In modern video coding standards, block-based inter prediction is widely adopted, which brings high compression efficiency. However, in natural videos, there are usually multiple moving objects of arbitrary shapes, resulting in complex motion fields that are difficult to represent compactly. This problem has been tackled by more flexible block partitioning methods in the Versatile Video Coding (VVC) standard, but the more flexible partitions require more overhead bits to signal and still cannot be made arbitrarily shaped. To address this limitation, we propose an object segmentation-assisted inter prediction method (SAIP), where objects in the reference frames are segmented by some advanced technologies. With a proper indication, the object segmentation mask is translated from the reference frame to the current frame as the arbitrary-shaped partition of different regions without any extra signal. Using the segmentation mask, motion compensation is separately performed for different regions, achieving higher prediction accuracy. The segmentation mask is further used to code the motion vectors of different regions more efficiently. Moreover, the segmentation mask is considered in the joint rate-distortion optimization for motion estimation and partition estimation to derive the motion vector of different regions and partition more accurately. The proposed method is implemented into the VVC reference software, VTM version 12.0. Experimental results show that the proposed method achieves up to 1.98%, 1.14%, 0.79%, and on average 0.82%, 0.49%, 0.37% BD-rate reduction for common test sequences, under the Low-delay P, Low-delay B, and Random Access configurations, respectively. High-Resolution Urban Flows Forecasting With Coarse-Grained Spatiotemporal Data

Urban flow monitoring and forecasting systems play important roles in smart city management. However, due to the long-lasting and enormous deployment cost of ubiquitous traffic monitoring devices (e.g., loop detectors, traffic video detection), it is very difficult to predict flow in high-resolution (HR) with limited monitoring devices. The existing spatiotemporal network based methods usually predict the urban flow in the same spatial scale without considering the spatial correlations between coarse-grained and fine-grained urban flows. To tackle these issues, we propose a HR spatiotemporal transformer network (HRSTT) to predict fine-grained urban flow. Specifically, residual convolution units are employed to constructs the high-level features of three-view temporal (e.g., closeness, period, and trend) flow data. Then, a transformer block is designed to jointly learn the spatiotemporal dynamic features of each temporal flow with self-attention mechanism. For the external factors (e.g., holidays, weather conditions) are extracted by embedding dense networks, which are fused with high level coarse-grained flow feature maps with gated-fusion scheme. Finally, the coarse-grained fusion feature maps are transferred to the distributional upsampling module, generating the fined-grained flow map of target predicted time. Furthermore, the proposed model is evaluated with several baselines on real-world TaxiBJ datasets, demonstrating the state-of-the-art performance of our approach on the fine-grained urban flow forecasting problem. © 2020 IEEE.

Space-based radar has better coverage and is not limited by the curvature of the earth. Aircraft target tracking is particularly important in space-based radar system. However, the long observation distance and strong nonlinear observation increases the challenge of target tracking. Therefore, we proposed a space-based radar nonlinear tracking method for air targets based on variational Bayesian probability hypothesis density (VB-PHD) filter. The relationship between state and observation is established. Then, the VB method is adopted to deal with uncertainty of measurement noise variances. Besides, the cubature filter is introduced to deal with the strongly nonlinear models, and the recursion process is completed by using the third-order spherical radial volume rule. Finally, simulation scenarios with different measurement noise parameters were constructed, and the tracking result comparisons show that it effectively solves nonlinear problems, and tracking precision can be significantly improved.

Fully-polarised (FP) array interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (FP-Array-InSAR) is an important technology in three-dimensional (3D) reconstruction and image interpretation of various scattering mechanisms (SMs) by exploiting the structural and polarisation properties of the targets. There has been a solid foundation for multi-baseline PolInSAR, but lack of systematic comparison and analysis for FP-Array-InSAR. Relying on the UAV-borne FP-Array-InSAR system developed by our research team, this paper applies two 3D imaging methods, one based on polarisation decomposition and the other based on multi-baseline (MB) polarimetric coherence optimization, to four-channel FP-array-InSAR datasets from Suzhou, China. Finally, this paper compares and analyses the experimental results of these two methods, and then gives their applicable scenarios. Such comparative experiments are positive for the rational selection and application of different methods in FP-array-InSAR.

