The artificial bee colony (ABC) algorithm is one of well-known evolutionary algorithms, which has been successfully applied to many continuous or combinatorial optimization problems. To increase further its convergence speed and avoid being trapped in local optimum, this paper proposes an improved ABC algorithm (IABC), which aims to enhance diversification of search at each stage of the ABC algorithm. Firstly, a chaotic mapping rule is established by introducing a chaos operator into the initial position generation rules in order to ensure the ergodicity of initial positions. Then, an isometric contraction parallel search rule is devised, based on which a neighborhood search on initial positions is performed to enhance the convergence speed and the local search ability. Next, a parallel selection strategy is developed by using roulette and reverse roulette simultaneously, which allows selecting poor positions to escape from local optimum. Meanwhile, a global updating mechanism based on gravitational potential field is developed, which can guide the rejection and generation of positions to accelerate the convergence of the algorithm. The computational results show that the IABC can improve the convergence speed and solution quality without falling into the local optimum prematurely. Finally, a further analysis on the IABC is conducted using the Taguchi method, which focuses on the factor level setting related to the following key factors: chaotic mapping rules in the initial position generation rules, isometric contraction parallel search rules, parallel selection strategies and the update threshold in the global updating mechanism. The results display that the optimal combination of factor levels has been achieved in the IABC. © Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2018.

Multiple convolutional neural network (CNN) classifiers have been proposed for electroencephalogram (EEG) based brain-computer interfaces (BCIs). However, CNN models have been found vulnerable to universal adversarial perturbations (UAPs), which are small and example-independent, yet powerful enough to degrade the performance of a CNN model, when added to a benign example. This paper proposes a novel total loss minimization (TLM) approach to generate UAPs for EEG-based BCIs. Experimental results demonstrated the effectiveness of TLM on three popular CNN classifiers for both target and non-target attacks. We also verified the transferability of UAPs in EEG-based BCI systems. To our knowledge, this is the first study on UAPs of CNN classifiers in EEG-based BCIs. UAPs are easy to construct, and can attack BCIs in real-time, exposing a potentially critical security concern of BCIs. Copyright © 2019, The Authors. All rights reserved.

σ 54 promoters are responsible for transcriptional carbon and nitrogen in prokaryotes. However, it is costly and difficult by experimental identification of them, especially in the postgenomic era with avalanche of sequencing data. Thus, it is imperative to develop efficiently and rapidly computational algorithms to identify the σ 54 promoters. In this study, a novel predictor named SVM-Adaboost was developed to predict σ 54 promoters from sequences alone, it used the Adaboost algorithm as the core, and support vector machine (SVM) as weak base predictors. SVM-Adaboost integrated SVM predictors to construct a more powerful and robust ensemble predictor. In SVM-Adaboost, we used pseudo k-tuple nucleotide composition method to encode DNA sequences, and then a feature selection method was used to further select the discriminate features for subsequent classification. We strictly evaluate the SVM-Adaboost on a constructed gold-standard σ 54 promoter dataset using ten-fold cross validation 100 times, and achieved an average accuracy of 96.06%.

The phenomenon of cracks on the surface of buildings is widespread. The existence of cracks affects the normal use of buildings, shortening the service life, seriously damaging the structure of buildings, resulting in safety accidents. Therefore, regular detection and reinforcement of cracks on the surface of buildings is a necessary link to ensure safety. At present, the detection of building surface cracks is mainly carried out by manpower with means of equipment assisted. However, there are some problems in manpower detection, such as high manpower consumption, low *** paper presents a method of detecting and inspecting cracks on building surface based on image processing technology in machine vision, which includes image gray transformation, image denoising etc. Curve fitting and least square method are used to obtain crack parameters, so as to improve the inspecting efficiency and realize the automation of building surface inspection. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

A new type of rehabilitation robot that can follow the user side-by-side is designed for aiding the elderly and disabled. The Human Following Rehabilitation Robot (HFRR) consists of a metal armrest, a set of sensors and a differential mobile base. By predicting the user's speed in the future through the user's current walking speed and the preset path, the problem of human following side-by-side is converted to a problem of keeping a certain lateral distance from the predicted trajectory. Linearizing the tracking error model, the nonholonomic mobile robot (NMR) can maintain a certain lateral distance from the trajectory by using Model Predictive control (MPC) and then follow the user side-by-side. The simulation and experimental results show the proposed controller can obtain good performance in this problem.

