The low-altitude economy (LAE), as a new economic paradigm, plays an indispensable role in cargo transportation, healthcare, infrastructure inspection, and especially post-disaster communication. Specifically, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), as one of the core technologies of the LAE, can be deployed to provide communication coverage, facilitate data collection, and relay data for trapped users, thereby significantly enhancing the efficiency of post-disaster response efforts. However, conventional UAV self-organizing networks exhibit low reliability in long-range cases due to their limited onboard energy and transmit ability. Therefore, in this paper, we design an efficient and robust UAV-swarm enabled collaborative self-organizing network to facilitate post-disaster communications. Specifically, a ground device transmits data to UAV swarms, which then use collaborative beamforming (CB) technique to form virtual antenna arrays and relay the data to a remote access point (AP) efficiently. Then, we formulate a rescue-oriented post-disaster transmission rate maximization optimization problem (RPTRMOP), aimed at maximizing the transmission rate of the whole network. Given the challenges of solving the formulated RPTRMOP by using traditional algorithms, we propose a two-stage optimization approach to address it. In the first stage, the optimal traffic routing and the theoretical upper bound on the transmission rate of the network are derived. In the second stage, we transform the formulated RPTRMOP into a variant named V-RPTRMOP based on the obtained optimal traffic routing, aimed at rendering the actual transmission rate closely approaches its theoretical upper bound by optimizing the excitation current weight and the placement of each participating UAV via a diffusion model-enabled particle swarm optimization (DM-PSO) algorithm. Recent developments in unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and mobile edge computing (MEC) have provided users with flexible and resilient computing services. However, meeting the computing-intensive and latency-sensitive demands of users poses a significant challenge due to the limited resources of UAVs. To address this challenge, we present a multi-objective optimization approach for multi-UAV-assisted MEC systems. First, we formulate a multi-objective optimization problem aiming at minimizing the total task completion delay, reducing the total UAV energy consumption, and maximizing the total amount of offloaded tasks by jointly optimizing task offloading, computation resource allocation, and UAV trajectory control. Since the problem is a mixed-integer non-linear programming (MINLP) and NP-hard problem which is challenging, we propose a joint task offloading, computation resource allocation, and UAV trajectory control (JTORATC) approach to solve the problem. However, since the decision variables of task offloading, computation resource allocation, and UAV trajectory control are coupled with each other, the original problem is split into three sub-problems, i.e., task offloading, computation resource allocation, and UAV trajectory control, which are solved individually to obtain the corresponding decisions. Moreover, the sub-problem of task offloading is solved by using distributed splitting and threshold rounding methods, the sub-problem of computation resource allocation is solved by adopting the Karush-Kuhn-Tucker (KKT) method, and the sub-problem of UAV trajectory control is solved by employing the successive convex approximation (SCA) method. With the rapid development of artificial intelligence and semantic networks, knowledge graphs have received extensive attention in various application domains. As a domain knowledge graph, a genealogical knowledge graph has significant research value in the family blood, family culture, and medical genetic analysis. However, as the identical relationship often has different names and complex relationships such as divorce, remarriage, and polygamy, the reasoning based on the genealogical knowledge graph is a challenging task. In response to this problem, we propose a scheme for kinship reasoning in the genealogical knowledge graph. First, based on real genealogical revision experiences, a character ontology framework in the genealogical knowledge graph is defined, and basic kinship reasoning rules are designed. Then, given different definitions of kinship in different surnames, the solution of custom reasoning rules is integrated into the reasoning framework. In addition, aiming at complex relationships in family trees, such as multiple generations of ancestors and multiple wives, a series of inference optimization methods are proposed. Finally, we implement this scheme in the Huapu system, and the experimental results conducted on a real genealogical dataset demonstrate the effectiveness and practicality of our proposed scheme.

Topic shift detection aims to identify whether there is a change in the current topic of conversation or if a change is needed. The study found previous work did not evaluate the performance of large language models like ChatGPT on the task of topic shift. Therefore, this paper's main task and innovation lie in analyzing ChatGPT's performance on topic shift detection. To provide a more comprehensive evaluation, we conducted topic shift detection tasks on ChatGPT from three aspects: single utterances, adjacent utterances, and contextual levels. Additionally, to gauge the performance of large language models, we conducted experiments on multiple small-scale models and compared the results of the two models. Experimental results on the publicly available English TIAGE dataset showed that small-scale models exhibited lower recall in all three aspects, while ChatGPT performed better in the recall. This suggests that compared to small-scale models, large models are more capable of accurately detecting topic shifts. However, large models also exhibited lower precision, indicating that while ChatGPT can recognize content differences in utterances, its judgment on whether these different contents belong to the same topic is poor.

