A passively Ho-doped fiber laser at 2 μm with soliton rain and noise-like pulse (NLP) operation regime has been realized by using nonlinear polarization rotation (NPR) technology. By adjusting the polarization state, the evolution phenomenon of soliton rain pulse and the NLP are obtained. The typical NLP mode-locking operation regime is achieved by finely adjusting pump power and polarization state, which delivers a corresponding pulse energy of 8.93 nJ with pulse width of 1.31 ps. The soliton rain operation regime with multiple solitons is achieved by finely adjusting pump power, which delivers a corresponding pulse energy of 22.98 nJ with pulse width of 1.21 ps. In addition, a NLP mode-locking operation regime is obtained again under a proper pump power and polarization state with a corresponding pulse energy of 34.14 nJ and pulse width of 1.208 ps. The experimental results well demonstrate the evolution of ultrashort pulse regime with the pump power and polarization state in passively mode-locked Ho-doped fiber lasers at 2 μm. © 2022, The Authors. AsyncSC: An Asynchronous Sidechain for Multi-Domain Data Exchange in Internet of Things

Sidechain techniques improve blockchain scalability and interoperability, providing decentralized exchange and cross-chain collaboration solutions for Internet of Things (IoT) data across various domains. However, current state-of-the-art (SOTA) schemes for IoT multi-domain data exchange are constrained by the need for synchronous networks, hindering efficient cross-chain interactions in discontinuous networks and leading to suboptimal data exchange. In this paper, we propose AsyncSC, a novel asynchronous sidechain construction. It employs a committee to provide Cross-Blockchain as a Service (C-BaaS) for data exchange in multi-domain IoT. To fulfill the need for asynchronous and efficient data exchange, we combine the ideas of aggregate signatures and verifiable delay functions to devise a novel cryptographic primitive called delayed aggregate signature (DAS), which constructs asynchronous cross-chain proofs (ACPs) that ensure the security of cross-chain interactions. To ensure the consistency of asynchronous transactions, we propose a multilevel buffered transaction pool that guarantees the transaction sequencing. We analyze and prove the security of AsyncSC, simulate an asynchronous communication environment, and conduct a comprehensive evaluation. The results show that AsyncSC outperforms SOTA schemes, improving throughput by an average of 1.21 to 3.96 times, reducing transaction latency by 59.76% to 83.61%, and maintaining comparable resource overhead. Drought is a prominent disaster in Chinese history. Analysing the spatial and temporal evolution laws of drought could provide decision supports for drought prevention and control. However, fewer studies were applied to investigate the long-term evolution rules of drought events on different spatial and temporal scales. In this paper, the spatio-temporal changes patterns of drought in China were analysed with geostatistical methods based on the 1470–2000a drought datasets in China, and then the possible future drought trend was predicted. Results showed that:(1) The drought risk in the northern region was the highest during the past 500 years. And, the drought intensity index showed an overall increasing trend with detail pattern of weakening->strengthening-> weakening-> strengthening;(2) The drought condition in the north was server than that in the south, but the drought trend in the south was significantly aggravated. (3) The drought gravity centres were mainly distributed in the north, but it showed a tendency to move southward. (4) From 1470 to 2000, the study area showed a significant drought enhancements, which was predicted to show an increasing trend of drought after 2000. © 2021, CC BY.

Methane (CH4) emissions from point sources in the energy sector plays a crucial role in global CH4 budget. Spaceborne imaging spectrometer has shown superior ability for monitoring these emission events over large spatial coverages and extended timeframes. Presently, the Matched Filter (MF), which is a data-driven method, is widely employed for satellite-based retrieval of CH4 emission flux rates. However, traditional MF method faces challenges such as omission of CH4 plumes and underestimation of CH4 emission flux rate, which may lead to significant uncertainties in the CH4 inventories for the energy industry at global scales. In this study, we propose a new Kalman-Filtering Matched Filter (KMF) algorithm as the improvement of the MF method, incorporating a linear combination of MF results in different CH4 absorption channels to reduce the retrieval bias of point-source CH4 enhancement values. We validate this algorithm in two stages. Retrieval accuracy for the enhancement of column-averaged dry-air mole fraction of CH4 (XCH4) relative to the background (ΔXCH4) is tested using end-to-end simulation and emission-free scenario analysis. Additionally, data from hyperspectral satellites including Chinese Gaofen 5B, Ziyuan 1F, Italian PRISMA, and German EnMAP are used to retrieve CH4 emissions from a ground-based controlled-releasing experiment using our proposed KMF and traditional MF algorithm. We then compare the retrieval results with ground metered-measurements to evaluate the performance on estimating CH4 emission flux rate of our method. The results from end-to-end simulations show that the KMF method exhibits a 34.3% higher fitted-line slope and 25.5% lower root mean square error (RMSE) on ΔXCH4 retrieval compared with MF method. Further analysis in an emission-free scenario indicates that the retrieval precision with the KMF method can improve by up to 42.2% compared to the conventional MF method. Waterlogging, including flooding, is one of the serious agricultural disasters for winter wheat in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River region, especially during the spring. It's of great practical value to discriminating the impact of waterlogging and flooding on winter wheat efficiently in the field. In this study, we combined the field campaign and satellite remote sensing data to discriminate the impact of waterlogging and flooding on winter wheat during the growing stages in the spring. The field experiment was carried out with three treatments, i.e., waterlogging (WL), flooding (FL)(waterlogging with 3 cm water layer above the ground) and contrast (CK), and two varieties, i.e., YM14 and *** phenological stages includes seeding and tillering (ST) from 7 to 27 January and jointing and booting (JB) from 12 March to 1 April, respectively. For each treatment, three samples with an area of 0.25 m 2 were randomly determined and collected. High resolution satellite data, i.e., WorldView2, Pleiades and SPOT were also obtained. We proposed a method to calibrate the collection of high resolution remote sensing data. We used a measurement, namely the M, to differentiate the different waterlogging treatments. The results showed that the yield of winter wheat under different treatments for both varieties in ST and JB had significant differences. It showed that the flooding treatment could be discriminated from its CK and waterlogging treatment for YM14, and the waterlogging treatment of YM18 could be discriminated from its CK 16 days after ST treatment. The treatment in ST showed more lasting impacts on both YM14 and YM18. Compared with ST, the treatments in JB had more severe impacts on winter wheat growth. The flooding treatment of YM14 was differentiable from its CK and waterlogging treatment before the end of JB treatment, earlier than YM18. An Urban Thermal Radiation Analytical Model Based on Sky View Factor