As the electromagnetic environment in battlefields becomes increasingly complex, automatic modulation recognition for noncooperation radiation source signal is becoming vital and challenging. Most previous works were more likely to cause low recognition accuracy with high computational complexity in low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), and only considered spatial or temporal attributes of signal which ignores the feature interaction. In this paper, we firstly apply synchrosqueezing transform (SST) to extract high resolution and robustness time-frequency feature as one of signal representation, and convert the signal into the in-phase/quadrature (I/Q) components as another signal representation, which enhances the diversity of signal representation. Then, we propose a deep learning model to achieve automatic recognition, which has two streams and each stream consists of the convolutional neural network (CNN), bistatic long short-term memory (BiLSTM) and temporal attention (TAT). It efficiently explores the feature from each signal representation and enhances the key features by the introduction of TAT, furthermore, it implements feature interaction to form a new feature matrix. Finally, experiments and analysis were conducted using the RadioML2016.10a dataset. The experimental results showed that compared to other algorithms, this method has higher robustness and perform better recognition accuracy under low SNR. © The Institution of Engineering & technology 2023.

Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) tomography (TomoSAR) is an advanced remote sensing technology that has the ability to acquire three-dimensional information of targets. To enhance target features, different reaularization terms, including L 1 norm, total variation norm, and morphology term, have been introduced into the TomoSAR inversion model. However, there is a lack of attention to establishing a TomoSAR imaging framework with a modular structure that provides flexibility in specifically enhancing different features. In this article, a novel 3D tomographic reconstruction framework based on plug-and-play (PnP) priors and Alternating Direction Method of Multipliers (ADMM) is proposed. The PnP-ADMM framework achieves flexibility through the selection of appropriate priors for the features of targets, leading to a trade-off between the performance of feature enhancement and computational complexity. Simulation and real data experiments verify the effectiveness of the proposed method in flexibly selecting priors for feature enhancement of specific targets.

DeepEraser: Deep Iterative Context Mining for Generic Text Eraser

In this work, we present DeepEraser, an effective deep network for generic text removal. DeepEraser utilizes a recurrent architecture that erases the text in an image via iterative operations. Our idea comes from the process of erasing pencil script, where the text area designated for removal is subject to continuous monitoring and the text is attenuated progressively, ensuring a thorough and clean erasure. Technically, at each iteration, an innovative erasing module is deployed, which not only explicitly aggregates the previous erasing progress but also mines additional semantic context to erase the target text. Through iterative refinements, the text regions are progressively replaced with more appropriate content and finally converge to a relatively accurate status. Furthermore, a custom mask generation strategy is introduced to improve the capability of DeepEraser for adaptive text removal, as opposed to indiscriminately removing all the text in an image. Our DeepEraser is notably compact with only 1.4M parameters and trained in an end-to-end manner. To verify its effectiveness, extensive experiments are conducted on several prevalent benchmarks, including SCUT-Syn, SCUT-EnsText, and Oxford Synthetic text dataset. The quantitative and qualitative results demonstrate the effectiveness of our DeepEraser over the state-of-the-art methods, as well as its strong generalization ability in custom mask text removal. SwinIQA: Learned Swin Distance for Compressed Image Quality Assessment

Image compression has raised widespread interest recently due to its significant importance for multimedia storage and transmission. Meanwhile, a reliable image quality assessment (IQA) for compressed images can not only help to verify the performance of various compression algorithms but also help to guide the compression optimization in turn. In this paper, we design a full-reference image quality assessment metric SwinIQA to measure the perceptual quality of compressed images in a learned Swin distance space. It is known that the compression artifacts are usually non-uniformly distributed with diverse distortion types and degrees. To warp the compressed images into the shared representation space while maintaining the complex distortion information, we extract the hierarchical feature representations from each stage of the Swin Transformer. Besides, we utilize cross attention operation to map the extracted feature representations into a learned Swin distance space. Experimental results show that the proposed metric achieves higher consistency with human's perceptual judgment compared with both traditional methods and learning-based methods on CLIC datasets. Cloud detection is a crucial step in the preprocessing of satellite remote sensing images. Existing methods tend to have misjudgments when dealing with specific scenarios, such as challenges in distinguishing thin clouds from the background and addressing missing cloud boundaries. To solve this problem, we designed a novel spatial–Frequency Domain Feature Enhancement Block (SFDE) embedded in a U-shaped network called SFDE-net. SFDE consists of three units: the Dual Frequency Feature Unit (DFF), the spatial Domain Feature Unit (SDF), and the Cross-Domain Feature Fusion Unit (CDF). DFF globally learns the boundaries and overall structure of clouds in the frequency domain, SDF captures fine-grained information in the spatial domain, and CDF adaptively fuses features from both DFF and SDF. Our method’s effectiveness was evaluated on two public datasets, GF-1 WFV and LandSat8. Extensive experiments demonstrated that the proposed SFDE-net achieved accurate detection accuracy and outperformed several state-of-the-art methods.
