Private and Robust Distributed Nonconvex Optimization via Polynomial Approximation

There has been work that exploits polynomial approximation to solve distributed nonconvex optimization problems involving univariate objectives. This idea facilitates arbitrarily precise global optimization without requiring local evaluations of gradients at every iteration. Nonetheless, there remains a gap between existing guarantees and practical requirements, e.g., privacy preservation and robustness to network imperfections. To fill this gap and keep the above strengths, we propose a Private and Robust Chebyshev-Proxy-based distributed Optimization Algorithm (PR-CPOA). Specifically, to ensure both the accuracy of solutions and the privacy of local objectives, we design a new privacy-preserving mechanism. This mechanism leverages the randomness in blockwise insertions of perturbed vector states and hence provides a stronger privacy guarantee in the scope of (α, β)-data-privacy. Furthermore, to gain robustness against network imperfections, we use the push-sum consensus protocol as a backbone and discuss its specific enhancements. Thanks to the purely consensus-type iterations, we avoid the privacy-accuracy trade-off and the bother of selecting proper step sizes in different settings. We rigorously analyze the accuracy, privacy, and complexity of the proposed algorithm. We show that the advantages brought by introducing polynomial approximation are maintained when all the above requirements exist. © 2021, CC BY-NC-SA.

The safe and stable operation of the generator set is related to the national economy and people's livelihood. As an important part of generator excitation system, carbon brush and slip ring temperature monitoring can effectively evaluate the state of the generator, which plays a vital role. Most of the current researches use infrared images to monitor carbon brush temperature, but there are often problems such as high noise and unclear focus. According to the requirements of infrared image display, this paper combines the method of bistable stochastic resonance to denoise the image, and on this basis, introduces the adaptive stochastic resonance array method to denoise the gray image. Experimental results show that compared with common image denoising methods and classic bistable stochastic resonance, the adaptive stochastic resonance array method has improved both visual effects and peak signal- to-noise ratio (PSNR), which further proves the good application of stochastic resonance in weak signal detection and extraction.

Locality-aware channel-wise dropout for occluded face recognition

Face recognition remains a challenging task in unconstrained scenarios, especially when faces are partially occluded. To improve the robustness against occlusion, augmenting the training images with artificial occlusions has been proved as a useful approach. However, these artificial occlusions are commonly generated by adding a black rectangle or several object templates including sunglasses, scarfs and phones, which cannot well simulate the realistic occlusions. In this paper, based on the argument that the occlusion essentially damages a group of neurons, we propose a novel and elegant occlusion-simulation method via dropping the activations of a group of neurons in some elaborately selected channel. Specifically, we first employ a spatial regularization to encourage each feature channel to respond to local and different face regions. In this way, the activations affected by an occlusion in a local region are more likely to be located in a single feature channel. Then, the locality-aware channel-wise dropout (LCD) is designed to simulate the occlusion by dropping out the entire feature channel. Furthermore, by randomly dropping out several feature channels, our method can well simulate the occlusion of larger area. The proposed LCD can encourage its succeeding layers to minimize the intra-class feature variance caused by occlusions, thus leading to improved robustness against occlusion. In addition, we design an auxiliary spatial attention module by learning a channel-wise attention vector to reweight the feature channels, which improves the contributions of non-occluded regions. Extensive experiments on various benchmarks show that the proposed method outperforms state-of-the-art methods with a remarkable improvement. Copyright © 2021, The Authors. All rights reserved.

We propose a generic view planning algorithm that adjusts postures of the sensor automatically for multi-view perceptions. Formal description of the perception task is brought forward, including objects’ prior information library, the perception status, and tasks’ completion status. The view planning system operates on the basis of the formal expression, therefore it is not restricted by specific tasks. We employ the features that distinguish all candidate classes, together with features that define the rough shape of each class, as representation of the perceived information about the objects. The existence of features in each candidate class, the description of features, and the location relationship between features are known before perception, and they are filled in the fixed-form prior information library. All status are updated when data is received at a new view. To pick out the view that maximizes the acquisition of effective information, candidate views are sorted by a weighted evaluation function based on the updated status. Experiments of view planning for 3D recognition and reconstruction tasks are conducted, and the result shows that our algorithm has a good performance on multiple tasks.

