In this paper, a simple parallel calculation cluster is built by PC and local area network. The power electric network is divided into several subnets according the method of path graph partitioning. Subnets are allocated to PC unit to calculate individual and the server is in charge of adjusting process and counting the current of link line. Besides soft-hard ware environment of PC cluster is given in this paper and the design and implementation of program are also presented. The key technique and way to settle problem are discussed during implementation procedure. At last, the IEEE39 nodal points system is tested. The satisfaction result is gotten by comparing to single computer. © 2005 IEEE.

A Super Capacitor Energy Storage (SCES) system applied to distributed generation system and distribution network is presented, which is mainly composed of three parts: the electrical double-layer capacitors array that stores energy, the AC/DC-DC/AC power converter system and the integrated control system composed of microprocessors. Application studies of the SCES system for active power supply, voltage control, voltage oscillation elimination and harmonic elimination are described. The stability and control effect of the system relation to the node impedance are analyzed in detail. This paper also presents studies on experiments of the SCES system synchronous and re-synchronous operating with power network when grid fault and recovered. © 2005 IEEE.

It is very important and necessary to calculate Total Transfer Capability (TTC) incorporating Flexible Alternate Current Transmission system (FACTS) devices in power markets and analyze impacts of FACTS on TTC. Calculating TTC incorporating with FACTS devices is an optimal problem constrained by some equalities and inequalities. This paper proposes a mathematical model for calculating TTC incorporating with FACTS devices in power markets, and detailed calculation method is also put forward. The constraints include voltage constraints, thermal stability limits, generator's capacity limits, load demand, steady-state power flow, and control parameter constraints of FACTS devices, etc. The sensitivity-based repetitive linear iterative approach is proposed to solve the proposed model. The detailed solution process is described in this paper. To realize the proposed model and calculation method, a TTC calculation software incorporating with FACTS devices is developed based on PSASP/UPI, a set of advanced application software package developed by China Electric Power Research Institute. This paper proposes a new approach on combined TTC solution including FACTS and power flow calculation based on PSASP/UPI, and gives the interface program for User Programming Interface (UPI) in PSASP. The IEEE 14-bus test system is used to verify the proposed algorithm and program. Numerical results show that FACTS devices and their locations have different impacts on TTC, also prove that the proposed model and algorithm is correct and effective. © 2005 IEEE.

Based on rough set, this paper use discernibility matrix to reduce the condition attributes. The reduced samples are laid by weighted mean roughness to avoid blindness and redundancy. By this method, model space can be compressed greatly and weighted mean roughness is easy to calculate. Weighted mean roughness is used to separate attributes' priority in every lay, which make the diagnosis system had strong tolerant ability. When the electric power grid is fault, the result of diagnosis will be correct by searching every lay with priority level. The correctness and effectiveness are validated by the analysis result of emulation. © 2005 IEEE.

Imitating human's ability of visual and analysis models, a computer vision-based measuring-instrument calibration method is proposed in this paper. Capturing meter images from real-time video with every analog output, via Radial basis function neural network (RBFNN) to classify the dial plate elements, and meter reading can be obtained from complex needle movement. The particle feature extraction, RBFNN simple architecture and fast training process can satisfy the real-time meter reading perfectly in the needle identifier and reading recognition. The least squares fit method based on maximum likelihood estimate is efficient in needle parameter derivation, and the computer vision-based meter calibration method has high performance and accuracy. © 2005 IEEE.

The magnetic storm results in the transmission lines with geomagnetically induced current (GIC). And GIC happening in random has the frequency between 0.001Hz - 0.1Hz, and continues from several minutes to several hours. Based on elaborating mechanism and characteristic of GIC in grids and the influence on china power grids, the article has conducted the research work of GIC monitoring technology, and has investigated the method of sampling data of GIC, the survey algorithm and the new monitoring device. The simulated test shows, the monitoring device can effectively measure GIC which is signal of quasi direct current and randomness, has advantages of having few data to be handled and needing little memory space, etc. © 2005 IEEE.

In this paper, a novel HVDC transmission system is presented which is with parallel large capacitor connected in the DC side of the rectifier (shorted form HVDC-C). The fundamental principle and technology characteristics of HVDC-C are analyzed. The study shows that HVDC-C reduces the component of harmonic voltage and harmonic current both side in AC system and DC transmission line, makes control strategy more flexible and the filter structure more simple, etc. Furthermore, the control method, contrast to conventional HVDC and application foreground of HVDC-C is discussed briefly. The simulations based on PSCAD/EMTDC show that HVDC-C can operate steadily, has the capability to restore steadily when short circuit fault occurs, and is feasible technically and obvious in advantages. © 2005 IEEE.

Based on the characteristics of TCSC, the influence of TCSC on fault component distance protection is analyzed. With the new setting resistance to be ZZd-jXc, the action of fault component distance protection on the line equipped with TCSC is presented. It is concluded that the fault component distance protection will not act incorrectly, but the range of protection will be reduced, especially when the TCSC is bypassed. © 2005 IEEE.

Through the analysis on voltage source converter (VSC) equations in dq0 coordinate system, the state space equation of the generalized plant is gained. By use of H∞ theory, constant DC voltage H∞ controller and constant AC voltage controller are designed. On the basis of establishing MATLAB simulation model for transmitting power to passive network via VSC-HVDC system, the simulation of control modes, such as constant DC voltage control, constant AC voltage control and constant reactive power control, is conducted. Simulation results show that the proposed controller can meet the need of supplying power to passive network and the control modes are effective. © 2005 IEEE.

With increasing attention to sustainable development and environmental protection, more and more countries turn to wind energy to reduce their dependence on traditional fossil fuel energy. Among the new challenges with this trend is how to integrate wind farm with existing ac network more effectively. The paper presents a possible measure based on VSC-HVDC, namely so-called wind farm incorporated VSC-HVDC (WVSC-HVDC). In the paper the wind farm along with an ac grid supplies to a passive network. The paper firstly introduces VSC-HVDC, and then presents a space vector based control strategy for supplying to a passive network. The rectifier controls dc voltage and reactive power that is needed by the wind farm. The inverter controls the ac bus voltage in the passive network. Simulations using PSCAD/EMTDC are performed to study the steady and transient behaviors of WVSC-HVDC. With harmonics analysis, the simulation results will be helpful for further understanding of the operation characteristics of WVSC-HVDC and its protection design. © 2005 IEEE.
