In the state-of-the-art video coding standard-High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC), context-adaptive binary arithmetic coding (CABAC) is adopted as the entropy coding tool. In CABAC, the binarization processes are manually designed, and the context models are empirically crafted, both of which incur that the probability distribution of the syntax elements may not be estimated accurately, and restrict the coding efficiency. In this paper, we adopt a convolutional neural network-based arithmetic coding (CNNAC) strategy, and conduct studies on the coding of the DC coefficients for HEVC intra coding. Instead of manually designing binarization process and context model, we propose to directly estimate the probability distribution of the value of the DC coefficient using densely connected convolutional networks. The estimated probability together with the real DC coefficient are then input into a multi-level arithmetic codec to fulfill entropy coding. Simulation results show that our proposed CNNAC leads to on average 22.47% bits saving compared with CABAC for the bits of DC coefficients, which corresponds to 1.6% BD-rate reduction than the HEVC anchor.

In this work, a novel approach for the simulation of synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images is proposed. Also, this approach aims to interpret the mechanisms of the dominated scattering centres in the SAR image. An attributed model based on typical structures is used to characterise the 3D geometry of the targets. The physical optics and the geometry optics are used to calculate the main scattering mechanisms of the specified typical structures. Also, based on scattering properties and the imaging process, the simulation approach is set up. The experiments based on the Terra-SAR data of an airplane are implemented to test the validity of the simulation. The work presented would be useful for SAR automatic target recognition. © 2019 Institution of Engineering and technology. All rights reserved.

Azimuth multichannel (AMC) synthetic aperture radar (SAR) is an advanced technique which can prevent the minimum antenna area constraint and provide high-resolution and wide-swath (HRWS) SAR images. Channel imbalance calibration is an important topic in AMC SAR signal processing, since it has a great impact on the image quality. The phase imbalance of AMC SAR is not only related to the radar system, but also to the satellite attitude. This paper first models the relationship between phase imbalance and satellite attitude, and analyzes the influence of satellite attitude on the phase imbalance. In the presence of the satellite attitude deviation, the phase imbalance is time-variation in azimuth, and spatial-variation in range. Then, the real data acquired by Gaofen-3 (GF-3) in the ultra-fine strip-map (UFS) mode is used to verify the relationship model both in theoretical calculations and estimation. The result shows that the model proposed in this paper can describe the space-time variation of phase imbalance very accurately. Finally, some discussions and conclusions are drawn and the future research perspectives are proposed.

For a long time, object detectors have suffered from extreme imbalance between foregrounds and backgrounds. While several sampling/reweighting schemes have been explored to alleviate the imbalance, they are usually heuristic and demand laborious hyper-parameters tuning, which is hard to achieve the optimality. In this paper, we first reveal that such the imbalance could be addressed in a learning-based manner. Guided by this illuminating observation, we propose a novel Residual Objectness (ResObj) mechanism that addresses the imbalance by end-to-end optimization, while no further hand-crafted sampling/reweighting is required. Specifically, by applying multiple cascaded objectness-related modules with residual connections, we formulate an elegant consecutive refinement procedure for distinguishing the foregrounds from backgrounds, thereby progressively addressing the imbalance. Extensive experiments present the effectiveness of our method, as well as its compatibility and adaptivity for both region-based and one-stage detectors, namely, the RetinaNet-ResObj, YOLOv3-ResObj and FasterRCNN-ResObj achieve relative 3.6%, 3.9%, 3.2% Average Precision (AP) improvements compared with their vanilla models on COCO, respectively. This paper introduces a novel global patch matching method that focuses on how to remove fronto-parallel bias and obtain continuous smooth surfaces with assuming that the scenes covered by stereos are piecewise continuous. Firstly, simple linear iterative cluster method (SLIC) is used to segment the base image into a series of patches. Then, a global energy function, which consists of a data term and a smoothness term, is built on the patches. The data term is the second-order Taylor expansion of correlation coefficients, and the smoothness term is built by combing connectivity constraints and the coplanarity constraints are combined to construct the smoothness term. Finally, the global energy function can be built by combining the data term and the smoothness term. We rewrite the global energy function in a quadratic matrix function, and use least square methods to obtain the optimal solution. Experiments on Adirondack stereo and Motorcycle stereo of Middlebury benchmark show that the proposed method can remove fronto-parallel bias effectively, and produce continuous smooth surfaces. © Authors 2017.

Network predictive control is effectively in dealing with time-delay, data dropouts, packets disorders of Network Control system. This paper studies the stochastic stability of a affine nonlinear system within random time delay. The system controller is consist of a control prediction generator (CPG) at the controller side and a network delay compensator (NDC) at the plant side. Different from the previous literatures that model the random delay of the feedback channel and the forward channel as Markov chain respectively, the model in this paper is based on the round-trip delay, which making the predictive control process more concise but without losing generality. Then, this paper gives the necessary and sufficient conditions for stochastic stability of the closed-loop system. Finally, a numerical example is given to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method. © 2015 Technical Committee on Control Theory, Chinese Association of Automation.

In order to adapt different scale land cover segmentation, an optimized approach under the guidance of k-means clustering for multi-scale segmentation is proposed. At first, small scale segmentation and k-means clustering are used to process the original images;then the result of k-means clustering is used to guide objects merging procedure, in which Otsu threshold method is used to automatically select the impact factor of k-means clustering;finally we obtain the segmentation results which are applicable to different scale objects. FNEA method is taken for an example and segmentation experiments are done using a simulated image and a real remote sensing image from geoEye-1 satellite, qualitative and quantitative evaluation demonstrates that the proposed method can obtain high quality segmentation results. ©, 2015, SinoMaps Press. Neural Machine Translation (NMT) has achieved remarkable progress with the quick evolvement of model structures. In this paper, we propose the concept of layer-wise coordination for NMT, which explicitly coordinates the learning of hidden representations of the encoder and decoder together layer by layer, gradually from low level to high level. Specifically, we design a layer-wise attention and mixed attention mechanism, and further share the parameters of each layer between the encoder and decoder to regularize and coordinate the learning. Experiments show that combined with the state-of-the-art Transformer model, layer-wise coordination achieves improvements on three IWSLT and two WMT translation tasks. More specifically, our method achieves 34.43 and 29.01 BLEU score on WMT16 English-Romanian and WMT14 English-German tasks, outperforming the Transformer baseline.

In this paper, we consider the problem of sensor scheduling under limited resources for two linear dynamical systems. We set up that only two sensor nodes were used to monitor the status of two systems, respectively, and consider the scenario that the sensors are smart enough to have abundant computation capability. At each time, the sensors have to decide whether to transmit its local estimate to the remote control center or not for further processing owing to the limited available energy and low channel bandwidth. The necessary condition for the optimal scheduling of sensors is presented which can significantly reduce the feasible optimal solution space. Based on this necessary condition, we construct an optimal explicit sensor schedule, which is periodic and minimizes the estimation error. Examples and simulations are provided at the end of the paper to support the results.

The GF-3 satellite is the first full-polarization SAR satellite in China, which operates in the C band with a resolution of 1m. This paper presents a dual-aspect geometric terrain correction method to overcome the inherent shortages of SAR image such as foreshortening, shadow and layover. The results using GF-3 satellite data show that the method can effectively eliminate layover and shadow distortions in SAR images. This method solves the geometric correction problem that cannot be solved with a single SAR image.
