Textbook Question Answering (TQA) is the task of correctly answering diagram or non-diagram questions given large multi-modal contexts consisting of abundant essays and diagrams. In real-world scenarios, an explainable TQA system plays a key role in deepening humans’ understanding of learned knowledge. However, there is no work to investigate how to provide explanations currently. To address this issue, we devise a novel architecture towards span-level eXplanations for TQA (XTQA). In this paper, spans are the combinations of sentences within a paragraph. The key idea is to consider the entire textual context of a lesson as candidate evidence, and then use our proposed coarse-to-fine grained Explanation Extracting (EE) algorithm to narrow down the evidence scope and extract the span-level explanations with varying lengths for answering different questions. The EE algorithm can also be integrated into other TQA methods to make them explainable and improve the TQA performance. Experimental results show that XTQA obtains the best overall explanation result (mIoU) of 52.38% on the first 300 questions of CK12-QA test splits, demonstrating the explainability of our method (non-diagram: 150 and diagram: 150). The results also show that XTQA achieves the best TQA performance of 36.46% and 36.95% on the aforementioned splits respectively. The field of Information Systems (ISs) has long been recognized, so has Enterprise Information Systems (EISs), a field close to it. Long existing also in organizations or enterprises is the field of records management, now predominantly digital records management (DRM), which shares the many goals of ISs and EISs in supporting the operation and success of organizations. While the DRM field recognized rather early in its battle to digital records challenges that the need to establish formal collaborations with the ISs and EISs professions, it is still rare to spot today discussions regarding such collaborations in the general information and communication technology (ICT) literature. To help bridge the gap, this chapter introduces to the ISs and EISs professions one of the major developments of the international DRM field, that is, the records systems elaborated by the InterPARES (International Research on Permanent and Authentic Records in Electronic Systems) project, for the purpose of invoking further discussions. © Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2019.

In this paper, we focus on examining the effects of Ad-context on the click-Through rate (CTR) for the online advertising. Many researches have shown that ad-context congruity is a key factor to CTR, but the features of ad-context are rarely introduced in CTR prediction algorithms. By leveraging data from various sources, and using text mining and sentiment analysis techniques, our proposed approach extracts three types of features (i.e. users, advertisements and ad-context features) to predict CTR. User features describe "Who" is browsing the webpage, advertisement features depict "How" an ad serving is, and ad-context features include "What" the product is, "Where" an ad displays, as well as the "Mood" of the context. Experiment results show that our proposed approach outperforms the benchmark models by introducing ad-context features. Novel ad-context features we proposed make good contributions to the prediction of CTR. The research highlights the power of ad-context in online advertising CTR prediction. Moreover it gives an insight into supporting effective advertising and improving users' satisfaction. © 2018 Universitat zu Koln. All rights reserved.

RAKA: Co-training of relationships and attributes for cross-lingual knowledge alignment

Cross-lingual knowledge alignment suffers from the attribute heterogeneity when leveraging the attributes and also suffers from the conflicts when combing the results inferred from attributes and relationships. This paper proposes an interaction-based attribute model to capture the attribute-level interactions for estimating entity similarities, eliminating the negative impact of the dissimilar attributes. A matrix-based strategy is adopted in the model to accelerate the similarity estimation. We further propose a co-training framework together with three merge strategies to combine the alignments inferred by the attribute model and the relationship model. The whole framework can effectively and efficiently infer the aligned entities, relationships, attributes, and values simultaneously. Experimental results on several cross-lingual knowledge datasets show that our model significantly outperforms state-of-the-art comparison methods (improving 2.35-51.57% in terms of Hit Ratio@1). A deep belief network-based method to identify proteomic risk markers for Alzheimer’s disease

While a large body of research has formally identified apolipoprotein E (APOE) as a major genetic risk marker for Alzheimer’s disease, accumulating evidence supports the notion that other risk markers may exist. The traditional Alzheimer’s-specific signature analysis methods, however, have not been able to make full use of rich protein expression data, especially the interaction between attributes. This paper develops a novel feature selection method to identify pathogenic factors of Alzheimer’s disease using the proteomic and clinical data. This approach has taken the weights of network nodes as the importance order of signaling protein expression values. After generating and evaluating the candidate subset, the method helps to select an optimal subset of proteins that achieved an accuracy greater than 90%, which is superior to traditional machine learning methods for clinical Alzheimer’s disease diagnosis. Besides identifying a proteomic risk marker and further reinforce the link between metabolic risk factors and Alzheimer’s disease, this paper also suggests that apidonectin-linked pathways are a possible therapeutic drug target. Unsupervised vehicle re-identification with progressive adaptation