Many daily applications are generating massive amount of data in the form of stream at an ever higher speed, such as medical data, clicking stream, internet record and banking transaction, etc. In contrast to the traditional static data, data streams are of some inherent properties, to name a few, infinite length, concept drift, multiple labels and concept evolution. Among all the data mining tasks, classification is one of the basic topics in data stream mining and has gained more and more attentions among different research communities. Extreme Learning Machine (ELM) has drawn much interests in data classification due to its high efficiency, universal approximation capability, generalization ability, and simplicity, which have greatly inspired the development of many ELM-based algorithms and their applications during the past decades. In this paper, we mainly provide a comprehensive review on ELM theoretical research and its variants in data stream classification, and categorize these algorithms from different perspectives. Firstly, we briefly introduce the basic principles of ELM and its characteristics. Secondly, we give an overview of different ELM variants to address the particular issues of data stream classification. Thirdly, we present an overview of different strategies to optimize the ELM, which have further improved the stability, accuracy and generalization ability of ELM, and briefly introduce some practical applications of ELM in data stream classification. Finally, we conduct several groups of experiments to compare the performance of ELM based models addressing the focused issues. Also, the open issues and prospects of ELM models used for stream classification are discussed, which are worthwhile to be further studied in the future. © 2022

An Empirical Study on Information Extraction using Large Language Models

Human-like large language models (LLMs), especially the most powerful and popular ones in OpenAI’s GPT family, have proven to be very helpful for many natural language processing (NLP) related tasks. Therefore, various attempts have been made to apply LLMs to information extraction (IE), which is a fundamental NLP task that involves extracting information from unstructured plain text. To demonstrate the latest representative progress in LLMs’ information extraction ability, we assess the information extraction ability of GPT-4 (the latest version of GPT at the time of writing this paper) from four perspectives: Performance, Evaluation Criteria, Robustness, and Error Types. Our results suggest a visible performance gap between GPT-4 and state-of-the-art (SOTA) IE methods. To alleviate this problem, considering the LLMs’ human-like characteristics, we propose and analyze the effects of a series of simple prompt-based methods, which can be generalized to other LLMs and NLP tasks. Rich experiments show our methods’ effectiveness and some of their remaining issues in improving GPT-4’s information extraction ability. Copyright © 2023, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Deep learning methods have shown significant performance in medical image analysis tasks. However, they generally act like ”black box” without explanations in both feature extraction and decision processes, leading to lack of clinical insights and high risk assessments. To aid deep learning in envisioning diseases with visual clues, we propose Representation Group-Disentangling Network (RGD-Net), which can completely disentangle feature space of input X-ray images into several independent feature groups, each corresponding to a specific disease. Taking several semantically related and labeled X-ray images as input, RGD-Net firstly extracts completely group-disentangled representations of diseases through Group-Disentangle Module, which applies group-swap and linking operations to construct latent space by enforcing semantic consistency of attributes. To prevent learning degenerate representations defined as shortcut problem, we further introduce adversarial constricts on mapping from features to diseases, thus avoiding model collapse with former free-form disentanglement. Experiments on chestxray-14 and ChestXpert datasets demonstrate that RGD-Net are effective in predicting diseases with remarkable advantages, which leverage potential factors contributing to different diseases, thus enhancing interpretability in working patterns of deep learning methods.

AME4163: Principles of engineering Design is a design, build and test course offered at the University of Oklahoma, Norman, USA. Throughout the semester students are expected to reflect on authentic and immersive experiences and write Take-aways and Learning Statements. At the end of the semester each student submits a summative Semester Learning Essay. Between 2019–2021 we collected about 10,000 Take-aways and Learning Statements from the Semester Learning Essays of nearly 400 students. In this paper, we attempt to help instructors gain insight of what students have learned through these materials and thence improve the delivery of the course in the future. We analyze their Take-aways from summative Semester Learning Essays by using dictionary-based sentiment analysis to assess students' subjective feelings toward what they have learned. The results prove that we gain insight into their learning thereby providing instructors with evidence-based guidance on modifying the course from different perspectives. The method proposed is generalizable to courses that involve authentic immersive experiences.

Pre-training for ad-hoc retrieval: Hyperlink is also you need

Designing pre-training objectives that more closely resemble the downstream tasks for pre-trained language models can lead to better performance at the fine-tuning stage, especially in the ad-hoc retrieval area. Existing pre-training approaches tailored for IR tried to incorporate weak supervised signals, such as query-likelihood based sampling, to construct pseudo query-document pairs from the raw textual corpus. However, these signals rely heavily on the sampling method. For example, the query likelihood model may lead to much noise in the constructed pre-training data. In this paper, we propose to leverage the large-scale hyperlinks and anchor texts to pre-train the language model for ad-hoc retrieval. Since the anchor texts are created by webmasters and can usually summarize the target document, it can help to build more accurate and reliable pre-training samples than a specific algorithm. Considering different views of the downstream ad-hoc retrieval, we devise four pre-training tasks based on the hyperlinks. We then pre-train the Transformer model to predict the pair-wise preference, jointly with the Masked Language Model objective. Experimental results on two large-scale ad-hoc retrieval datasets show the significant improvement of our model compared with the existing methods. Copyright © 2021, The Authors. Group based personalized search by integrating search behaviour and friend network

The key to personalized search is to build the user profile based on historical behaviour. To deal with the users who lack historical data, group based personalized models were proposed to incorporate the profiles of similar users when re-ranking the results. However, similar users are mostly found based on simple lexical or topical similarity in search behaviours. In this paper, we propose a neural network enhanced method to highlight similar users in semantic space. Furthermore, we argue that the behaviour-based similar users are still insufficient to understand a new query when user's historical activities are limited. To tackle this issue, we introduce the friend network into personalized search to determine the closeness between users in another way. Since the friendship is often formed based on similar background or interest, there are plenty of personalized signals hidden in the friend network naturally. Specifically, we propose a friend network enhanced personalized search model, which groups the user into multiple friend circles based on search behaviours and friend relations respectively. These two types of friend circles are complementary to construct a more comprehensive group profile for refining the personalization.
