Hadoop/MapReduce has emerged as a de facto programming framework to explore cloud-computing resources. Hadoop has many configuration parameters, some of which are crucial to the performance of MapReduce jobs. In practice, these parameters are usually set to default or inappropriate values. This severely limits system performance (e.g., execution time). Therefore, it is essential but also challenging to investigate how to automatically tune these parameters to optimize MapReduce job performance. In this paper, we propose an automatic MapReduce configuration optimization framework named as MR-COF. By monitoring and analyzing the runtime behavior, the framework adopts a cost-based performance prediction model that predicts the MapReduce job performance. In addition, we design a genetic search algorithm which iteratively tunes parameters in order to find out the best one. Testbed-based experimental results show that the average MapReduce job performance is increased by 35% with MR-COF compared to the default configuration. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2015.

Afforestation has been regarded as a potentially effective strategy for the mitigation of climate warming. China has the largest planted forest area worldwide benefited by a series of large-scale afforestation and reforestation project since the 1970s. The planted forests (PF) have been widely reported as an enduring carbon sink. However, the climatic regulation effect of PF on climate through biophysical process remains unclear. To this end, we utilized satellite observations to quantify the impact of the conversion of grasslands (GRA), croplands (CRO) and natural forests (NF) to PF on land surface temperature (LST) between 2003 and 2012 and illustrated the underlying biophysical mechanisms based on a revised Intrinsic Biophysical Mechanism (IBM) method. The results indicated that afforestation of PF caused negligible daily cooling effect (−0.005 ± 0.002 K) compared with NF while induced obvious daily cooling effect compared with GRA (−0.253 ± 0.004 K) and CRO (−0.162 ± 0.002 K). We also demonstrated that the revised IBM attribution method is applicable in interpreting the biophysical mechanism of PF on LST. Attribution analysis revealed that the surface roughness and Bowen ratio dominated the cooling effect as the surface became rougher and more evaporative cooling after converting NF, GRA, or CRO to PF. The contributions of albedo were less stark compared with other components and presented a weak warming effect. Furthermore, the atmospheric feedback was proved that have a pronounced impact on LST and should be included in the attribution of LST change. This study focuses on the potential of PF afforestation to provide local climate adaptation benefits, filling the gaps of previous studies involved to biophysical effect failure in distinguishing NF and PF, and provides new guidance for local climate impact evaluation when implementing forestry projects.

Through the recent performance of convolutional neural networks in image processing tasks, we propose a deep fully convolutional network for remote sensing image inpainting. The proposed Dense-Add Net (Dense-Add Network) can alleviate the vanishing-gradient problem, strengthen feature reuse, and substantially reduce the memory usage. We apply residual learning to learn the mappings from corrupted image to recovered image directly;it will back-propagate gradient to the bottom layers and accelerate the training process. We train the proposed Dense-Add Net with a robust Charbonnier loss function which can achieve high-quality reconstruction. The experimental verify the efficacy of our proposed Dense-Add Net.

Tomographic SAR (TomoSAR) technology has gained significant attention in recent years due to its three-dimensional imaging capability. However, in practical applications, phase errors between different channels can degrade the quality of three-dimensional imaging. Current state-of-the-art methods for phase error compensation based on autofocus techniques suffer from high computational complexity, making them unsuitable for large-scale three-dimensional imaging. In this paper, we propose a multi-channel phase error estimation method based on error back-propagation training optimization. By utilizing the TomoSAR model that incorporates phase errors from multiple channels, we construct a matrix containing the parameters to be estimated for inter-channel phase errors. Through stochastic gradient descent algorithm, we iteratively optimize the parameters of the phase error matrix, ultimately obtaining an estimation of the inter-channel phase errors. Experimental results validate the accuracy of the proposed method.

For chroma intra prediction, previous methods exemplified by the Linear Model method (LM) usually assume a linear correlation between the luma and chroma components in a coding block. This assumption is inaccurate for complex image content or large blocks, and restricts the prediction accuracy. In this paper, we propose a chroma intra prediction method by exploiting both spatial and cross-channel correlations using a hybrid neural network. Specifically, we utilize a convolutional neural network to extract features from the reconstructed luma samples of the current block, as well as utilize a fully connected network to extract features from the neighboring reconstructed luma and chroma samples. The extracted twofold features are then fused to predict the chroma samples-Cb and Cr simultaneously. The proposed chroma intra prediction method is integrated into HEVC. Preliminary results show that, compared with HEVC plus LM, the proposed method achieves on average 0.2%, 3.1% and 2.0% BD-rate reduction on Y, Cb and Cr components, respectively, under All-Intra configuration.