Extracting variable-depth logical document hierarchy from long documents: Method, evaluation, and application

In this paper, we study the problem of extracting variable-depth "logical document hierarchy" from long documents, namely organizing the recognized "physical document objects" into hierarchical structures. The discovery of logical document hierarchy is the vital step to support many downstream applications (e.g. passage-based retrieval and high-quality information extraction). However, long documents, containing hundreds or even thousands of pages and variable-depth hierarchy, challenge the existing methods. To address these challenges, we develop a framework, namely Hierarchy Extraction from Long Document (HELD), where we "sequentially" insert each physical object at the proper on of the current tree. Determining whether each possible position is proper or not can be formulated as a binary classification problem. To further improve its effectiveness and efficiency, we study the design variants in HELD, including traversal orders of the insertion positions, heading extraction explicitly or implicitly, tolerance to insertion errors in predecessor steps, and so on. As for evaluations, we find that previous studies ignore the error that the depth of a node is correct while its path to the root is wrong. Since such mistakes may worsen the downstream applications seriously, a new measure is developed for more careful evaluation. The empirical experiments based on thousands of long documents from Chinese, English financial market and English scientific publication show that the HELD model with the "root-to-leaf" traversal order and explicit heading extraction is the best choice to achieve the tradeoff between effectiveness and efficiency with the accuracy of 0.9726, 0.7291 and 0.9578 in Chinese financial, English financial and arXiv datasets, respectively. Finally, we show that logical document hierarchy can be employed to significantly improve the performance of the downstream passage retrieval task. Harmful gases such as ammonia and hydrogen sulfide in livestock and poultry houses can seriously damage the health of livestock and poultry as well as animal keepers, so it is great significant to detect these harmful gases rapidly and accurately for the improvement of the welfare of animals and the health of animal keepers. Laser absorption spectroscopy is a gas detection method with the advantages of high sensitivity and selectivity, and is widely used in industrial gas detection. However, it needs further exploring to verify whether laser absorption spectroscopy is useful in detecting low concentration harmful gases in livestock and poultry houses. This paper researches on the method for high-sensitivity detection of harmful gases in livestock and poultry houses based on laser absorption spectroscopy by detecting the absorption signals of ammonia with a self-designed system including a tunable laser wavelength scanning system, a photoelectric detecting system and a long light path gas absorption well, and verifies that laser absorption spectroscopy can be used for detecting harmful gases in livestock and poultry houses. © The Authors, published by EDP Sciences, 2020.

Focusing on the problems of insufficient high-quality training samples to conduct an ideal detector for high-resolution remote sensing (HRRS) image object, we applied a multi-stage based detector to apply a resampling progressively strategy, which guarantees the amount of the positive training set and minimizing overfitting. The method has a sequence of regression heads training on the samples chosen by different Intersection over Union (IoU) thresholds. The first head with a low IoU threshold trained by a large number of positive samples and can prepare more high-quality samples for the remaining branches. The subsequent heads with the increasing IoU thresholds would train on more abundant positive samples and to conduct an accurate detector and avoid the problem of overfitting. The proposed method reached the best mAP value and outperformed the comparison methods by about 10%. The experimental results show that our method can significantly improve detection performance and solve the problem of lacking high-quality samples.

The strong correlation between neurons or filters can significantly weaken the generalization ability of neural networks. Inspired by the well-known Tammes problem, we propose a novel diversity regularization method to address this issue, which makes the normalized weight vectors of neurons or filters distributed on a hypersphere as uniformly as possible, through maximizing the minimal pairwise angles (MMA). This method can easily exert its effect by plugging the MMA regularization term into the loss function with negligible computational overhead. The MMA regularization is simple, efficient, and effective. Therefore, it can be used as a basic regularization method in neural network training. Extensive experiments demonstrate that MMA regularization is able to enhance the generalization ability of various modern models and achieves considerable performance improvements on CIFAR100 and TinyImageNet datasets. In addition, experiments on face verification show that MMA regularization is also effective for feature learning.
