We consider a scenario in which a DoS attacker with the limited power resource and the purpose of degrading the system performance, jams a wireless network through which the packet from a sensor is sent to a remote estimator to estimate the system state. To degrade the estimation quality most effectively with a given energy budget, the attacker aims to solve the problem of how much power to obstruct the channel each time, which is the recently proposed optimal attack energy management problem. The existing works are built on an ideal network model in which the packet dropout never occurs when the attack is absent. To encompass wireless transmission losses, we introduce the signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio-based network. First we focus on the case when the attacker employs the constant power level. To maximize the expected terminal estimation error at the remote estimator, we provide some sufficient conditions for the existence of an explicit solution to the optimal static attack energy management problem and the solution is constructed. Compared with the existing result in which corresponding sufficient conditions work only when the system matrix is normal, the obtained conditions in this paper are viable for a general system and shown to be more relaxed. For the other important index of system performance, the average expected estimation error, the associated sufficient conditions are also derived based on a different analysis approach with the existing work. And a feasible method is presented for both indexes to seek the optimal constant attack power level when the system fails to meet the proposed sufficient conditions. Then when the real-time ACK information can be acquired, the attacker desires a time-varying power attack strategy, based on which a Markov decision process (MDP) based algorithm is designed to solve the optimal dynamic attack energy management problem. Low-poly style illustrations, which have 3D abstract appearance, have become a popular stylish recently. Most previous methods require special knowledges in 3D modeling and need tedious interactions. We present an interactive system for non-expert users to easily manipulate the low-poly style illustration. Our system consists of two parts: vertex sampling and mesh rendering. In the vertex sampling stage, we extract a set of candidate points from the image and rank them according to their importance of structure preserving using adaptive thinning. Based on the pre-ranked point list, the user can select an arbitrary number of vertices for the triangle mesh construction. In the mesh rendering stage, we optimize triangle colors to create stereo-looking low-polys. We also provide three tools for exible modication of vertex numbers, color contrast, and local region emphasis. The experiment results demonstrate that our system outperforms state-of-the-art method via simple user interactions.

Vehicle re-identification (re-id) plays an important role in the automatic analysis of the drastically increasing urban surveillance videos. Similar to the other image retrieval problems, vehicle re-id suffers from the difficulties caused by various poses of vehicles, diversified illuminations, and complicated environments. Triplet-wise training of convolutional neural network (CNN) has been studied to address these challenges, where the CNN is adopted to automate the feature extraction from images, and the training adopts triplets of (query, positive example, negative example) to capture the relative similarity between them to learn representative features. The traditional triplet-wise training is weakly constrained and thus fails to achieve satisfactory results. We propose to improve the triplet-wise training at two aspects: first, a stronger constraint namely classification-oriented loss is augmented with the original triplet loss; second, a new triplet sampling method based on pairwise images is designed. Our experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed methods that achieve superior performance than the state-of-the-arts on two vehicle re-id datasets, which are derived from real-world urban surveillance videos.

Recently, numerous salient object detection methods are proposed for different data types. And a reliable method, which can accurately extract complete salient objects, is beneficial to various vision tasks. However, existing methods may fail in highlighting the entire salient object uniformly. In this work, we propose a simple and universal framework aiming to improve the detection result of existing methods. To remove inaccurate salient regions, we apply location prior and adaptive de-noising to prior saliency maps extracted from existing methods in the pre-processing step. Then, an iteration optimization algorithm considering local smoothness and global similarity is introduced to refine the pre-processed saliency map. The experimental results show that the proposed framework can universally enhance the performance of state-of-the-art salient object detection methods for 2D, 3D and light field data.

In this paper, we focus on the use of multi-modal data to achieve a semantic segmentation of aerial imagery. Thereby, the multi-modal data is composed of a true orthophoto, the Digital Surface Model (DSM) and further representations derived from these. Taking data of different modalities separately and in combination as input to a Residual Shuffling Convolutional Neural Network (RSCNN), we analyze their value for the classification task given with a benchmark dataset. The derived results reveal an improvement if different types of geometric features extracted from the DSM are used in addition to the true orthophoto.

