We propose a generalized optimization framework for detecting anomalous patterns (subgraphs that are interesting or unexpected) in interdependent networks, such as multi-layer networks, temporal networks, networks of networks, and many others. We frame the problem as a non-convex optimization that has a general nonlinear score function and a set of block-structured and non-convex constraints. We develop an effective, efficient, and parallelizable projection-based algorithm, namely Graph Block-structured Gradient Projection (GBGP), to solve the problem. It is proved that our algorithm 1) runs in nearly-linear time on the network size, and 2) enjoys a theoretical approximation guarantee. Moreover, we demonstrate how our framework can be applied to two very practical applications, and we conduct comprehensive experiments to show the effectiveness and efficiency of our proposed algorithm.

Single Image Deraining task aims at recovering the rain-free background from an image degraded by rain streaks and rain accumulation. For the powerful fitting ability of deep neural networks and massive training data, data-driven deep SID methods obtained significant improvement over traditional ones. Current SID methods usually focus on improving the deraining performance by proposing different kinds of deraining networks, while neglecting the interpretation of the solving process. As a result, the generalization ability may still be limited in real-world scenarios, and the deraining results also cannot effectively improve the performance of subsequent high-level tasks (e.g., object detection). To explore these issues, we in this paper re-examine the three important factors (i.e., data, rain model and network architecture) for the SID problem, and specifically analyze them by proposing new and more reasonable criteria (i.e., general vs. specific, synthetical vs. mathematical, black-box vs. white-box). We also study the relationship of the three factors from a new perspective of data, and reveal two different solving paradigms (explicit vs. implicit) for the SID task. We further discuss the current mainstream data-driven SID methods from five aspects, i.e., training strategy, network pipeline, domain knowledge, data preprocessing, and objective function, and some useful conclusions are summarized by statistics. Besides, we profoundly studied one of the three factors, i.e., data, and measured the performance of current methods on different datasets through extensive experiments to reveal the effectiveness of SID data. Document-level relation extraction faces two overlooked challenges: long-tail problem and multi-label problem. Previous work focuses mainly on obtaining better contextual representations for entity pairs, hardly address the above challenges. In this paper, we analyze the co-occurrence correlation of relations, and introduce it into DocRE task for the first time. We argue that the correlations can not only transfer knowledge between data-rich relations and data-scarce ones to assist in the training of tailed relations, but also reflect semantic distance guiding the classifier to identify semantically close relations for multi-label entity pairs. Specifically, we use relation embedding as a medium, and propose two co-occurrence prediction sub-tasks from both coarse- and fine-grained perspectives to capture relation correlations. Finally, the learned correlation-aware embeddings are used to guide the extraction of relational facts. Substantial experiments on two popular DocRE datasets are conducted, and our method achieves superior results compared to baselines. Few-shot deep adversarial learning for video-based person re-identification

Video-based person re-identification (re-ID) refers to matching people across camera views from arbitrary unaligned video footages. Existing methods rely on supervision signals to optimise a projected space under which the distances between inter/intra-videos are maximised/minimised. However, this demands exhaustively labelling people across camera views, rendering them unable to be scaled in large networked cameras. Also, it is noticed that learning effective video representations with view invariance is not explicitly addressed for which features exhibit different distributions otherwise. Thus, matching videos for person re-ID demands flexible models to capture the dynamics in time-series observations and learn view-invariant representations with access to limited labeled training samples. In this paper, we propose a novel few-shot deep learning approach to video-based person re-ID, to learn comparable representations that are discriminative and view-invariant. The proposed method is developed on the variational recurrent neural networks (VRNNs) and trained adversarially to produce latent variables with temporal dependencies that are highly discriminative yet view-invariant in matching persons. Through extensive experiments conducted on three benchmark datasets, we empirically show the capability of our method in creating view-invariant temporal features and state-of-the-art performance achieved by our method. Question answering methods are well-known for leveraging data bias, such as the language prior in visual question answering and the position bias in machine reading comprehension (extractive question answering). Current debiasing methods often come at the cost of significant in-distribution performance to achieve favorable out-of-distribution generalization ability, while non-debiasing methods sacrifice a considerable amount of out-of-distribution performance in order to obtain high in-distribution performance. Therefore, it is challenging for them to deal with the complicated changing real-world situations. In this paper, we propose a simple yet effective novel loss function with adaptive loose optimization, which seeks to make the best of both worlds for question answering. Our main technical contribution is to reduce the loss adaptively according to the ratio between the previous and the current optimization state on mini-batch training data. This loose optimization can be used to prevent non-debiasing methods from overlearning data bias while enabling debiasing methods to maintain slight bias learning. Experiments on the visual question answering datasets, including VQA v2, VQA-CP v1, VQA-CP v2, GQA-OOD, and the extractive question answering dataset SQuAD demonstrate that our approach enables QA methods to obtain state-of-the-art in- and out-of-distribution performance in most cases. Association rule mining is one of the most important and basic technique in data mining, which has been studied extensively and has a wide range of applications. However, as traditional data mining algorithms usually only focus on analyzing data organized in single table, applying these algorithms in multi-relational data environment will result in many problems. This paper summarizes these problems, proposes a framework for the mining of multi-relational association rule, and gives a definition of the mining task. After classifying the existing work into two categories, it describes the main techniques used in several typical algorithms, and it also makes comparison and analysis among them. Finally, it points out some issues unsolved and some future further research work in this area.

Automatically generated questions often suffer from problems such as unclear expression or factual inaccuracies, requiring a reliable and comprehensive evaluation of their quality. Human evaluation is widely used in the field of question generation (QG) and serves as the gold standard for automatic metrics. However, there is a lack of unified human evaluation criteria, which hampers consistent and reliable evaluations of both QG models and automatic metrics. To address this, we propose QGEval, a multi-dimensional Evaluation benchmark for Question Generation, which evaluates both generated questions and existing automatic metrics across 7 dimensions: fluency, clarity, conciseness, relevance, consistency, answerability, and answer consistency. We demonstrate the appropriateness of these dimensions by examining their correlations and distinctions. Through consistent evaluations of QG models and automatic metrics with QGEval, we find that 1) most QG models perform unsatisfactorily in terms of answerability and answer consistency, and 2) existing metrics fail to align well with human judgments when evaluating generated questions across the 7 dimensions.