Thermal infrared (TIR) remote sensing is a significant method to obtain information on urban land surface temperature (LST) and surface thermal state. Urban geometric structure and material composition are critical parameters to characterize urban thermal radiation accurately. However, the previous research rarely took these two factors into account comprehensively. This study introduces a sky view factor (SVF) to describe the impact of three-dimensional (3D) structures on thermal radiation. Then, an Urban Thermal Radiation Analytical Model based on the SVF (UTRAM-SVF) was developed by considering the multiple scattering within the urban canopy and the radiation composition of urban components. The cross-comparison of the proposed method was conducted in three ways: the Discrete Anisotropic Radiation Transfer (DART) model, urban effective emissivity model based on SVF (UEM-SVF), and Landsat 8 TIRS data. Compared to DART, the results revealed that the root mean square error (RMSE) of the UTRAM-SVF are 0.04 W/(m2∙sr∙μm) and 0.004 for radiance and effective emissivity in urban canopies, respectively. The results show that the proposed method outperformed the UEM-SVF model in evaluating radiance and effective emissivity over the urban canopy. Furthermore, a field validation was conducted using Landsat 8 Thermal Infrared Sensor (TIRS) data in the Kowloon Peninsula of Hong Kong. The radiance differences vary from 0.05W/ (m²·sr·μm) to 0.3W/ (m²·sr·μm), and RMSE is 0.21W/ (m²·sr·μm) between UTRAM-SVF and Landsat 8 TIRS data. The UTRAM-SVF model can be used to monitor urban thermal radiation based on high spatial resolution satellite data, and can further be helpful to retrieve urban LST. © 2023, The Authors. We propose a fundamental theorem for eco-environmental surface modelling(FTEEM) in order to apply it into the fields of ecology and environmental science more easily after the fundamental theorem for Earth’s surface system modeling(FTESM). The Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei(BTH) region is taken as a case area to conduct empirical studies of algorithms for spatial upscaling, spatial downscaling, spatial interpolation, data fusion and model-data assimilation, which are based on high accuracy surface modelling(HASM), corresponding with corollaries of FTEEM. The case studies demonstrate how eco-environmental surface modelling is substantially improved when both extrinsic and intrinsic information are used along with an appropriate method of HASM. Compared with classic algorithms, the HASM-based algorithm for spatial upscaling reduced the root-meansquare error of the BTH elevation surface by 9 m. The HASM-based algorithm for spatial downscaling reduced the relative error of future scenarios of annual mean temperature by 16%. The HASM-based algorithm for spatial interpolation reduced the relative error of change trend of annual mean precipitation by 0.2%. The HASM-based algorithm for data fusion reduced the relative error of change trend of annual mean temperature by 70%. The HASM-based algorithm for model-data assimilation reduced the relative error of carbon stocks by 40%. We propose five theoretical challenges and three application problems of HASM that need to be addressed to improve FTEEM.

Facial image based kinship verification aims to decide whether there exists kinship between the given facial images. In practice, the cross-generation differences will cause adverse effects on kinship verification, which limits the performance. Therefore, how to mine the implied similarity from facial images with large cross-generation divergence is an important problem in kinship verification, which has not yet been well studied. In view of this, we propose a Similarity Mining via Implicit matching pattern LEarning (SMILE) approach for kinship verification. Specifically, SMILE mainly consists of two modules, including a Semi-coupled Multi-pattern Similarity Learning (SMSL) module and a Cross-Generation Feature Normalization (CGFN) module. The SMSL module is designed to learn multiple semi-coupled matching patterns for mining the implicit facial similarity information from different perspectives. The CGFN module aims to reduce the divergence between facial images of parent and child. Extensive experiments demonstrate that the proposed approach outperforms the existing state-of-the-art methods.

Are We Building on the Rock? On the Importance of Data Preprocessing for Code Summarization

Code summarization, the task of generating useful comments given the code, has long been of interest. Most of the existing code summarization models are trained and validated on widely-used code comment benchmark datasets. However, little is known about the quality of the benchmark datasets built from real-world projects. Are the benchmark datasets as good as expected? To bridge the gap, we conduct a systematic research to assess and improve the quality of four benchmark datasets widely used for code summarization tasks. First, we propose an automated code-comment cleaning tool that can accurately detect noisy data caused by inappropriate data preprocessing operations from existing benchmark datasets. Then, we apply the tool to further assess the data quality of the four benchmark datasets, based on the detected noises. Finally, we conduct comparative experiments to investigate the impact of noisy data on the performance of code summarization models. The results show that these data preprocessing noises widely exist in all four benchmark datasets, and removing these noisy data leads to a significant improvement on the performance of code summarization. We believe that the findings and insights will enable a better understanding of data quality in code summarization tasks, and pave the way for relevant research and practice.