Plastic film mulching (PM), which contributes to nearly half of the increased crop yields in dryland agroecosystems, exacerbates environmental burdens due to its non-degradable nature. Globally, there is a growing demand to replace non-degradable PM with degradable film mulching (DM), yet its impacts on soil organic carbon (SOC) in dryland agroecosystems remains unknown. Here, using multi-field studies and mesocosm experiments, we found that DM strongly increased but PM reduced SOC storage (0–1 m). This difference is likely attributable to the higher microbial C use efficiency in soil under DM, leading to increased microbial-derived C compared to PM. Under the high roading scenario for 2100, DM could reduce the decomposition of SOC (0–1 m) in China’s drylands by 9.0 ± 1.0 Mg ha^–1 year^–1 (one standard error) compared with PM. Our findings highlight that DM is a promising alternative to PM for sequestrating SOC and alleviating C loss under climate change in dryland agroecosystems. © The Author(s) 2025.

Randomized consensus based distributed kalman filtering over wireless sensor networks

This paper is concerned with developing a novel distributed Kalman filtering algorithm over wireless sensor networks based on randomized consensus strategy. Compared with centralized algorithm, distributed filtering techniques require less computation per sensor and lead to more robust estimation since they simply use the information from the neighboring nodes in the network. However, poor local sensor estimation caused by limited observability and network topology changes which interfere the global consensus are challenging issues. Motivated by this observation, we propose a novel randomized gossip based distributed Kalman filtering algorithm. information exchange and computation in the proposed algorithm can be carried out in an arbitrarily connected network of nodes. In addition, the computational burden can be distributed for a sensor which communicates with a stochastically selected neighbor at each clock step under schemes of gossip algorithm. In this case, the error covariance matrix changes stochastically at every clock step, thus the convergence is considered in a probabilistic sense. We provide the mean square convergence analysis of the proposed algorithm. Under a sufficient condition, we show that the proposed algorithm is quite appealing as it achieves better mean square error performance theoretically than the noncooperative decentralized Kalman filtering algorithm. Besides, considering the limited computation, communication and energy resources in the wireless sensor networks, we propose an optimization problem which minimizes the average expected state estimation error based on the proposed algorithm. To solve the proposed problem efficiently, we transform it into a convex optimization problem. And a sub-optimal solution is attained. Neural network-based arithmetic coding of intra prediction modes in HEVC

In both H.264 and HEVC, context-adaptive binary arithmetic coding (CABAC) is adopted as the entropy coding method. CABAC relies on manually designed binarization processes as well as handcrafted context models, which may restrict the compression efficiency. In this paper, we propose an arithmetic coding strategy by training neural networks, and make preliminary studies on coding of the intra prediction modes in HEVC. Instead of binarization, we propose to directly estimate the probability distribution of the 35 intra prediction modes with the adoption of a multi-level arithmetic codec. Instead of handcrafted context models, we utilize convolutional neural network (CNN) to perform the probability estimation. Simulation results show that our proposed arithmetic coding leads to as high as 9.9% bits saving compared with CABAC. Copyright © 2017, The Authors. All rights reserved.

A convolutional neural network approach for half-pel interpolation in video coding

Motion compensation is a fundamental technology in video coding to remove the temporal redundancy between video frames. To further improve the coding efficiency, sub-pel motion compensation has been utilized, which requires interpolation of fractional samples. The video coding standards usually adopt fixed interpolation filters that are derived from the signal processing theory. However, as video signal is not stationary, the fixed interpolation filters may turn out less efficient. Inspired by the great success of convolutional neural network (CNN) in computer vision, we propose to design a CNN-based interpolation filter (CNNIF) for video coding. Different from previous studies, one difficulty for training CNNIF is the lack of ground-truth since the fractional samples are actually not available. Our solution for this problem is to derive the "ground-truth" of fractional samples by smoothing high-resolution images, which is verified to be effective by the conducted experiments. Compared to the fixed half-pel interpolation filter for luma in High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC), our proposed CNNIF achieves up to 3.2% and on average 0.9% BD-rate reduction under low-delay P configuration. Segmentation of point clouds has been studied under a variety of scenarios. However, the segmentation of scanned point clouds for a clustered indoor scene remains significantly challenging due to noisy and incomplete data, as well as scene complexity. Based on the observation that objects in an indoor scene vary largely in scale but are typically supported by planes, we propose a co-segmentation approach. This technique utilizes the mutual agency between the point clouds captured at different times after the objects' poses change due to human actions. Hence, we hierarchically segment scenes from different times into patches and generate tree structures to store their relations. By iteratively clustering patches and co-analyzing them based on the relations between patches, we modify the tree structures and generate our results. To test the robustness of our method, we evaluate it on imperfectly scanned point clouds from a childroom, a bedroom, and two offices scenes.