Vehicle re-identification (reID) aims at identifying vehicles across different non-overlapping cameras views. The existing methods heavily relied on well-labeled datasets for ideal performance, which inevitably causes fateful drop due to the severe domain bias between the training domain and the real-world scenes;worse still, these approaches required full annotations, which is labor-consuming. To tackle these challenges, we propose a novel progressive adaptation learning method for vehicle reID, named PAL, which infers from the abundant data without annotations. For PAL, a data adaptation module is employed for source domain, which generates the images with similar data distribution to unlabeled target domain as "pseudo target samples". These pseudo samples are combined with the unlabeled samples that are selected by a dynamic sampling strategy to make training faster. We further proposed a weighted label smoothing (WLS) loss, which considers the similarity between samples with different clusters to balance the confidence of pseudo labels. Dictionary learning (DL) is powerful for representation learning, while it fails to capture the deep hierarchical information hidden in data. In this paper, we propose a new generalized end-to-end mulita-layer representation learning architecture referred to as Multi-layer Dictionary Pair Learning Network (MDPL-net) for the deep sparse and hierarchical representation of images. To enable MDPL-net to conduct accurate classification, MDPL-net clearly integrates the skip connection end-to-end network and multi-layer deep sparse dictionary learning into a unified architecture. The representation learning module has several hidden DL blocks, where each hidden DL block has a dictionary pair learning (DPL) layer, a batch-norm layer and an activation function layer, and the DL blocks are connected in a feed-forward manner. To further improve the information flow and maintain the privileged features between different DL blocks, a novel skip dense connectivity pattern is deployed between hidden DL blocks, which can obtain more stable and discriminative features. The DPL layer jointly formulates the discriminative synthesis dictionary and analysis dictionary by minimizing reconstruction error within each batch over the feature maps from front layers. Extensive results on benchmark databases demonstrate the effectiveness of MDPL-net for discriminative representation and robust image classification.

Deep subspace clustering (DSC) with the auto-encoder and self-expression layer is of great concern due to encouraging performance. However, existing methods usually adopt a “single-task” strategy based on a single dataset, without considering other related tasks or data. As such, they cannot discover other useful information to improve the clustering task. Besides, the local structure preservation of the latent codes in mapping is usually ignored. In this paper, we therefore present an effective “multi-task” strategy via the self-supervised data augmentation, and propose a new end-to-end trainable Triplet Deep Subspace Clustering Network (TDSC-net). Specifically, TDSC-net firstly generates triplet data (i.e., anchor, positive and negative data) from input data by a spectral clustering module and a self-supervised data augmentation module. This can enable it to inherit the merits of self-supervised learning and multitask learning implicitly. After that, TDSC-net builds a triplet deep autoencoder network with a self-expression layer, which takes the triplet data as input, where they share the common network layers (i.e., autoencoder and self-expression layers) over the triple tasks for complementary learning and mutual supervision. A triplet loss is also included to retain the local information of deep latent codes, which will also benefit the self-expression. Furthermore, TDSC-net separates the self-expression layer from decoding process to improve the efficiency of reconstruction. Extensive results on several public datasets demonstrate the effectiveness of our triplet-task DSC strategy.

Compared with univariate time series clustering, multivariate time series (MTS) clustering has become a challenging research topic on the data mining of time series. In this paper, a novel model-based approach Adaptive State Continuity-Based Sparse Inverse Covariance Clustering (ASCSICC) is proposed for MTS clustering. Specifically, the state continuity is introduced to make the traditional Gaussian mixture model (GMM) applicable to time series clustering. To prevent overfitting, the alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) is applied to optimize the parameter of GMM inverse covariance. In addition, the proposed approach simultaneously segments and clusters the time series. Technically, first, the adaptive state continuity is estimated based on the distance similarity of adjacent time series data. Then, a dynamic programming algorithm of cluster assignment by adaptive state continuity is taken as the E-step, and the ADMM for solving sparse inverse covariance is taken as the M-step. E-step and M-step are combined into an Expectation-Maximization (EM) algorithm to conduct the clustering process. Finally, we show the effectiveness of the proposed approach by comparing the ASC-SICC with several state-of-the-art approaches in experiments on two datasets from real applications.