DNA strand displacement is widely used in the construction of DNA molecule computational models. In this work, nicking enzyme is used as the input of the logic calculation model for it can cut one strand of a double-stranded DNA at a specific recognition nucleotide sequences known as a restriction site. Based on this, a variety of logic gates are designed and implemented, and a multi-person voting circuit is constructed. © 2018, Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

The BDI model has always been the focus of subject modeling research, which includes three kinds of thinking states of the rational subject: Belief, Desire and Intention. Belief is the cognition of agent to the world;it is a collection of environmental information, other agent information, and its own information that the agent has;and it is also the basis of the agent's thinking activity. Due to differences in the individual's living environment and experience, the formation of heterogeneous beliefs is an important issue in the BDI model study. This article divides individual belief set into two parts: knowledge belief and achievable belief. This article proposes an overall framework for the formation of individual heterogeneity beliefs: First, the individual's knowledge experience is modeled, and the empirical knowledge is structured and quantified into binary propositions;then the BP neural network learn and memory propositions of different combinations to form heterogeneous beliefs. Experiments show that this method can simulate the heterogeneity of individual beliefs caused by the individual's own experience, and can realize the belief generation mechanism of gradual information flow, limited attention and heterogeneous priors. © The Authors, published by EDP Sciences, 2018.

This paper proposes an efficient model named Light YOLO for hand gesture recognition on the embedded platforms. Light YOLO improves accuracy, speed, and model size, in three aspects. To deal with the small scale gestures in practical applications, we strengthen the YOLOv2 with a spatial refinement module to obtain fine-grained features. To accelerate the refined network, we propose a selective-dropout channel pruning approach to prune the redundancy convolution kernels in the network. Moreover, we introduce a dataset for hand gesture recognition in complex scenes. The experimental results on this dataset show that the proposed Light YOLO significantly improve the YOLOv2 network, i.e., accuracy from 96.80% to 98.06%, speed form 40PFS to 125FPS, and size form 250M to 4MB.

This paper presents a model named Multi-Scale YOLOv2 (MS-YOLOv2) for hand detection in complex scenes. The proposed MS-YOLOv2 is implemented by introducing three modules to YOLOv2, including a Multi-Scale Feature Refinement Module to acquire fine-grained features, a Channel Importance Evaluation Module to recalibrate feature channels and a Hard Example Punishment Module to get rid of hand interference areas. Experiment results show that the proposed MS-YOLOv2 makes much performance improvement to YOLOv2, but with little computational complexity gain. On our dataset, the proposed MS-YOLOv2 can achieve 98.2% of AP and 97.9% of AR. Moreover, on the VIVA challenge, the proposed MS-YOLOv2 achieves AP/AR of 85.1%/45.8% at Level-1 and 80.1%/45.9% at Level-2.

Scoring of sleep stages plays an important role in the diagnosis of sleep-related diseases. Scoring by visual inspection is time-consuming and heavily depends on the experience of experts. Thus, there is an urgent need for an automatic sleep stage classification system. This paper proposes a novel compact convolutional neural network (C-CNN) using only single-channel EEG signal. Compared with traditional machine learning approaches based on hand-engineered features, our approach provides an end-to-end solution that requires almost no prior knowledge and preprocessing while achieving better performance. Experiments on the expanded Sleep-EDF database verified its effectiveness and efficiency. In addition, we notice the issue of class imbalance in sleep stages, and a class-imbalance metric, the balanced classification accuracy (BCA), is introduced. At the cost of a little drop in accuracy, which is still higher than existing classification methods, the introduction of class-imbalance weights can significantly increase the BCA metric and result in a higher recall for each sleep stage. This paper also proposes a recurrent neural network based on the attention mechanism and bidirectional long short-term memory (LSTM), which provides better performance than C-CNN but requires more training time.
