With extensive access to renewables, the inertia of microgrid is significantly reduced, which in turn puts forward higher requirements for the frequency stability of the system. In this paper, a frequency control method based on reinforcement learning is proposed for the intermittent and unstable characteristics of renewables. First, the microgrid frequency control principle and reinforcement learning theory are introduced. On this basis, a microgrid frequency control strategy based on Q-learning algorithm is proposed, and the design process is described in detail, including the design of the action set, state set, and reward function. Finally, the Q-learning algorithm is pretrained offline through simulation experiments, and tested in several scenarios for online operation. The effectiveness and adaptability of the proposed algorithm are verified through comparative analysis with other strategies.

The blast furnace (BF) is the main equipment in ironmaking industry in China. For the BF, the production and the smooth operation largely depend on a reasonable burden structure. In the burden structure modelling, the burden descent is the weak link due to the black-box nature of the burden descending process. The viscous flow model (VFM) is a widely used burden descent model with relatively high accuracy. However, when adopted to determine the burden structure, the VFM can only perform under a constant charging matrix. In this work, we incorporate the VFM into the burden structure model which is capable of utilizing varying charging matrixes. First, to incorporate the VFM, a new layout of the burden structure model is designed. Then, to address the multiple burden descents problem caused by the VFM, a new strategy implementing the VFM is proposed. With this strategy, the multiple burden descents are compact into one solution process, and the model efficiency is thereby increased. Finally, the case study on the performance of the proposed burden structure model is carried out. Results show that the proposed model is able to capture the layer details in the burden. Results also show that, unlike the VFM alone, this VFM-based model is able to utilize varying charging matrix and depict structure of each individual layer. © 2021 IEEE

Solving the Model Unavailable MARE using Q-Learning Algorithm

In this paper, the discrete-time modified algebraic Riccati equation (MARE) is solved when the system model is completely unavailable. To achieve this, firstly a brand new iterative method based on the standard discrete-time algebraic Riccati equation (DARE) and its input weighting matrix is proposed to solve the MARE. For the single-input case, the iteration can be initialized by an arbitrary positive input weighting if and only if the MARE has a stabilizing solution;nevertheless a pre-given input weighting matrix of a sufficiently large magnitude is used to perform the iteration for the multi-input case when the characteristic parameter belongs to a specified subset. Benefit from the developed specific iteration structure, the Q-learning (QL) algorithm can be employed to subtly solve the MARE where only the system input/output data is used thus the system model is not required. Finally, a numerical simulation example is given to verify the effectiveness of the theoretical results and the algorithm. © 2024, CC BY.

Protection effect for polymer-in rich phase in SBS modified asphalt during long-term aging by different MMT/TiO2/SBS pretreatment methods

To realize the precise protection for polymer-in rich phase (PRP) in Styrene-Butadiene-Styrene (SBS) modified asphalt during long-term aging, the influence of different pretreatment methods (mechanical stirring and microwave treatments) of organic montmorillonite (MMT)/nanometer titania (TiO2)/SBS on long-term thermal-oxidative and ultraviolet (UV) aging resistance of SBS modified asphalt (SBSMA) were investigated. Long-term thermal-oxidative aging was simulated using a pressure aging vessel, while UV aging was performed in a UV aging chamber. Rheological properties were assessed using a dynamic shear rheometer with linear amplitude sweep test, and micro characteristics were analyzed using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and fluorescence microscopy tests. The results showed that both mechanical stirring and microwave treatments could contribute to the interaction between MMT/TiO2 and SBS modifier, improve the compatibility of SBS modifier and asphalt, and enhance the fatigue life of SBSMA after long-term thermal-oxidative and UV aging. Compared with the MMT/TiO2/SBS modified asphalt without pretreatment, these two pretreatment methods can not only reduce the formation of carbonyl in SBSMA during long-term aging, but also effectively retard the degradation of SBS modifier, and then protect the PRP feature of SBSMA from disappearing. Moreover, after the surface modification of TiO2 with a silane coupling agent, the effect of microwave treatment is enhanced further. These findings will be conducive to developing a new anti-aging design method of SBSMA. © 2025 Elsevier Ltd

Because the antenna is an important passive component in the RF front-end of mobile communication, some studies have found that the combination of EBG and antenna can effectively improve the performance of the antenna. In this paper, a dual band microstrip antenna based on EBG structure is designed, which improves the gain of the antenna, and the resonant frequencies are 2.4 GHz and 3.5 GHz. After simulation, the return loss at two resonant frequencies is less than-19.5 dB, which basically meets the design requirements. © 2022 IEEE.

The mass rapid transit (MRT) systems play a pivotal role for urban mobility services but are frequently susceptible to various disruptions. The bus bridging service is a widely-applied substitute transit service in response to the malfunction of MRT systems caused by MRT disruptions. As MRT systems serve the majority demands in urban, a significant number of buses are needed when MRT systems break down. However, in the literature, very little attention has been paid to the source of buses used in bus bridging services, and fleets of buses were impractically assumed to be available as soon as MRT disruptions occur. To bridge this gap, this study explores a feasible source of buses, i.e., nearby bus lines. Specifically, when MRT disruptions occur, the buses operating along nearby bus lines are dispatched to perform bus bridging services. The bus dispatching decisions affect the service quality of bus system and timetables of bus bridging system, which brings a joint optimization problem integrating bus dispatching and bus bridging timetabling. In response to the real-time requirements, the investigated problem is modeled with a rolling horizon approach. For each horizon, the problem is formulated as a mixed integer linear programming model to minimize total penalties caused by affected onboard passengers and cumulative waiting passengers in both bus and bus bridging systems. An effective decomposition method is tailored to find high-quality solutions efficiently. Through decomposition method, the model can be split into three sub-problems, and three efficient methods are proposed to solve these sub-problems based on their unique features. The efficiency of proposed model and method is demonstrated using a case study in Singapore. The computational results show our model and method can meet real-time requirements and guide buses in an efficient way. This paper reports the development and application of an elastic-column model for rapid draining of pipelines. The water-hammer equations with a moving boundary are used to model the emptying process, and the SPH method is employed to solve the governing equations. The image particle method is used to ensure complete kernel support and impose boundary conditions, simultaneously. The velocity-Verlet method is applied for time integration to enhance accuracy. The developed SPH-based elastic-column model clearly shows the transient effect in the emptying process, and it is a promising tool for the simulation of rapid emptying of pipelines with undulating elevation profiles. © TU/e 2023 Pressure Surges 14.

Bearings are indispensable supporting parts of the marine electric thruster (MET). Due to long-term work in harsh marine environments, bearings are more prone to failures. However, the diagnosis of MET bearings using vibration signals is a difficult task since the collected signal is nonlinear and nonstationary, and its fault features are easily swallowed by environmental noise. This paper proposes a novel multisensor and multiscale convolutional neural networks (MM-CNN) method to extract different scale features under low signal-to-noise ratios and diagnose the faults of MET bearings. Firstly, the principal component analysis is introduced to fuse multiple signals so as to reduce redundant information. Secondly, a multiscale convolutional module is designed for the feature extraction at different scales by four groups of convolution kernels with different dilate rates. The experimental results on the MET bearing dataset demonstrate that the proposed method outperforms the other state-of-the-art deep learning methods in terms of accuracy and antinoise ability. © 2023 IEEE.
