Do we measure novelty when we analyze unusual combinations of cited references? A validation study of bibliometric novelty indicators based on F1000Prime data

Lee, Walsh, and Wang (2015) – based on Uzzi, Mukherjee, Stringer, and Jones (2013) – and Wang, Veugelers, and Stephan (2017) proposed scores based on cited references (cited journals) data which can be used to measure the novelty of papers (named as novelty scores U and W in this study). Although previous research has used novelty scores in various empirical analyses, no study has been published up to now – to the best of our knowledge – which quantitatively tested the convergent validity of novelty scores: do these scores measure what they propose to measure? Using novelty assessments by faculty members (FMs) at F1000Prime for comparison, we tested the convergent validity of the two novelty scores (U and W). FMs’ assessments not only refer to the quality of biomedical papers, but also to their characteristics (by assigning certain tags to the papers): for example, are the presented findings or formulated hypotheses novel (tags "new findings" and "hypothesis")? We used these and other tags to investigate the convergent validity of both novelty scores. Our study reveals different results for the novelty scores: the results for novelty score U are mostly in agreement with previously formulated expectations. We found, for instance, that for a standard deviation (one unit) increase in novelty score U, the expected number of assignments of the "new finding" tag increase by 7.47%. The results for novelty score W, however, do not reflect convergent validity with the FMs’ assessments: only the results for some tags are in agreement with the expectations. Thus, we propose – based on our results – the use of novelty score U for measuring novelty quantitatively, but question the use of novelty score W. Copyright © 2019, The Authors. With the popularity of online mental health platforms, more individuals are seeking help and receiving social support by openly discussing their problems. Therefore, it's crucial to gain a deeper understanding of which problem disclosures and social support on these platforms can attract more user attention and engagement. Previous research has primarily focused on social media forums. Our work concentrates on the professional mental health platform, intending to understand the linguistic features present in posts that promote user engagement and interaction. We employ text mining and deep learning techniques to analyze posts consisting of 22,250 questions from help-seekers and 78,328 answers providing social support extracted from the Chinese online mental health counseling platform. Initially, we analyze the high-frequency words and topics of the questions and answers to gain insights into the primary focal points and the range of topics covered in these posts. The results indicate that work-related issues are the most concerning and troublesome for help-seekers, and the topics that users follow are approximately 8 types, including growth, family, in-love, marriage, emotions, human-relations, behavioral-therapy and career. Subsequently, we analyze the language usage in question-and-answer posts with different engagement from three aspects: vocabulary categories, linguistic style matching, and language modeling, aiming to identify which linguistic features can attract more user attention and engagement. The results reveal that high-engagement answer posts exhibit a higher degree of linguistic style matching with the corresponding questions, and the use of vocabulary categories also influences the attention and engagement of the posts. This paper explores the road to vastly improving the broadband connectivity in future 6G wireless systems. Different categories of use cases are considered, with peak data rates up to 1 Tbps. Several categories of enablers at the infrastructure, spectrum, and protocol/algorithmic levels are required to realize the intended broadband connectivity goals in 6G. At the infrastructure level, we consider ultra-massive MIMO technology (possibly implemented using holographic radio), intelligent reflecting surfaces, user-centric cell-free networking, integrated access and backhaul, and integrated space and terrestrial networks. At the spectrum level, the network must seamlessly utilize sub-6 GHz bands for coverage and spatial multiplexing of many devices, while higher bands will be mainly used for pushing the peak rates of point-to-point links. Finally, at the protocol/algorithmic level, the enablers include improved coding, modulation, and waveforms to achieve lower latency, higher reliability, and reduced complexity. © 2020, CC BY.

