A fast and effective double-level segmentation method is proposed to detect and segment the concealed objects adaptively in various real-time X-ray Compton backscatter (CBS) images. The double-level segmentation method is composed of the global segmentation and the local segmentation. The global segmentation separates the body area from background area on the basis of a two-class Gaussian density, and the local segmentation segments the concealed objects from the body area based on k-means algorithm and a two-class mixture of Gaussian densities. We have compared our method with one multilevel segmentation method. Experiments confirm our method more efficient and effective in detection and segmentation. © 2013 IEEE.

This paper defines the existing navigation and location services data and six kinds of retrieval patterns. By contrasting to the existing trajectory index methods, we propose several index algorithms of different dimensions in the MapReduce mode, particularly, a spatiotemporal index algorithm named Layer-by-layer Index Based on Grid Partition (LIBGP), which efficiently avoids the problem of low trajectory recognition rate. In order to achieve real-time query to a large number of location services data, GPS data as an example, we present a multidimensional retrieval framework, combining the index mechanism of Hbase with our proposed algorithms. An analysis of our experimental results indicates that our methods build a flexible retrieval with high efficiency. © 2013 IEEE.

As the number of Web services grows and the diversity increases, it is imperative to bring semantics to Web services to provide richer descriptions. However, many solutions developed in the field of semantic annotation suffer from lack of relevant ontologies that are comprehensive enough to contain as many concepts as possible. Based on public open ontology, this paper presents an approach for augmenting semantics of Web services. For Web services in WSDL format, the semantics is enhanced by associating inputs and outputs with concepts from public open ontology. Then two methodologies based on match degree and service discovery respectively are described to evaluate the approach. With the support of OpenCyc, one experiment is carried out on OWLS-TC4 to test the effectiveness of the approach, the other experiment is conducted on 11836 WSDL files crawled from the Internet to expand the approach to a large number of Web services. The experimental results show that the approach performs well even when the number of Web services is large, moreover, it performs better when dealing with well-described Web services. © 2013 IEEE.

It is essential to ensure the connection of data transmission link between sensors or other detection devices and the Data Processing Server (DPS) to the normal working of sensor network. Communication reachability can be enhanced by increasing more connected ways for them. So, this paper introduces an intelligent Multi-ways Communication Device (MCD) based on AM3359ZCZ processor. MCD provides multi-ways including wired LAN communication, Wi-Fi, ADSL, 3G network communication for network communications. It supports configuring Network Interface Card (NIC), each multi-ways communication, DHCP service and ways-table which decides the way of data transmission of the MCD via web browser. MCD selects one of the multi-ways according to the way-table to communicate automatic. Also, MCD allows users custom communication way. © 2013 IEEE.

Nonparametric statistics inspired similarity measure for accuracy in collaborative filtering

Similarity computation is especially significant in collaborative filtering algorithms. In the existed literatures or large recommender systems, researchers generally use cosine similarity or Pearson correlation coefficient to compute the similarities. However, on one hand, both two measures are more applicable in linear space while the ratings cannot linearly reflect users' interest intensity. On the other hand, different systems have different rating restricts, so it's unreasonable to treat varied systems with the same computation method. In this work, inspired by nonparametric statistics, a sound memory-based method with a novel similarity measure is proposed to eliminate the affection of rating distributions and system diversities on similarity computation. Experiments based on Jester are set to evaluate the performance of the approach. And the highly competitive results show that our approach is able to significantly improve the recommendation quality. © 2013 Binary Information Press.

The WSDL document is an XML-based interface that is used for describing the abstract functionality offered by a service and the concrete details of how a service can be called. It thus serves the most important factor of Web service availability over the Internet for that's the only way in which potential clients could search, discover and interact with the described service. In this paper, based on the analytical investigation on current status of Web services that exist on the Web today, we propose a tool which can detect Web service availability and repair some errors in the WSDL document. According to the different types of errors we collected and analyzed, our tool can automatically correct or prompt user interactively to patch the WSDL file. The experiment with more than 17000 Web services in real world indicates that our tool produces a high error detection rate with great repair rate. It would be a useful assistant to service provider to publish their WSDL file, and improve the service retrieval and employ process. © 2013 IEEE.

Being able to understand dynamics of human mobility is essential for social management and urban planning. Based on the sociology of community, this paper chooses different types of communities as research objects, and then characterizes human mobility that describes most probable activities associated with them. With the analysis of thousands of digital footprint data in the urban district, we find a strong correlation in daily activity patterns within the group of people who live in the same type of communities. In addition, in further study, we find that they have different habits of going to the park, which correlates with the distance between park and community and the time slot at the same time. © 2013 IEEE.

Dialog Act (DA) is an important pragmatics feature for us to understand speakers' intention. Many methods have been proposed to recognize DA tags. However, little work has been conducted to address the problem of DA tagging in Chinese spoken dialog language. In this work, we employ both the lexical features and the inter-utterance dependency features for DA tagging. And we propose three different methods: n-gram, extended HMM and n-gram+KNN. The experimental results show that these methods are effective for the task. © 2013 IEEE.

In recent years, the Web of Data has emerged with the release of growing amount of Linked Data. Since traditional Information Retrieval (IR) technologies are no longer suit for the retrieval on Linked Data, it becomes difficult for ordinary users to retrieve the data efficiently and accurately. This paper presents a method of doing keyword search on Web of Data. We propose two distributed inverted index schemes, one of which is built from Linked Data and the other from the ontology. And as a necessary part of the ontology index, an ontology encoding scheme is also proposed. Based on the index schemes, we design an improved ranking algorithm named OntRank by introducing a semantic factor into the BM25F ranking model. The experimental evaluation illustrates the efficiency of constructing indexes and the precision of retrieval results. © 2013 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

Visual saliency detection and segmentation are widely used in many applications in image processing and computer vision. However, existing saliency detection methods have not fully taken the spatial information of salient regions into account. Inspired by the basic photographic composition rules, we present a novel saliency detection method, which utilizes the knowledge of photographic composition as priors to improve the saliency detection results. Moreover, an online parameter selection method is proposed when utilizing GrabCut to achieve the saliency segmentation result. We test our method on the 1000 benchmark test images and dataset MSRA. Extensive experimental results show the applicability and effectiveness of our method. © 2013 ACM.
