With the extensive deployment of traffic cameras across cities, utilizing these devices for vehicle detection has become essential for efficient traffic management. However, variations in vehicle sizes and distances between vehicles and cameras lead to inconsistent scaling of vehicles in the images, which presents a challenge for feature extraction. Furthermore, conventional object detection algorithms fail to fully utilize the rich feature information across multiple layers. To solve these issues, we develop a novel and advanced multi-scale traffic YOLO (MT-YOLO), based on the YOLOv8 model. Firstly, we propose the spatial multi-scale (SMS) attention mechanism to improve the extraction capability of spatial multi-scale vehicle features and aggregate these features for dynamic spatial modulation. Secondly, we develop the multi-scale dilation transposition CARAFE (MDT-CARAFE) upsampling method, which utilizes dilated convolutions to enhance the receptive field at different scales during the upsampling process. Lastly, we augment the network with a detection head and replace the original detection head with the adaptively spatial feature fusion(ASFF) detection head, which dynamically selects and fuses multi-layer feature maps, enabling the network to better capture multi-scale information. Our experiments demonstrate that the MT-YOLO model greatly improves results on the traffic camera detection dataset., achieving an mAP@0.5 of 80.9%, with a precision of 92% and recall of 93%. These results surpass the performance of leading detection algorithms. In addition, the model takes only 12.5 milliseconds to complete an inference, which makes it highly deployable and valuable for real-world applications. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2025.

Semi-supervised Speech Lie Detection Algorithm Based on Multiple Features and Adaptive Threshold

The limited number of labeled samples can significantly affect the accuracy of speech lie detection systems. However, semi-supervised algorithms have been shown to effectively improve detection performance under such constraints. To address this challenge, this paper proposes a semi-supervised speech lie detection algorithm that utilizes multiple features and adaptive thresholds. First, through comparative analysis, this paper identifies 312-dimensional acoustic features and 768-dimensional self-supervised features as the key elements of lie detection. Then, these acoustic features are processed using a bidirectional long short-term memory network (Bi-LSTM), which obtains comprehensive information by analyzing acoustic statistical features in both forward and backward directions. Subsequently, this paper develops a semi-supervised feature fusion module (BSFM) to extract deeper insights from basic features and achieves adaptive feature fusion through targeted training. In addition, based on a detailed analysis of the distribution characteristics of lie detection samples, this paper proposes an improved Freematch algorithm to better utilize unlabeled data. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm outperforms most existing methods on the self-built H-Wolf dataset and the Columbia/SRI/Colorado Corpus (CSC). © (2025), (International Association of Engineers). Federated graph learning has been widely used in distributed graph machine learning tasks. The data distribution of existing graph-based federated Spatio-temporal prediction methods is mainly segmented by graph topology. However, in the real-world Spatio-temporal traffic speed prediction task, a location will have data from different devices belonging to different companies. A node may have multi-party information in the real-world distributed traffic speed prediction scenario. The difference in multi-party information leads to the information not being fully utilized. Moreover, the direct transmission of node embedding in the federated learning process may also risk privacy leaks. Using homomorphic encryption and other encryption methods will bring a high computational overhead. Therefore we propose a new distributed privacy-preserving traffic speed prediction algorithm, which uses secure node attribute aggregation strategy(SNAAS) to apply to the multi-party collaborative traffic speed prediction scenario when the graph topology structure is public. At the same time, secret sharing technology is used in SNAAS to protect the attribute matrix and reduce the overhead of secret computing. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

Seeking a Sense of Meaning and Companionship in Life: Informal Learning on Douyin Among Chinese Older Adults

This study examines how Chinese older adults leverage Douyin, a short video platform, for informal learning purposes, analyzing their usage patterns, motivations, and encountered challenges. Although Douyin was not explicitly designed with educational features, it has emerged as a significant informal learning platform for this demographic. Through a qualitative investigation comprising participant observations and semi-structured interviews with 17 participants, we reveal the distinctive learning experience that Douyin facilitates. The platform’s unique combination of short-form videos, live streaming capabilities, and interactive community features creates an engaging learning environment that particularly resonates with older adults. Our findings demonstrate that participants derive substantial social-emotional benefits beyond knowledge acquisition, including strengthened social connections, enhanced companionship, and a reinforced sense of purpose through their Douyin engagement. These social-emotional aspects emerge as crucial factors driving older adults’ selection of Douyin as their preferred learning platform. By providing comprehensive insights into older adults’ engagement with digital platforms for lifelong learning, this research offers valuable implications for HCI, particularly in understanding how technology can be optimized to support the learning needs of older populations. © 2025 Association for Computing Machinery. Bayesian Synthetic Aperture processing for Direction Finding With a Deformed Towed Array

This paper considers direction finding with a passive towed sonar array that is deformed during platform maneuver. Since uncertainties in sensor location can severely degrade the direction finding performance, joint estimation of source directions-of-arrival (DOAs) and sensor positions is desired. This motivates us to present a synthetic aperture algorithm here that has improved performance compared to conventional schemes regarding phase coherent limitations on the incoming signals. With certain prior knowledge of source-array geometry, the maximum likelihood estimates of DOAs and sensor positions are found from maximizing the model evidence of these parameters and the observed data. The resulting computationally expensive optimization problem is simplified by utilizing the variational Bayesian Expectation-Maximization (EM) framework. By representing the array observation as a hierarchical binary mask formulation with several latent variables, whose estimates are iteratively updated by approximating the posteriors thereof analytically, we gain the benefit of selecting the model order automatically. This methodology, while retaining the advantage of synthesizing an aperture with improved angular resolution, is robust to perturbations in the array manifold. Additionally, several open-form Cramér-Rao bound (CRB) expressions are derived as indicators of limits on array and signal parameter estimates. Numerical simulations illustrate that the proposed technique is statistically efficient in both deterministic and stochastic source scenarios. © 1965-2011 IEEE.