Digital personal health libraries: A systematic literature review

Objective: This paper gives context on recent literature regarding the development of digital personal health libraries (PHL) and provides insights into the potential application of consumer health informatics in diverse clinical specialties. Materials and Methods: A systematic literature review was conducted following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) statement. Here, 2,850 records were retrieved from PubMed and EMBASE in March 2020 using search terms: personal, health, and library. Information related to the health topic, target population, study purpose, library function, data source, data science method, evaluation measure, and status were extracted from each eligible study. In addition, knowledge discovery methods, including co-occurrence analysis and multiple correspondence analysis, were used to explore research trends of PHL. Results: After screening, this systematic review focused on a dozen articles related to PHL. These encompassed health topics such as infectious diseases, congestive heart failure, electronic prescribing. data science methods included relational database, information retrieval technology, ontology construction technology. Evaluation measures were heterogeneous regarding PHL functions and settings. At the time of writing, only one of the PHLs described in these articles is available for the public while the others are either prototypes or in the pilot stage. Discussion: Although PHL researches have used different methods to address problems in diverse health domains, there is a lack of an effective PHL to meet the needs of older adults. Conclusion: The development of PHLs may create an unprecedented opportunity for promoting the health of older consumers by providing diverse health information. Copyright © 2020, The Authors. Recently, super-resolution methods pursue visual pleasant details attract more attention in academic circle. Unlike former accurate driving models, they leverage new losses measured the difference of features extracting from a pre-trained deep learning model. Moreover, the popular GANs structure are introduced to approach better outputs. In general, these new visual feeling promoting losses are constrained by the learning ability of model and effected by the weakness of GANs. In order to address these problems, we propose a novel SR method to generating abundant details. Based on former SR methods and texture generated models, we combine new model constructure and integrated loss function to achieve our goal. The new constructure derives from the very thought that more information from the LR input leads to more accurate results. The new integrated loss try to decrease the weakness of each one by corresponding loss.. Experiments show that our model achieves higher quality generations than former methods.

Collaborative Metric Learning (CML) has recently emerged as a popular method in recommendation systems (RS), closing the gap between metric learning and Collaborative Filtering. Following the convention of RS, existing methods exploit unique user representation in their model design. This paper focuses on a challenging scenario where a user has multiple categories of interests. Under this setting, we argue that the unique user representation might induce preference bias, especially when the item category distribution is imbalanced. To address this issue, we propose a novel method called Diversity-Promoting Collaborative Metric Learning (DPCML), with the hope of considering the commonly ignored minority interest of the user. The key idea behind DPCML is to include a multiple set of representations for each user in the system. Based on this embedding paradigm, user preference toward an item is aggregated from different embeddings by taking the minimum item-user distance among the user embedding set. Furthermore, we observe that the diversity of the embeddings for the same user also plays an essential role in the model. To this end, we propose a Diversity Control Regularization Scheme (DCRS) to accommodate the multi-vector representation strategy better. Theoretically, we show that DPCML could generalize well to unseen test data by tackling the challenge of the annoying operation that comes from the minimum value. Experiments over a range of benchmark datasets speak to the efficacy of DPCML.

Deep learning (DL) architectures for super-resolution (SR) normally contain tremendous parameters, which has been regarded as the crucial advantage for obtaining satisfying performance. However, with the widespread use of mobile phones for taking and retouching photos, this character greatly hampers the deployment of DL-SR models on the mobile devices. To address this problem, in this paper, we propose a super lightweight SR network: s-LWSR. There are mainly three contributions in our work. Firstly, in order to efficiently abstract features from the low resolution image, we build an information pool to mix multi-level information from the first half part of the pipeline. Accordingly, the information pool feeds the second half part with the combination of hierarchical features from the previous layers. Secondly, we employ a compression module to further decrease the size of parameters. Intensive analysis confirms its capacity of trade-off between model complexity and accuracy. Thirdly, by revealing the specific role of activation in deep models, we remove several activation layers in our SR model to retain more information for performance improvement. Extensive experiments show that our s-LWSR, with limited parameters and operations, can achieve similar performance to other cumbersome DL-SR methods. Copyright © 2019, The Authors. Since the concern of privacy leakage extremely discourages user participation in sharing data, federated learning has gradually become a promising technique for both academia and industry for achieving collaborative learning without leaking information about the local data. Unfortunately, most federated learning solutions cannot efficiently verify the execution of each participant's local machine learning model and protect the privacy of user data, simultaneously. In this article, we first propose a Zero-knowledge Proof-based Federated Learning (ZKP-FL) scheme on blockchain. It leverages zero-knowledge proof for both the computation of local data and the aggregation of local model parameters, aiming to verify the computation process without requiring the plaintext of the local data. We further propose a Practical ZKP-FL (PZKP-FL) scheme to support fraction and non-linear operations. Specifically, we explore a Fraction-Integer mapping function, and use Taylor expansion to efficiently handle non-linear operations while maintaining the accuracy of the federated learning model. We also analyze the security of PZKP-FL. Performance analysis demonstrates that the whole running time of the PZKP-FL scheme is approximately less than one minute in parallel execution.
