grained information in the spatial domain, and CDF adaptively fuses features from both DFF and SDF. Our method’s effectiveness was evaluated on two public datasets, GF-1 WFV and LandSat8. Extensive experiments demonstrated that the proposed SFDE-net achieved accurate detection accuracy and outperformed several state-of-the-art methods.

Deep learning-based 3D object detectors often require large-scale labeled 3D datasets, which can be expensive to annotate. To tackle this issue, we introduce a core-set sampling strategy within an active learning framework, selecting highly informative data from a data pool to reduce reliance on such datasets. Additionally, we introduce a scale-sensitive loss function into the 3D object detector to mitigate the disparities in the influence of small and large objects on model learning, thereby enhancing the accuracy of small object detection. Our experiments on the KITTI dataset demonstrate that our method achieves comparable results to the baseline using only 20% of the data. Notably, our approach outperforms the baseline in small object detection, with an 8% accuracy improvement for pedestrians and a 4% improvement for cyclists. Automatic Ship Detection of Remote Sensing Images from Google Earth in Complex Scenes Based on Multi-Scale Rotation Dense Feature Pyramid Networks

Ship detection has been playing a significant role in the field of remote sensing for a long time but it is still full of challenges. The main limitations of traditional ship detection methods usually lie in the complexity of application scenarios, the difficulty of intensive object detection and the redundancy of detection region. In order to solve such problems above, we propose a framework called Rotation Dense Feature Pyramid Networks (R-DFPN) which can effectively detect ship in different scenes including ocean and port. Specifically, we put forward the Dense Feature Pyramid Network (DFPN), which is aimed at solving the problem resulted from the narrow width of the ship. Compared with previous multi-scale detectors such as Feature Pyramid Network (FPN), DFPN builds the high-level semantic feature-maps for all scales by means of dense connections, through which enhances the feature propagation and encourages the feature reuse. Additionally, in the case of ship rotation and dense arrangement, we design a rotation anchor strategy to predict the minimum circumscribed rectangle of the object so as to reduce the redundant detection region and improve the recall. Furthermore, we also propose multi-scale ROI Align for the purpose of maintaining the completeness of semantic and spatial information. Experiments based on remote sensing images from Google Earth for ship detection show that our detection method based on RDFPN representation has a state-of-The-Art performance. Polarimetric Interferometric SAR (PolInSAR) can improve the coherence of images and it plays an important role in urban remote sensing. The explanation of its scattering mechanism is concerned by many researchers. It is always explained from the aspect of different polarization decompositions but seldom from the height of scattering centers. In this paper, a Ku-band UAV-borne PolInSAR system is used to compare the relationship of scattering centers between PolInSAR and Pauli decomposition on different artificial targets. The physical meaning of PolInSAR is preliminary analyzed and our conclusion is also verified through a C-band manned airborne PolInSAR system.

aiWave: Volumetric Image Compression with 3-D Trained Affine Wavelet-like Transform

Volumetric image compression has become an urgent task to effectively transmit and store images produced in biological research and clinical practice. At present, the most commonly used volumetric image compression methods are based on wavelet transform, such as JP3D. However, JP3D employs an ideal, separable, global, and fixed wavelet basis to convert input images from pixel domain to frequency domain, which seriously limits its performance. In this paper, we first design a 3-D trained wavelet-like transform to enable signal-dependent and non-separable transform. Then, an affine wavelet basis is introduced to capture the various local correlations in different regions of volumetric images. Furthermore, we embed the proposed wavelet-like transform to an end-to-end compression framework called aiWave to enable an adaptive compression scheme for various datasets. Last but not least, we introduce the weight sharing strategies of the affine wavelet-like transform according to the volumetric data characteristics in the axial direction to reduce the number of parameters. The experimental results show that: 1) when cooperating our trained 3-D affine wavelet-like transform with a simple factorized entropy coding module, aiWave performs better than JP3D and is comparable in terms of encoding and decoding complexities;2) when adding a context module to remove signal redundancy further, aiWave can achieve a much better performance than HEVC. Recurrent Generic Contour-based Instance Segmentation with Progressive Learning

Contour-based instance segmentation has been actively studied, thanks to its flexibility and elegance in processing visual objects within complex backgrounds. In this work, we propose a novel deep network architecture, i.e., PolySnake, for generic contour-based instance segmentation. Motivated by the classic Snake algorithm, the proposed PolySnake achieves superior and robust segmentation performance with an iterative and progressive contour refinement strategy. Technically, PolySnake introduces a recurrent update operator to estimate the object contour iteratively. It maintains a single estimate of the contour that is progressively deformed toward the object boundary. At each iteration, PolySnake builds a semantic-rich representation for the current contour and feeds it to the recurrent operator for further contour adjustment. Through the iterative refinements, the contour progressively converges to a stable status that tightly encloses the object instance. Beyond the scope of general instance segmentation, extensive experiments are conducted to validate the effectiveness and generalizability of our PolySnake in two additional specific task scenarios, including scene text detection and lane detection. The results demonstrate that the proposed PolySnake outperforms the existing advanced methods on several multiple prevalent benchmarks across the three tasks. Deep Unrestricted Document Image Rectification

In recent years, tremendous efforts have been made on document image rectification, but existing advanced algorithms are limited to processing restricted document images, i.e., the input images must incorporate a complete document. Once the captured image merely involves a local text region, its rectification quality is degraded and unsatisfactory. Our previously proposed DocTr, a transformer-assisted network for document image rectification, also suffers from this limitation. In this work, we present DocTr++, a novel unified framework for document image rectification, without any restrictions on the input distorted images. Our major technical improvements can be concluded in three aspects. Firstly, we upgrade the original architecture by adopting a hierarchical encoder-decoder structure for multi-scale representation extraction and parsing. Secondly, we reformulate the pixel-wise mapping relationship between the unrestricted distorted document images and the distortion-free counterparts. The obtained data is used to train our DocTr++ for unrestricted document image rectification. Thirdly, we contribute a real-world test set and metrics applicable for evaluating the rectification quality. To our best knowledge, this is the first learning-based method for the rectification of unrestricted document images. Extensive experiments are conducted, and the results demonstrate the effectiveness and superiority of our method. We hope our DocTr++ will serve as a strong baseline for generic document image rectification, prompting the further advancement and application of learning-based algorithms.
