Gene expression data from microarrays are being applied to predict preclinical and clinical endpoints, but the reliability of these predictions has not been established. In the MAQC-II project, 36 independent teams analyzed six microarray data sets to generate predictive models for classifying a sample with respect to one of 13 endpoints indicative of lung or liver toxicity in rodents, or of breast cancer, multiple myeloma or neuroblastoma in humans. In total, >30,000 models were built using many combinations of analytical methods. The teams generated predictive models without knowing the biological meaning of some of the endpoints and, to mimic clinical reality, tested the models on data that had not been used for training. We found that model performance depended largely on the endpoint and team proficiency and that different approaches generated models of similar performance. The conclusions and recommendations from MAQC-II should be useful for regulatory agencies, study committees and independent investigators that evaluate methods for global gene expression analysis.

Fabrication and Properties of degradable PPC/EVOH/starch/CaCO_3 Composites

Thermally stable and biodegradable composites from poly （propylene carbonate）（PPC）, poly （ethylene-co-vinyl alcohol）（EVOH）, starch and CaCO3 were fabricated by melt blending. differential scanning calorimetry （dSC）, differential thermal analysis/thermal gravimetric analysis （dTA/TGA）, tensile test and scanning electron microscope （SEM） were performed to investigate the miscibility, thermal behavior and tensile properties of the PPC/EVOH/Starch/CaCO3 composites. dSC results indicate that the introduction of EVOH could improve the compatibility between PPC and starch to some extent because of the interfacial interaction between PPC and EVOH, leading to an increase in tensile strength. The tensile strength began to decrease when more starch was added due to the aggregation of starch particles. SEM examination showed the good interracial bonding between the fillers and polymeric components. The incorporation of both EVOH and fillers can greatly increase the thermal stability of PPC matrix. The PPC/EVOH/Starch/CaCO3 composites can be melt processed and can be used as a common biodegradable material for a wide application.

Four cucurbitane glycosides, momordicosides Q, r, S, and T, and stereochemistry-established karaviloside XI, were isolated from the vegetable bitter melon (Momordica charantia). These compounds and their aglycones exhibited a number of biologic effects beneficial to diabetes and obesity. In both L6 myotubes and 3T3-L1 adipocytes, they stimulated GLUT4 translocation to the cell membrane-an essential step for inducible glucose entry into cells. This was associated with increased activity of AM P-activated protein kinase (AMPK), a key pathway mediating glucose uptake and fatty acid oxidation. Furthermore, momordicoside(s) enhanced fatty acid oxidation and glucose disposal during glucose tolerance tests in both insulin-sensitive and insulin-resistant mice. These findings indicate that cucurbitane triterpenoids, the characteristic constituents of M. charantia, may provide leads as a class of therapeutics for diabetes and obesity.

In this paper, a novel video transmission scheme is proposed to meet the low-delay and error-robust requirement of wireless mobile communications. In the proposed scheme, a combination of selective repeat (Sr) and stop-and-wait (SW) ArQ (Automatic repeat reQuest), is adopted at the link layer. In addition, an adaptive FEC (forward error correction) scheme that has a different redundancy rate depending on the number of retransmissions is adopted at the physical layer. The simulation results show that the proposed Sr-SW-ArQ/FEC scheme has better performance in terms of video quality and less transmission delay compared with a conventional SSM scheme that has a static redundancy FEC scheme and SW-ArQ protocol.

Significant improvement of flux pinning and irreversibility field of nano-Ho2O3 doped MgB2

Mg1-x(Ho2O3)(x)B-2 alloys are prepared by in situ solid state reaction to investigate the magnetic Ho2O3 dopant on the flux pinning behaviour in MgB2. Ho2O3 doping does not change the crystal structure, T-c, and H-c2 of MgB2, however, J(c) and H-irr have been significantly enhanced. J(c) of 1.2 x 10(5) A/cm(2) at 5 K in 5 T field is achieved for the best sample, significantly higher than the values achieved by the non-magnetic impurities, such as Ti-, Zr, Y2O3-doped MgB2. The observed magnetic HoB4 particles with a size between 5 and 10 nm were attributed to be the source for the enhanced flux pinning effects. (C) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Fibre Bragg gratings （FBGs） are inscribed in homemade microstructured fibres by the standard phase mask method. Enhanced couplings between the forward fundamental mode and backward cladding modes are obtained. The mode coupling and spectral characteristics are investigated experimentally. The cladding mode resonances can be affected by filling active materials into the air holes, which will be useful for the implementation of tunable photonic devices in optical fibre communication and sensing systems.

