Network-grid computing is widely adopted in complex data computing and distributed data processing. In order to construct loosely-coupled application, the scientific workflow technique was used to invoke distributed services and data. However, there are many drawbacks in current scientific workflow system such as the complexity of manipulation and the difficulty of system deploy. In this paper, aims to the urgent requirement of astronomic data processing, we have a study on a lightweight scientific workflow system and discuss the critical techniques of the system implementation. Finally, we present a lightweight scientific workflow system, which named C-SWF, to support the complicated data processing in the field of astronomy. C-SWF fully implemented the critical features such as task customization, job scheduling, data movement, data's provenance and task re-run mechanism. Comparing with the existing scientific workflow system, C-SWF has many useful features that simplify the manipulation and deployment of the system.

In the previous study of dynamic packet filtering technique, Counting Bloom Filter (CBF) algorithm was adopted to implement the filtering rule's adding and deleting dynamically. However, the drawbacks of CBF, i.e., low memory utilization, limited rule capacity and high false positive rate, are obvious. In this paper, d-left Counting Bloom Filter (d-left CBF) algorithm is exploited to improve the performance of the dynamic packet filtering. Through the usage of the algorithm, compared with CBF, approximately 56 times memory space is saved. In addition, with the increasing of memory allocation, the false positive rate of d-left CBF decreases more significantly than CBF. The experimental results and corresponding analyses indicate that d-left CBF is feasible and high-efficient in the process of the dynamic packet filtering.

As technologies such as symmetrical multiprocessing (SMP) and multicore processor (MCP) advanced, more and more computational cores are contained in one node. Therefore, parallel applications running on a cluster can exchange data among processes through either intra-node or inter-node communication. This gives rise to the question of how much network bandwidth impact on parallel computing performance when intra-node and inter-node communications exist in a certain proportion. In this paper, we try to analyze and estimate this impact via using communication mechanism of message passing interface (MPI) and multi-core technology. The results show that the proportion of intra-node communication to inter-node communication has a significant effect on performance when the network bandwidth is between 50~400Mib/s, especially about 200Mib/s.

Pressure and strokes are the much natural input modalities from pens. This study investigates the potentials of coupling pressure and strokes with pen-based interactions by discussing the possible strategies of using them. Pressure can be used as discrete or continuous manners, which are explored by two presented techniques: two-layer operation and Pressure Cursor. An experiment was conduct to determine the pressure spectrum that can be controlled easily. There are two ways to employ strokes to produce a scalar value, which plays a parameter control role in pen-based interactions. The two mechanisms of using strokes to produce a value are examined, which are further demonstrated by a series of applied scenarios.

The generic crawler provides more help to people for finding information in WWW. However, it has some drawback in terms of precision and efficiency because of its generality and no specialty. In this paper, we address two issues of the topical web crawler. One is how to make the definition of the topic;the other is how to sort of links to be downloaded in the queue efficiently. It aims to visit only relevant pages, and get a great scale of hyperlinks which link to the relevant pages. The crawl method in this paper is a novel one, which is based on the semi-structured features of the website and content information. The results of experiment show that it is a very effective method for focused crawler. © 2009 IEEE.

Summary-based model of information retrieval in language model framework

Standard IR treats the whole document as relevant, the implication of this being that using terms from non-relevant sections of these documents for IR may also cause query drift. This paper investigates a novel retrieval model that aims to concentrate more user's attention on the parts of the text that possess a high density of relevant information, while, at the same time, to provide enough information to support their retrieval decisions. It is proposed that an automatically generated summary of each document, biased to a user's query, can provide such a function. Based on the experimental results on TREC collections, it is showed the retrieval model based on summary is more effective than standard one based on document. 1553-9105/ Copyright © 2009 Binary Information Press.

A context-dependent approach to query expansion in information retrieval

In practical applications of information retrieval, as the search engine, the query user submitted contains only several keywords usually. This will cause unmatched issue between words of relevant documents and user's query and have more serious negative effects on the performance of information retrieval. On the basis of analyzing of process of producing query, this paper puts forward a new method of query expansion on the basis of context and global information. The approach extracts related terms between documents and query through context and global information. The expansion terms are selected according to their relation to the whole query. At the same time, the position information between terms are considered. The experiment result on TREC data collection shows the method proposed by the paper, has 11-29% of the improvement all the time more than the language modeling method without expanding. Compared to the popular approach of query expansion, pseudo feedback, the method proposed in this paper has the competed average precision. 1553-9105/ Copyright © 2009 Binary Information Press.

The domain knowledge has a direct impact on the result of question - answering (Q & A) in the restricted domain Question Answering System (QA). In this paper, a method of answer extraction for domain Chinese question-and-answer (Q&A) is proposed, which based on the analysis of interrogative sentence and the answer type, carrying on the text retrieval with the help of the domain knowledge and obtaining the relevant paragraphs of the question as the candidate answer. For the question of numeral or list entity type, extracted the question center related domain entity as the answers by adopting the naming entity recognition. For the definition questions, the sentences or paragraphs with higher relevance can be extracted to become the answer based on the relevance ranking between the candidate sentences or paragraphs and questions by combined the computing method of keywords weighting and the method of semantic similarity between the sentences and questions. Experimented on the answer extraction in Yunnan tourism domain, the results show that more remarkable effects have been achieved by adopting the method of answer extraction from domain Chinese question-and-answer. © 2009 IEEE.

Evolutionary Negative Selection Algorithms (ENSAs) could be regarded as hybrid algorithms of Evolutionary Algorithms (EAs) and Negative Selection Algorithms (NSAs). The average time complexity of ENSAs on combinational optimization problems has never been studied before. In this paper, the average time complexity of ENSAs on one combinational optimization problem is analyzed. The theoretical results demonstrate that, for the Two Max function, the ENSA with an appropriate matching threshold could perform better than the traditional (N+N) EA. Some simulation experiments on the combinational problem are also done, and the experimental results are consistent with theoretical results.

This paper presents the expert fault monitoring and intelligent comprehensive control of a proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cell (PEMFC) as backup power source for an uninterruptible power supply (UPS) system. The failure status can be shown on the screen of a micro-computer (or a PC) linked with the UPS through an RS-232 and on the control panel of the UPS through LED indicator lights. The proposed intelligent comprehensive monitors and controllers of PEMFC and UPS can supply high quality power with flexible conversion functions, leading to the establishment of reliable power management for UPS applications. Finally, a suitable strategy and technique of fault monitoring and control for a UPS hybrid system with backup PEMFC and battery is implemented. The performances of the monitors and controllers are evaluated by experimental results, showing that the developed UPS system with backup PEMFC and battery power sources is suitable for industry applications.