EAFormer: Scene Text Segmentation with Edge-Aware Transformers

Scene text segmentation aims at cropping texts from scene images, which is usually used to help generative models edit or remove texts. The existing text segmentation methods tend to involve various text-related supervisions for better performance. However, most of them ignore the importance of text edges, which are significant for downstream applications. In this paper, we propose Edge-Aware Transformers, termed EAFormer, to segment texts more accurately, especially at the edge of texts. Specifically, we first design a text edge extractor to detect edges and filter out edges of non-text areas. Then, we propose an edge-guided encoder to make the model focus more on text edges. Finally, an MLP-based decoder is employed to predict text masks. We have conducted extensive experiments on commonly-used benchmarks to verify the effectiveness of EAFormer. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method can perform better than previous methods, especially on the segmentation of text edges. Considering that the annotations of several benchmarks (e.g., COCO_TS and MLT_S) are not accurate enough to fairly evaluate our methods, we have relabeled these datasets. Through experiments, we observe that our method can achieve a higher performance improvement when more accurate annotations are used for training. D2GL: Dual-level dual-scale graph learning for sketch-based 3D shape retrieval

Sketch-based 3D shape retrieval (SBSR) is an active research area in the computer vision community, but it is still very challenging. One main reason is that existing deep learning-based methods usually treat sketches as 2D images, neglecting the sparsity and diversity. In this paper, we propose a novel Dual-level Dual-scale Graph Learning (D2GL) method to effectively enhance structural information and produce robust representations for sparse and diverse hand-drawn sketches. Specifically, in addition to the traditional branches for SBSR, we introduce a Dual-level Dual-scale Graph Self-attention (DLDS-GSA) as an auxiliary branch. DLDS-GSA further consists of two levels of encoders, i.e., a local structural encoder and a dual-scale global structural encoder, to capture both local discriminative and multi-scale global structures while minimizing the impact of various sketch drawing details. Comprehensive experiments on SHREC’13 and SHREC’14 datasets demonstrate the superiority of D2GL for SBSR, with extended experiments on PART-SHREC’14 confirming its generalization for unseen classes in SBSR. © 2024 Elsevier Ltd

Improving Viewpoint-Independent Object-Centric Representations through Active Viewpoint Selection

Given the complexities inherent in visual scenes, such as object occlusion, a comprehensive understanding often requires observation from multiple viewpoints. Existing multi-viewpoint object-centric learning methods typically employ random or sequential viewpoint selection strategies. While applicable across various scenes, these strategies may not always be ideal, as certain scenes could benefit more from specific viewpoints. To address this limitation, we propose a novel active viewpoint selection strategy. This strategy predicts images from unknown viewpoints based on information from observation images for each scene. It then compares the object-centric representations extracted from both viewpoints and selects the unknown viewpoint with the largest disparity, indicating the greatest gain in information, as the next observation viewpoint. Through experiments on various datasets, we demonstrate the effectiveness of our active viewpoint selection strategy, significantly enhancing segmentation and reconstruction performance compared to random viewpoint selection. This article addresses an adaptive tracking control problem for uncertain high-order fully actuated (HOFA) systems with unknown parameters and disturbances. Under the framework of backstepping, the unknown parameter is estimated and the external disturbance is handled by using adaptive control and H8 technique, respectively. Moreover, the Levant differentiator is employed to reduce the computation burden. Additionally, the boundedness of signals in the closed-loop system is proven using the Lyapunov theory. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed scheme is validated through the simulation study. © 2024 IEEE.

AdvQDet: Detecting Query-Based Adversarial Attacks with Adversarial Contrastive Prompt Tuning

Deep neural networks (DNNs) are known to be vulnerable to adversarial attacks even under a black-box setting where the adversary can only query the model. Particularly, query-based blackbox adversarial attacks estimate adversarial gradients based on the returned probability vectors of the target model for a sequence of queries. During this process, the queries made to the target model are intermediate adversarial examples crafted at the previous attack step, which share high similarities in the pixel space. Motivated by this observation, stateful detection methods have been proposed to detect and reject query-based attacks. While demonstrating promising results, these methods either have been evaded by more advanced attacks or suffer from low efficiency in terms of the number of shots (queries) required to detect different attacks. Arguably, the key challenge here is to assign high similarity scores for any two intermediate adversarial examples perturbed from the same clean image. To address this challenge, we propose a novel Adversarial Contrastive Prompt Tuning (ACPT) method to robustly fine-tune the CLIP image encoder to extract similar embeddings for any two intermediate adversarial queries. With ACPT, we further introduce a detection framework AdvQDet that can detect 7 state-of-the-art query-based attacks with > 99% detection rate within 5 shots.