We review the evidence from a number of surveys in which our NetLab has been involved about the extent to which the Internet is transforming or enhancing community. The studies show that the Internet is used for connectivity locally as well as globally, although the nature of its use varies in different countries. Internet use is adding on to other forms of communication, rather than replacing them. Internet use is reinforcing the pre-existing turn to societies in the developed world that are organized around networked individualism rather than group or local solidarities. The result has important implications for civic involvement.

A degree Naval Architect he has over 38 years of experience in the design construction and maintenance of surface ships. His experience includes 28 yeus with the Naval Sea Systems Command Naval Ship Engineering Centerl Bureau of Ships specializing in the structural design of Naval surface ships and 7 years with ABS Specializing in the application of commercial ship design practices. Most recently he worked with both NASSCO and ABS MZ the Arsenal Ship Program. Steve was very active with the Ships Structure Committee in developing R&D programs for ship structure and he is a member of the ASNE Journal Committee. Steve received a BS in Mechanical Engineering (Naval Architecture Option) from Virginia Polytechnic Institute in 1964. He is a member of the ASNE TAU BETA PI PI TAU SIGMA and PHI KAPPA PHI. William 1. Lind joined ABS in 1992 after ten years with Sparkman and Stephens Inc. He is currently ABS Amekas Manager of Engineering jm New Orleans and Cleveland. Both ofices conduct plan reviews for militavy commercial and private marine craft fm self-propelled vessels under 300 feet in length and bargus unlimited in length. As Vice-Chaimn ojthe Western Rivers Technical Committee Great Lakes Technical Committee and the Small Vessel Committee Bill participated in the writing of the 1997 ABS Guide for Building and Classing High Speed Craft and the 1997 ABS Rules for Building and Classing Steel Vessels Under 9OM. The defense Advanced research Project Agency (dArPA), in conjunction with the U.S. Navy, initiated a research program for the design and construction of a distinctive warship for the 21st century known as the Arsenal Ship. By using an innovative development and acquisition approach it was hoped to streamline the procurement process and reduce costs. In an environment where budgets are being cut, both industry and Government were challenged to develop, design, and produce the innovative ship and related mission systems to meet specific performance capabilities within strict affordability constraints. A key element of this innovative acquisition approach was a new certification scheme designed to replace the traditional test and evaluation (T&E) and acceptance process. The purpose of this paper is to describe the development of the certification plan during Phase LI of the Arsenal Ship program by the American Bureau of Shipping and the contending Shipyard teams, and to discuss the potential benefits of this alternative certification approach. Although the Arsenal Ship program was canceled late in 1997, insight derived from the exploration of new certification concepts could benefit future design and building programs.

He received the B. Eng. degree in electrical engineering from Concordia University Montreal Canada in 1989. He is at present completing the M.A.Sc. degree in electrical engineering at Concordia University. (S'75–S'79–M'79–SM'86) received the Ph.D. degree from Southern Methodist University Dallas TX in 1979. He spent the next two years working as a Visiting Professor in Egypt after which he moved to Ottawa Canada in 1982. He assumed teaching and research positions in Carleton and Manitoba Univerities and later moved to Concordia University Montreal Canada in 1983 where he is now a Professor in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department. He has published numerous papers in IEEE and international journals in the areas of spread spectrum and networking. He is a well-known expert in these areas and serves as a consultant to many companies. His current research interests include wide-band metropolitan networks switching architectures and performance of on-board multibeam satellites acquisitionless CDMA networks code distribution and orthogonalization of CDMA signals responsive congestion control for ATM-based networks ARQ techniques and investigation of the novel SUGAR CDMA systems in fading channels. Dr. Elhakeem is a Senior Member of the Canadian Electrical Engineering Society and Armed Forces Association. He has chaired numerous technical sessions in IEEE Conferences was the Technical Program Chairman for IEEE Montech 1986 Montreal Canada. Dr. Elhakeem is the key guest editor of theIEEE Journal of Selected Areas in Communicationsfor the May June issues 1993 covering CDMA networks. In this paper, we study the performance of a prioritized on-board baseband switch in conjunction with a multibeam satellite handling integrated services. The services considered for the analysis include voice, video, file transfer and interactive data. The prioritized switch uses both input and output buffering, switch speed-up as well as a two-phase head-of-line resolution algorithm, in order to reduce the buffer loss while maintaining acceptable user delays. The minimum required buffer capacity and switch speed-up for each service in a prioritized environment are found under uniform traffic conditions. It is shown that under uniform traffic conditions, only minimal buffering and switch speed-up are needed even for the lowest priority users. The performance dependence on the switch size is also substantially reduced with head of line resolution and buffering even in a prioritized environment.