DeepEraser: Deep Iterative Context Mining for Generic Text Eraser

In this work, we present DeepEraser, an effective deep network for generic text removal. DeepEraser utilizes a recurrent architecture that erases the text in an image via iterative operations. Our idea comes from the process of erasing pencil script, where the text area designated for removal is subject to continuous monitoring and the text is attenuated progressively, ensuring a thorough and clean erasure. Technically, at each iteration, an innovative erasing module is deployed, which not only explicitly aggregates the previous erasing progress but also mines additional semantic context to erase the target text. Through iterative refinements, the text regions are progressively replaced with more appropriate content and finally converge to a relatively accurate status. Furthermore, a custom mask generation strategy is introduced to improve the capability of DeepEraser for adaptive text removal, as opposed to indiscriminately removing all the text in an image. Our DeepEraser is notably compact with only 1.4M parameters and trained in an end-to-end manner. To verify its effectiveness, extensive experiments are conducted on several prevalent benchmarks, including SCUT-Syn, SCUT-EnsText, and Oxford Synthetic text dataset. The quantitative and qualitative results demonstrate the effectiveness of our DeepEraser over the state-of-the-art methods, as well as its strong generalization ability in custom mask text removal. Arc array synthetic aperture radar (SAR) is a novel array imaging system for wide-area observation, with wide observation range and high resolution. Arc array synthetic aperture radar uses W-band as carrier signal, and W-band wavelength is short. The small high-frequency vibration of the helicopter-borne platform will cause significant changes in the phase of the echo signal, which will seriously deteriorate the imaging performance of arc array synthetic aperture radar. Based on the high order approximate imaging algorithm of arc array radar, this paper proposes a vibration phase error compensation imaging algorithm based on Short-time Fourier transform (STFT) parameter estimation. The algorithm uses the high-order approximation imaging algorithm of curved array radar to perform high-order approximation of the slant range model, compensates the range cell migration (RCM) and range azimuth coupling in the two-dimensional frequency domain, and finally realizes the vibration error compensation in the range Doppler domain. The simulation results of the lattice target verify the effectiveness of the imaging method.

A visually inspired variational method for automatic image registration is proposed to solve local deformation which traditional global registration model cannot well satisfy. The variational model considers local transformation, global smoothness and visual constraints. To account for intensity variations, we incorporate change of local contrast and brightness into our model. Firstly, the data entry of registration model is built according to the root-mean-square error of intensity;secondly, adaptive constraint using H1 half norm is used to ensure the global smooth in the model;finally, in order to make sure that the spatial attributes of the image satisfy the visual requirements and without distortion, the linear features are used as priori constraints. During the solution of model parameters, the whole image is used to globally estimate the transformation parameters, and then local estimation of the parameters is taken in a small neighbor. The entire procedure is built upon a multi-level differential framework, and the transformation parameters are calculated iteratively, which can consider both global smoothness and local distortion. To assess the quality of the proposed method, ZY-3 satellite images were used. Visual and quantitative analysis proved that the proposed method can significantly improve the registration precision. ©, 2015, SinoMaps Press. All right reserved.

Various blur distortions in video will cause negative impact on both human viewing and video-based applications, which makes motion-robust deblurring methods urgently needed. Most existing works have strong dataset dependency and limited generalization ability in handling challenging scenarios, like blur in low contrast or severe motion areas, and non-uniform blur. Therefore, we propose a PRiOr-enlightened and MOTION-robust video deblurring model (PROMOTION) suitable for challenging blurs. On the one hand, we use 3D group convolution to efficiently encode heterogeneous prior information, explicitly enhancing the scenes’ perception while mitigating the output’s artifacts. On the other hand, we design the priors representing blur distribution, to better handle non-uniform blur in spatio-temporal domain. Besides the classical camera shake caused global blurry, we also prove the generalization for the downstream task suffering from local blur. Extensive experiments demonstrate we can achieve the state-of-the-art performance on well-known REDS and GoPro datasets, and bring machine task gain. Copyright © 2020, The Authors. Gaofen-3 (GF-3) is the first Chinese multichannel synthetic aperture radar (SAR) sensor that can operate in the dual receive channel (DRC) mode. Different from the traditional single-channel SAR system, the multichannel SAR system can overcome the inherent limitation to achieve high-resolution and wide-swath (HRWS) at the same time. However, the key challenge it faces is false target suppression. Especially for the moving vessels on the ocean, the existence of false targets will increase false alarm probability and affect the interpretation of SAR images. In this paper, the method of integration of detection, velocity estimation, location, and imaging for moving targets in the HRWS SAR system is proposed as well as applied to get an unambiguous image. The simulation and GF-3 real data experimental results show the validity of the method.
